Feel Like a Kid Again...It's SPRING....and the Lines at Uncle Louie G LIC are Forming for Cones of that Delicious Ice Cream and Cups of Italian Ices.

Long Island City Loves Uncle Louie G

OurLIC recently spent time at the Gantry State Park talking "ice cream" with about 150 young families, enjoying a Saturday event. We were on a mission to distribute some coupons for the Uncle Louie G LIC store owner, Mark Entler.

We expected coupons for ice cream to go fast; and, the idea of giving out coupons for ice cream to people and children in the community was very appealing.

But, the real fun part turned out to be the level of excitement that the Uncle Louie G store was OPEN for the season.  EVERYONE we spoke with raved about their favorite ice cream or ices and told us how much they looked forward to going to the store.

OurLIC VIDEO CONVERSATION: John Fennell, Senior Vice President Director of Retail Banking, New York Community Bancorp, Looks at Long Island City

Queens County Savings Bank opened in Flushing 153 years ago. It was the first savings bank chartered by New York State in the Borough of Queens.

John Fennell, New York Community Bancorp, reminds us that "THE CUSTOMER IS KING".  At his community bank's branches, his bank's customers are "not just a number...you are a person". Being a community bank gives Queens County Savings Bank a competitive edge.  "We can afford to give you that one-on-one service...and it is consistent wherever you go."

Community banks have always been an important part of the communities in which they provide banking services.  They have always been the financial backbone for the families and businesses that make communities strong and pertpetually sustainable.  Their hallmark is their "local" customer service which is always personal and respectful.  Relationships with customers in their communities are deeper and go beyond deposits and withdrawals.  Bankers at community banks understand their role in the health, prosperity, and socio-economic development of the communities in which they live and actively participate. Commercial banks have tried to emulate them.

With community banks, the personal touch is important...not just a slogan. The local and personal touch becomes embedded in the operating philosophy of the bank.  It takes years to master it.  Managing it means hiring, training, and developing the right type of people.  It takes the right people, with the right personal commitments and characteristics, to perpetuate a community conscience within a bank. They have to grow through the company so that they know the philosophy.

Assembly Member Aravella Simotas Protests Merger of Pharmacy Billing Giants

Proposed Express Scripts and Medco Health Solutions merger threatens small business, means increased cost of prescription to consumers and small business insurance plans, and defies anti-trust laws.

On Thursday, December 22, Assemblymember Aravella Simotas held a rally opposing the pending merger between two of the nation’s largest pharmacy benefit management companies (PBMs), Express Scripts and Medco Health Solutions. Simotas, joined by small business advocates, community leaders and Astoria residents, called on Congress and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to block the merger, saying that it would threaten jobs in New York and hurt the state’s small businesses and consumers.

"This merger will destroy competition and give these companies unchecked authority to manipulate the pharmaceutical market and maximize their profits," Simotas said. "While they prosper, small businesses will be unable to afford quality health care for their employees and consumers will be deprived of choice and face ever-rising prices./

PBMs serve as middlemen between corporations or insurance companies and patients, and already have an advantage in terms of setting the price for prescription medications and determining the reimbursement rates for retail pharmacies.  The planned merger, which could take effect as soon as early next year, would result in a consolidated PBM with even greater control over the health care of millions of Americans.

Historic Partnership to Build a New Applied Sciences Campus on Nearby Roosevelt Island

Mayor Bloomberg, Cornell President Skorton And Technion President Lavie Announce Historic Partnership to Build a New Applied Sciences Campus on Roosevelt Island

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Cornell University President David J. Skorton, and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology President Peretz Lavie today announced an historic partnership to build a two-million-square-foot applied science and engineering campus on Roosevelt Island in New York City.  The selection of the Cornell/Technion consortium –  which pairs two of the world's top institutions in the fields of science, engineering, technology and research – marks a major milestone in the City's groundbreaking Applied Sciences NYC initiative, which seeks to increase New York City's capacity for applied sciences and dramatically transform the City's economy. Cornell/Technion's proposal was among the many strong proposals that were submitted to the City from a number of world-class institutions around the globe as part of the City's groundbreaking competitive process. The Cornell/Technion consortium was ultimately selected due to the large scale and vision of their proposal, the long and impressive track-record of both institutions in generating applied science breakthroughs and spinning out new businesses, the financing capacity of the consortium, the focus of the consortium on the collaboration between academia and the private sector, and the overall capacity of the partnership to execute the project.  In addition to the Roosevelt Island site, the City will also provide $100 million in City capital to assist with site infrastructure, construction, and related costs. This is the first selection announcement for the Applied Sciences NYC initiative. Productive discussions are ongoing with other respondents – Carnegie Mellon, Columbia and a New York University-led consortium – and the possibility of additional science and engineering partnerships in the City is still open. Mayor Bloomberg made the announcement at Cornell's Weill Cornell Medical College, and was also joined by Deputy Mayor for Economic Development Robert K. Steel, New York City Economic Development President Seth W. Pinsky, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, State Senator José M. Serrano, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, Council Member Jessica Lappin, as well as other civic and business leaders.

