VERY SPECIAL VIDEO: Chef Nick Guitart Builds Opendoor Restaurant...HIS WAY!

OurLIC presents video and photo documentary of the Chef who built his own restaurant with his bare hands...his way! Watch the whole story through OurLIC archives.

This is a story that began as dream...and a Community Board meeting in September 2009 and continued until a restaurant named Opendoor opened in March 2013.

Chef Nick Guitart did it his way!

OurLIC NEWS documented the design, development and construction of Opendoor Restaurant as it was happening, at each step. Photography and a special Video are presented with this article.

Opendoor Restaurant is located in the trendy Queens neighborhood of Long Island City, New York, which lies directly on the East River, and is known for its breathtaking views of several miles of the Manhattan skyline. When Nick Guitart discovered Long Island City, with its combination of gritty and new, of trendy and old neighborhoods, it was love at first sight.

He knew it was the place for his new restaurant opendoor.

As LIC folks know, LIC is famous for the iconic Pepsi-Cola sign that you can see from Manhattan. The sign was originally on top of a Pepsi bottling plant and luckily was preserved when they took down the plant in 1999. Just so there would be no mistaking where opendoor’s allegiances were,  chef-owner-operator Nick Guitart  designed and built a 25-foot long replica of the Pepsi sign--from the back! the LIC side! Nick’s Pepsi sign is mounted on the wall in the middle eating section of the restaurant. The understated red neon glow of the sign warms the restaurant and customers love it! Many people come in because they have heard about Nick’s great sign!

Melinda Katz, Queens Borough President, Announces Commemoration of 1939 and 1964 World’s Fairs.

Queens to Celebrate major anniversaries this year the 50th and 75th anniversary of World's Fair.

John Catsimatidis calls on Mayor de Blasio and Governor Cuomo to at least discuss a commitment to a NEW World's Fair in NYC for 2018 or 2020

In 1939 and again in 1964, Queens hosted the World’s Fair. Both were historic events for Queens, the city and the world. WWII had ended, and only a short few years later, the United States had entered a race for outer space and rocketry with Russia.  The United States was a clear worldwide leader. People wanted to know what we did and how we did it.

The World's Fair in 1964 attracted over 50 million people over a two year period to Queens.  The Unisphere became a symbol of the technological progress and leadership of the United State. By 1969, a mere five years later, that technology took the US to a moon landing in July.

Fast forward to 2014, Queens Borough President, and a committee representing institutions and city / state government announced that Queens would celebrate both World's Fairs by special events at the Cultural Institutions and parks throughout borough as a way to promote Tourism, and re-brand Queens as a destination becasue of its diveristy and attractions.

Queens Borough President, Melinda Katz, and a committee announced on March 28 that during the next six months, various Queens entities — including Louis Armstrong House Museum, New York Hall of Science, Noguchi Museum, NYC Parks, Queens Botanical Garden, Queens Center, Queens Historical Society, Queens Museum, Queens Theatre and The Port Authority of NY & NJ — will hold commemorative events, such as exhibits, plays, concerts and even a beer festival saying that "People will come to enjoy Queens parks, eat in the restaurants, and stay in the hotels."

Many people who came to the World's Fair decided to live in Queens, ultimately making it the most diverse place in the world.

Borough President Katz also announced a commitment to refurbish the New York State Pavillion. On April 22nd, the Pavillion will open for the first time in decades.

Visionary John Catsimatidis Makes Move to Develop Smaller Hospital in Brooklyn

John Catisimatidis, the extraordinary and successful entrepreneur, ran his campaign for Mayor of New York City on themes of "common sense" and that he is a "visionary".  Today, Catsimatidis announced that he has thrown his hat into the controversial Long Island College Hospital RFP process. Showing the kind of unpredictable agility that he is known for, Catsimatidis is breaking from his company's residential estate development strategy to propose a different way to serve the needs of the community.

It is this kind of innovation that New York City needs, and the Catsimatidis proposal should be of interest to all of the boroughs hoping to localize care for its citizens, and bring the resources and capabilities of companies like Red Apple Group to the table.

Progress Made by Mayor Bloomberg's Executives to Help Small Business Owners Avoid Fines and Fees

New information and tools, legislation, review of top violations to prevent fines and fees, plus new fee structure presented at meeting between City Agencies and Non-Government Organizations and Chambers of Commerce that work with small business.

As reported in OurLIC and discussed at the Long Island City / Astoria Chamber of Commerce meetings for the past 18 months, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has had an objective to make NYC more "business friendly" for small businesses, without diminishing the improvements in NYC quality of life that the Mayor has acheived throughout his administration. Similarly, the City Council has acted with the Mayor, and passed a series of legislative acts that support this objective for the City's restaurants and small businesses.