"Thanks to this outstanding partnership and groundbreaking proposal from Cornell and the Technion, New York City's goal of becoming the global leader in technological innovation is now within sight," said Mayor Bloomberg. "By adding a new state-of-the-art institution to our landscape, we will educate tomorrow's entrepreneurs and create the jobs of the future. This partnership has so much promise because we share the same goal: to make New York City home to the world's most talented workforce..

"Cornell University and our extraordinary partner, The Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, are deeply gratified to have the opportunity to realize Mayor Bloomberg's vision for New York City: to prepare tomorrow's expanding talent pool of tech leaders and entrepreneurs to work with the city's key industries in growing tomorrow's innovation ecosystem," said Cornell President Skorton. "Starting today, we are going to put our plan to work, tapping into our extensive connections throughout the city and build a truly 21st Century campus to fuel the creation of new businesses and new industries throughout the city for decades to come./

Ed Koch Commentary: Judge Jed Rakoff ~ A Light Unto His Fellow Jurists

Former Mayor Ed Koch is a Contributor to OurLIC.

After the 1929 stock market crash, Wall Street was perceived as being inadequately regulated.   As a result of that perception, the administration of Franklin Delano Roosevelt created the Securities and Exchange Commission (S.E.C.).  Its purpose was to protect Wall Street investors from the firms that handled their money.

The S.E.C. was created as an independent agency to be free from political control, but that is never entirely the case when Congress controls an agency’s budget.  The fear of increasing political control of the agency was the subject of an op ed article by Arthur Levitt, Jr. in The New York Times on August 7, 2011.  Levitt, chairman of the S.E.C. from 1993 to 2001, pointed out there are bills pending that would micromanage the S.E.C. and that “we are witnessing a pattern of Congress grabbing the steering wheel of an independent agency.”

The S.E.C. has been given huge new powers of regulation under landmark legislation passed in July 2010 known as Dodd-Frank, the result of the debacle on Wall Street involving banks and other financial institutions which caused losses in the trillions of dollars to investors.  The era will always be joined at the hip with the phrase referring to many of those institutions as “too big to fail.”  I have done my best to add an additional phrase to the description, “too big to jail.”

Bucharest Restaurant DAZZLES!

Simply said, Bucharest Restaurant DAZZLES with Romanian authenticity.

Bucharest Restaurant is the real thing. It is contributing to our appreciation for multiculturalism these days.  Restaurants like Bucharest help us look at life in Queens in a new way, with a greater appreciation and desire to try new places.

We discovered Bucharest Restaurant a few months ago because we've been exploring Sunnyside. It is a large, popular restaurant at the intersection of 40th Street and Queens Blvd at the 40th Street stop on the 7 Subway Line.

It is the kind of place that you can go with a friend for dinner, or with 10 friends or your famiily, or 190 guests for a wedding or Christmas party when you want to have the kind of fun that most venues can't offer.

FOCUS REPORT: Sunnyside Gets a Brighter Future!

DOT Changes Regulations for Parking in Sunnyside. Pending Changes also in Long Island City in Queensboro Plaza area.

US Congressman Joe Crowley told a group gathered for an announcement that "Communities change."  It was a simple, but profound observation that echoed under the arches of the 7 Subway line where the press had gathered to hear the official announcement that the community was going to change the parking for both commuter spaces, as well as for regulations that previously restricted parking along the Queens Blvd corridor leading to Manhattan.

The objective was equally simple: Make access to the retail shops and restaurants in Sunnyside possible, and easier for residents and visitors.

Sunnyside merchants are getting a boost from an initiative to change the parking along Queens Blvd. The problem of parking in Sunnyside has apparently been identified for a long time, and organizations like the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce and Sunnyside BID have been lobbying for change so that residents and merchants could enjoy the full benefit of the shopping opportunity offered in the community.

The Burger Garage Now Offers Beer and Wine

The Burger Garage gets its Beer and Wine License

The Burger Garage restaurant, serving the most delicious high quality burgers, fries, hot dogs, iceberg wedge, chili potatoes now serves carefully select draft beers... and wine.

The restaurant has become a popular spot because it offers a custom blend of 100% Black Angus, USDA Certified beef with no hormones or antibiotics ground daily for us by old school, 3rd generation butcher Pat La Frieda.

With the service of selected Draft Beer and Wines, The Burger Garage is in the position to expand its dinner customer business. Not only is it a casual place with excellent food and good prices, the location is in a convenient transportation hub at Court Square where the 7 subway, the G, and the E intersect.  It is also a short distance to the Queensboro Plaza, and the bridge to Sunnyside's Queens Blvd.   For those in the Hunters Point area, the short walk or drive is worth it.

Don't mistake The Burger Garage for a fast food restaurant. It has a limited menu, and serves burgers that are competitively priced with fast food locations, but the comparison stops there.

Marriage Equality Act: Janice Velten and Patrice Pfirmann to Marry at Molly Blooms in Sunnyside after 24 Years

One Lucky Sunnyside Couple Wins a Free Wedding and Reception

The recent marriage equality vote in Albany inspired the management of Molly Blooms Victorian bar and restaurant in Sunnyside, Queens to make a generous offer: They decided to hold a raffle offering a free wedding reception to one lucky same-sex couple after gay nuptials become legal on July 24.

The offer led a flood of entries from far and wide and on Wednesday evening, July 13, 2011 a pool of over 40 couples gathered at the new bar and restaurant to witness one couple win.

Janice Velten the popular  mail carrier at Sunnyside Post Office for the past 40years, and her partner Patrice Pfirmann a civilian employee with the police department, had their names pulled from the hat as the bar erupted in cheers. These local Sunnyside residents have been partners for the past 24 years. “I've lived here in Sunnyside for 24 years and my partner Janice has lived here for 42 years,” Pfirmann said.

DOT Responds Quickly to Special Report on Court Square Municipal Garage Parking Signage

The DOT has installed signs throughout the Court Square area which point the way for drivers to locate the Municipal Parking Garage.  The garage serves the important and developing commercial Court Square area. It is important for the community residents, retailers, restaurants, commuters, and professionals, as well as the Long Island City neighborhood in general, but is hidden from view at the end of two dead end streets, both named Court Square.

'Build it ...and they will approve!'   Gypsy Rose owners present new, fully built strip club to the Long Island City community.

But Wait!! Community says "Not here" and disputes legitimacy of claims made by the applicants.

Long Island City residents, business leaders, and elected officials were shown photographs of a new strip / burlesk club preparing to open on 21st Street.  The location had previously been rejected for a liquor license by the New York State Liquor Authority on October 6, 2010.

Among the reasons for rejecting the location at the time was the fact that the stakeholders were threatening to open a "juice bar' where total nudity and 18 year old patrons are permitted by law.  The Commissioners determined that this was not characteristic of good citizens trying to work with a neighborhood.

Dispite the rejected application for a license to sell liquor for on-premise consumption at the location, and the commentary by the Chairman of the Commission, owners of the location have ignored the admonishment and completely built the interior of a club to be known as Gypsy Rose.

Z HOTEL to Open July 1, 2011 in Long Island City.  Pre-opening Press Party Attracts Hundreds 6/21/2011

Hotel Brings Stunning Views, Stellar Service and Sensational Gathering Spots To Emerging Neighborhood

As a community, Long Island City is very happy that Henry Zilberman has selected Long Island City to make the investment in a 100 room hotel here. The Z Hotel is contemporary and innovative in design and style for travelers, local visitors, residents, and local businesses that will make good use of it. It has the promise to make a significant contribution to both the quality of life in Long Island City as well as the economic future of the Long Island City community.

Henry Zilberman could have invested to build the Z Hotel anywhere. We think he chose Long Island City because it is in an early stage of a renaissance both as a residential community as well as a tourism destination.

Zilberman had the vision and foresight to see the opportunity. The community will support his hotel, and both will grow as the relationship between his hotel and community becomes further understood.

This article contains an interview by OurLIC with Lily Gavin, owner of Dazies Restaurant on Queens Blvd, and an active leader and advocate for Sunnyside and greater Long Island City. Lilly speaks out about the importance of everyone joining together to improve the community for the future.

Mort Zuckerman is "Cautiously Optimistic"

Mort Zuckerman, owner of NY DAILY NEWS and US NEWS & WORLD REPORT, addressed the Queens Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Meeting 5/24/2011

Mort Zuckerman told the business community, gathered at the Queens Chamber of Commerce Annual Breakfast & EXPO, that he has shifted from "cautiously pessimistic" to "cautiously optimistic".   He described the devastating blow of the financial crisis as a "tsunami" that hit the financial world.  He also reminded the group that the Stimulus Funds, injected into the economy by the Obama Administration, will be fully deployed by the end of June.  Since these funds helped to offset the impact of the financial crisis, the impact of the loss of the stimulus money is unpredictable.

Zuckerman was critical of the use of the stimulus funds because they were not applied to the type of programs and projects that would have created 1.5 - 1.7 jobs for every job added or saved.   Zuckerman was referring to the food chain effect, where several new jobs are created to support the work and efforts one job creates by adding new capital.

By detailing several forms of unemployment,  Zuckerman detailed that the financial crisis has lifted the percentage of employable people who are not working to 17%-18%, not the 9.0%+ that is reported.  He noted that New York City has been hurt less by the financial crisis than other parts of the country.