After a year of dedicated work on this, today a team of Bloomberg Senior Advisors, Assistant Commissioners, Senior Inspectors and others from the Bloomberg Administration presented the latest information, tools, structure, and strategy to ease regulations and fines in order to help achieve the objective of making NYC more business friendly for small business owners.

City Council Member Peter Vallone, Jr. Introduces Legislation to Restore the Queensboro Bridge

On November 26th, Council Member Peter F. Vallone Jr. introduced legislation to restore the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge back to its original name, the Queensboro Bridge. The legislation instead renames the Manhattan Municipal Building the Ed Koch Manhattan Municipal Building.

Vallone along with many of his fellow Queens’ residents and business owners have objected to the change since the City renamed the Queensboro Bridge in 2011. Vallone voted against the name change and has championed the issue ever since.

“While I realize this bill will not pass before the end of my term, I wanted to start the process so that Queens elected officials who come after me can restore the Queensboro Bridge to its rightful owners while simultaneously providing an appropriate honor for the late Mayor Koch,” said Council Member Vallone.

Ilaria Giuliani, a Graduate/doctoral Student in Spatial Planning and Urban Development at Department of Architecture and Urban Studies of the Politecnico di Milano and affiliated for six months at the Centre for Urban Research/ The Graduate Center, CUNY, has set her attention to the Greater Long Island City area for the research she is conducting for her doctoral dissertation provisionally titled “The formation of new urban identities behind and beyond the concentrations of creative and cultural activities.”

Giuliani is reviewing urban issues such as district regeneration, identity redefinition, territorial branding and urban competitiveness. The purpose of this doctoral research study is to investigate the role of promotional strategies, collective actions and clustering dynamics within different de-industrialized sub-urban zones, and understand how they have tried to shift from being mere sites of creative and artistic production to generating schemes of place making and commodification with different implications for visions and perceptions of urbanity.

She hopes to show how the gradual concentration of creative, cultural and artistic activities can be the main trigger behind, and in some ways even beyond, the creation, implementation and promotion of new identities in order to be attractive and appealing both for similar productive functions and related professional staff, and more consumptive uses and commercial amenities, tied to entertainment and leisure.

Kaufman Astoria Studios Cuts Ribbon on the FIRST Dedicated Backlot on the East Coast

"The Backlot is an exciting new development for the film and television industry in New York as well as for this area of Astoria. It will draw more world-class productions to New York and gives these productions much needed outdoor space to create temporary sets that can stay up for as long as they need to shoot," said Hal Rosenbluth, president of Kaufman Astoria.

On December 3rd, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, Kaufman Astoria Studios, cultural leaders and elected officials celebrated the grand opening of New York City’s first outdoor stage. Council Member Van Bramer, Chair of the New York City Council’s Cultural Affairs Committee, has played a pivotal role in working with Kaufman Astoria Studios  to create the block-long, 34,800-square-foot studio space which will allow productions to shoot exterior and special effects shots outside in a controlled environment.

"The addition of New York City’s first-ever outdoor sound stage puts Astoria on the map when it comes to producing blockbuster movies in the United States," said Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, Chair of the New York City Council’s Cultural Affairs Committee. "I am proud to have helped make this historic project a reality in the same neighborhood where I grew up. By expanding Kaufman Astoria Studios we are continuing the resurgence of the arts that has spurred a renaissance here in Astoria. From a dormant building in the late 1970’s, Kaufman Astoria Studios has built a world-class institution that has helped Western Queens become "Hollywood East".

"As the first dedicated Backlot in the five boroughs, film and television productions are now more likely to yell ‘action’ and choose Kaufman Astoria Studios and New York City as a location for filming," said Senator Charles Schumer. "Today’s ribbon-cutting is a tremendous milestone for the neighborhood, the city, and the thousands of people who work in New York’s booming film and television industries."

OurLIC VIDEO CONVERSATION: Gus Prentzas, Candidate for City Council, Calls for Debate with Costa Constantinides

Watch here for further announcement about a Town Hall Meeting debate between Astoria City Council Member Candidates for District 22.

Gus Prentzas, a member of Community Board 1, once the youngest member of the Board of Education, and a small business owner; wants to be City Council Member for Astoria District 22.  He has called for a debate with Costa Constantinides, Democratic Party District Leader and Staff to City Council Member James Gennaro.  Constantinides has the Demographic Party District endorsement.

In an August 24th OURLIC VIDEO CONVERSTATION presented with this article, Prentzas is straight forward about the issues that cut across "Stop and Frisk", crime, education, small business, quality of life in Astoria, tourism, PAC spending and their messages, City Council reforms, and other topics. He expresses fears of falling back to the late 1980 when crime was a serious problem in Astoria Park and elsewhere.

Peter Vallone Sr. was the first Speaker of the City Council.  He rewrote the Charter and restructured the City's government. In his book, Learning to Govern, he discusses Party endorsements and democratic clubs in Astoria. He often laments that there was a "wait your turn" aspect of them all the way up through his candidacies for Governor and Mayor. Vallone, a man of enormous capability, was told to wait his turn.  Prentzas understands. He only announced his candidacy after Tony Meloni removed himself as a candidate for personal reasons. But Costa would be the Democratic Party endorsed candidate because it was his turn. He was District Manager.

John Catsimatidis on the Kudlow Report 8/21/13

Catsimatidis discusses, "stop and frisk", pending union contract negotiations, and taxes with Larry Kudlow.

John Catsimatidis appeared on the Kudlow Report 8/21/13.

Larry Kudlow starts by saying "There is more to this election then disgraced candidates like Anthony Weiner or Elliot Spitzer. Just weeks before voters head to the polls, a federal court has banned the city's 'Stop and Frisk' anti-crime policy. Then, with Detroit's bankrupcy on front pages, this puts city finanances on the spotlight in NEw York, where the pension woes continue, benefits from health continue, and the city's 300,000 employees are working under expired contracts. It is in short, a mess. So here's someone who will tell us how he will get us out of this Republican mess is John Catsimatidis. He is the CEO of the Red Apple Group, the Gristede's supermarket chain and the United Refining Company. It's actually not a Republican mess as it is a bi-partisan mess."

Unique insights into John Catsimatidis, the man, drawn out by interviewer Mariana Terra, Editor of Romanian Journal and representing Romanian Voice TV

"A good American never forgets his ethnic origin."

On August 5th, John Catsimatidis, cadidate for Mayor of New York City, sat down for an interview with Mariana Terra, Editor of Romanian Journal and representing Romanian Voice TV.  The interview is especially important because of the ethnic diversity of New York City, and to gain insight into the underlying thinking of a candidate who, himself, has an ethnic background as an immigrant. The video is being released on August 14th, the same day as an article appears in the Romanian Journal.

"Romanian people and Greek people are very close. What can you tell them about your upbringing?"

"Is there something that differentiates you from the other candidates" asks Mariana Terra, Romanian Journal and Romanian Voice TV?"

PROFILE OF ASSEMBLYWOMAN CATHY NOLAN

Catherine Nolan represents the 37th Assembly District in Queens County, which includes the historic New York City neighborhoods of Sunnyside, Ridgewood, Long Island City, Queensbridge, Ravenswood, Astoria, Woodside, Maspeth, Dutch Kills and Blissville. She was first elected to the Assembly in 1984.

A resident of the district for most of her life, she is a graduate of St. Aloysius R.C. School and Grover Cleveland High School. Ms. Nolan graduated from New York University cum laude with a B.A. degree in Political Science.

Speaker Sheldon Silver appointed Ms. Nolan to Chair the Assembly’s Committee on Education in 2006. She has spearheaded efforts to achieve class size reduction, universal pre-k, middle school initiatives, improve high school graduation rates and other measures that will ultimately mean success for the more than three million school children in New York State. As a parent of a public school student, Assemblywoman Nolan will bring a parent’s perspective to ongoing education debates.

Prior to Chairing the Education Committee, Ms. Nolan Chaired the Assembly’s Committee on Banks from 2003. She has focused that Committee’s efforts on enhancing consumer protections and maintaining a competitive balance among financial institutions, successfully passing numerous new banking related laws. Among Ms. Nolan's initial achievements was the extension of the state's wildcard provisions that foster parity between federal and state-chartered banks. She also authored a new law to extend the retention period for ATM surveillance tapes in an effort to curb ATM fraud.

Ms. Nolan also Chaired the Committee on Labor. As Chairwoman she led the Committee’s review of workers' compensation, worker safety, protection and privacy laws. She successfully passed legislation in the Assembly to raise the minimum wage, to enhance whistleblower protections for healthcare workers, strengthen sweatshop enforcement, tighten enforcement of unpaid wage violations, protect innocent bystanders involved in strikes and to create a special fund to investigate prevailing wage violations. Ms. Nolan also continued to focus on occupational safety and health and worker education and retraining, securing funding for several programs, including the first ever occupational safety and health clinic in Queens. She has also held hearings on such important issues as raising the minimum wage, wage and hour violations, workers' compensation, the understaffing of nurses and age discrimination in the workplace.

For many years in the legislature Ms. Nolan was the Assembly’s representative to the MTA Capital Program Review Board, where she successfully signed the third MTA Capital Plan, driving millions of dollars to mass transit. She was successful in passing laws increasing the public's participation in MTA decisions, extending the arbitration provisions for MTA's labor unions and requiring fire safety training for employees.

In addition, she serves on the Ways and Means Committee, the Veterans' Affairs Committee and the Corporations, Authorities and Commissions Committee. She also serves on the Assembly Majority Steering Committee, and the Rules Committee. Assemblywoman Nolan previously chaired the Real Property Taxation Committee, where she was successful in passing important legislation to save taxpayer dollars by consolidating assessing units and a bill allowing the United Nations Development Corporation to expand its New York City-based operation for UNICEF. Prior to that, she chaired the NYS Assembly Commission on State-Federal Relations, where she focused on fighting for more federal aid for public transportation. Assemblywoman Nolan is also a proud past Chair of the Legislative Women’s Caucus. Assemblywoman Nolan is active in many civic associations in her district where she has been the recipient of numerous awards.

She lives with her husband, Gerard Marsicano, and son Nicholas on Grove Street in Ridgewood.

Standing Committee Assignments 2007: Education (Chair); Corporations, Authorities and Commissions; Rules; Veterans’ Affairs; Ways and Means.

Peter Vallone, Jr., Chair of Public Safety Committee of NYC Council, Explains the Dangers of New Law Enforcement Bills Passed by the City Council 7/3/2013

Vallone says "This Bill is very, very dangerous. Call your elected officials because there are many in Queens, in addition to everywhere else, that support this, and they are not doing the role of their constituents."

The New York City Council passed a bill known as the "Community Safety Act" which supporters of the NYPD say is unsafe and can lead to unintended consequences.

OurLIC met with NYC Council Member Peter Vallone, Jr. on July 3, 2013 for a VIDEO CONVERSATION about these Bills; and, to have him discuss and describe why these Bills are not good for the NYC.  The VIDEO is presented with this article.

Calling attention to his strengths as both a business owner as well as deep commitment to public safety, Vallone had been Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan prior to being elected to the City Council.  Vallone's father, Peter Vallone, Sr. was the first Speaker of the City Council and had important impact on reducing NYC's crime by making an important commitment to increase the number of police at NYPD and a program called Safe Streets, Safe City Program which began in 1991. In addition to increasing the size of the police force, there were changes how the police were deployed and enforcement techniques.

A Tale of One City

When HOPE becomes a path, a dream becomes a promise.

One man grew up in the neighborhood of Harlem in the 1950's and 60's... touched by the Civil Rights movement and the generation that started to break down the barriers.

The other man grew up in the neighborhood of Queensbridge Housing, a decade younger, with an inspiration given to him by his father to make things better.

Both men love NYC and the everyday people that walk our sidewalks, ride our subways, and want to succeed.

Both men, gifted and skillful, climbed to leadership in NYC from backgrounds of humility and modesty.

Both men want to make a difference for children and families in NYC that remain in a struggle to fight crime in their immediate neighborhoods, gain access to funds and financial counsel that is normal and common for others, find work to earn an income, and seek higher education.

Both men know the secrets that all mothers and fathers know. They lived it themselves as children and parents.

One man broke through in the Ministry and had the help of politicians, elected officials, friends, and generous donors who backed his vision. The other broke through in business and NYC community work especially with children and his church.

One man walked into the other man's office. When it came to discuss guns and new City Council legislation, one man said to the other, "I talk to the mothers. They tell me that it is sons killing other sons in their own neighborhood. It isn't sons going to 5th Avenue to shoot people.

Peter Vallone Jr., Candidate for Queens Borough President, Meets with Hunters Point Civic Association 6/11/2013

Vallone says he wants to change the way Queens Borough President does things.

Cutting across a wide range of topics, City Council Member Peter Vallone Jr., candidate for Queens Borough President said he wants to change the lens that the Borough Presidents Office's looks through to make it more business friendly and expand areas of opportunity for everyone by fighting to get a fairer share of NYC resources, and by bringing in non-political experts in all areas of priority and administration.  He also emphasized the continued commitment to safety on streets and in areas that need crime prevention.

Vallone, recognized for his independent thought, spoke out on a number of topics including the fact that he wants to see the City Council return the name of the Queensboro Bridge to simply that name, rather than the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge. Never pulling a punch, he spoke openly and candidly about his fight to prevent the renaming of the bridge, and that he had lost discetionary funding, as well as funding for the Judge Charles J. Vallone Scholarship Fund from Speaker Quinn, because of his strenuous objection to the renaming of the Queensboro Bridge.

Other candidates for Mayor and elected positions have questioned the descretionary budgets, use of them in punitive ways, and the need for accountability of the taxpayers money.

The meeting was co-hosted by Hunters Point Civic Association and the Hunters Point Community Development Corporation. Brent O'Leary and Terry Adams as Presidents lead the meeting and participated.
