CATS Family Sponsors Hudson River Park Clinton Cove Cypress Grove between 54 -57 Streets on Hudson River

Catsimatidis' donation helps HUDSON RIVER PARK jumpstart effort to identify sponsors for support the trees campaign in park

John Catsimatidis, the successful businessman and former candidate for Mayor of New York, joined with family and staff members of the Friends of Hudson River Park (FOHRP) for the dedication of the Cypress Grove at Clinton Cove located at the foot of West 55th Street in Hudson River Park. A six figure gift by the Catsimatidis Family Foundation will pay for the ongoing care and maintenance of a grove of Bald Cypress that line the western side of the lawn in Clinton Cove which sits in the northern limits of the nearly 550 acre park. Hudson River Park stretches from West 59th Street to just north of Battery Park City, attracting 17 million visits annually by residents and tourists.

John Catsimatidis said, "In less than 20 years, the banks of the Hudson River have been transformed from an underutilized eyesore, filled with rundown buildings and decaying piers, into a magnificent combination of open space and recreational facilities that have opened the Hudson River waterfront to millions of New Yorkers and visitors per year.

"Located on the site of a former municipal cement plant, Clinton Cove has been transformed into a peaceful oasis where New Yorkers can relax, sunbathe, fish or merely watch the river flow by. In addition, Clinton Cove sits one block from my corporate headquarters on 11th Avenue, so it is a natural magnet for many of my employees during their lunch break. My family and I are happy to do our part in supporting the great work of Friends of Hudson River Park and we urge all New Yorkers to join with us in supporting their effort."

World Poised for New Era of Unity and Peace through Religious Leaders.

BREAKING NEWS: Pope Francis; the All Holy Patriarch Bartholomew I; Machmud Abbas, President of the State of Palestine; and Shimon Peres, President of Israel ALL to meet at the Vatican for prayer for peace.

Pope Francis and Patriarch Bartholomew met May 24-26 in unity at a pilgrimage to Jerusalem to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the historic meeting in 1964 between Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras.

The celebration in The Holy Land sets the stage for unity and world peace. The two leaders of Christianity, representing 1.5 billion people worldwide, signed a common declaration for the first time.

New Yorkers on this historical Pilgrimage to Jerusalem included John and Margo Catsimatidis and Rabbi Arthur Schneier of the Park East Synagogue. Rabbi Schneier is Founder of Appeal of Conscience Foundation. John Catsimatidis is on its Board of Directors. The Catsimatidis brought a delegation of New Yorkers to meet with Pope Francis and All Holy Patriarch Bartholomew I.  Together, they met in unity in a visit to the Chief Rabbis of Israel in Jerusalem where each leader spoke about their vision, and participated in all of the ceremonies
.

At the meeting with the Chief Rabbis, Pope Francis called for mutual understanding. "We need to do more than simply establish reciprocal and respectful relations on a human level: we are also called, as Christians and Jews, to reflect deeply on the spiritual significance of the bond existing between us. It is a bond whose origins are from on high, one which transcends our own plans and projects, and one which remains intact despite all the difficulties which, sadly, have marked our relationship in the past."

John Catsimatidis has long been recognized for his religious faith and commitment. His philanthropy in support of the Greek Orthodox Church is legendary, having served on the Executive Committees of the Archdiocesan Council and Leadership 100. He is an Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate making him the highest lay person in the the Orthodox Church. As successful businessman and candidate for Mayor of NYC in 2013, Catsimatidis told CBS news from Jerusalem that he sees this as an opportunity for religious leaders to come together for peace. He told CBS "That's why I am here, in Jerusalem." He later said "There can be peace through religion, where politicians have failed."

Both Pope Francis and Patriarch Bartholomew spoke at a ceremony at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Bartholomew spoke first and said "Do not be afraid." He added "This sacred Tomb invites us to shed another fear that is perhaps the most prevalent in our modern age: namely, fear of the other, fear of the different, fear of the adherent of another faith, another religion, or another confession".

BROOKLYN BOOM: New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli says Job growth in Brooklyn is twice the rate of the rest New York City, and reflects strong economy.

State Comptroller DiNapoli presents an Economic Snapshot in Brooklyn

According to a report published by the New York State Comptroller's Offic today, over the past decade, Brooklyn has expanded at a rapid pace by attracting new businesses and residents.

Downtown Brooklyn is New York City’s largest business district outside of Manhattan, and there are a number of other important economic centers in the borough, including the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Sunset Park, Williamsburg and Greenpoint.

Since 2003, the number of businesses in Brooklyn has grown by 21 percent, a much faster rate of growth than in the rest of the City. Job growth has also been strong (19.8 percent), nearly twice as fast as in the rest of New York City.

Health care and retail account for almost half of the jobs in Brooklyn, but many of these jobs offer modest salaries. Professional and business services are growing rapidly, technology and creative firms are expanding, and manufacturing is reviving. These industries are helping to increase
opportunities for better-paying jobs.

A Topping out party is a way to celebrate the last piece of steel added to the top of a building.

Real Estate and residential development is TOP NEWS throughout New York City today, as developers adjust to new expectations by the public, and changes within NYC's government.

On March 29, 2013, OurLIC had a VIDEO CONVERSATION with John Catsimatidis, CEO Red Apple Group and Real Estate Investments.  At the time,, just over a year ago, Catsimatidis was candidate for Mayor of the City of New York.  He talked about his real estate developments, creating jobs, and his high level of interest to invest in New York City.

In the video he discussed development of apartments along Myrtle Avenue near MetroTech.  It was property he had purchased 30 years earlier, but the circumstances were not right for construction. He also discussed property he plans to develop on Coney Island.  At the time, his company had just put the shovel in the ground at the second Myrtle Avenue property.

VERY SPECIAL VIDEO: Chef Nick Guitart Builds Opendoor Restaurant...HIS WAY!

OurLIC presents video and photo documentary of the Chef who built his own restaurant with his bare hands...his way! Watch the whole story through OurLIC archives.

This is a story that began as dream...and a Community Board meeting in September 2009 and continued until a restaurant named Opendoor opened in March 2013.

Chef Nick Guitart did it his way!

OurLIC NEWS documented the design, development and construction of Opendoor Restaurant as it was happening, at each step. Photography and a special Video are presented with this article.

Opendoor Restaurant is located in the trendy Queens neighborhood of Long Island City, New York, which lies directly on the East River, and is known for its breathtaking views of several miles of the Manhattan skyline. When Nick Guitart discovered Long Island City, with its combination of gritty and new, of trendy and old neighborhoods, it was love at first sight.

He knew it was the place for his new restaurant opendoor.

As LIC folks know, LIC is famous for the iconic Pepsi-Cola sign that you can see from Manhattan. The sign was originally on top of a Pepsi bottling plant and luckily was preserved when they took down the plant in 1999. Just so there would be no mistaking where opendoor’s allegiances were,  chef-owner-operator Nick Guitart  designed and built a 25-foot long replica of the Pepsi sign--from the back! the LIC side! Nick’s Pepsi sign is mounted on the wall in the middle eating section of the restaurant. The understated red neon glow of the sign warms the restaurant and customers love it! Many people come in because they have heard about Nick’s great sign!

Melinda Katz, Queens Borough President, Announces Commemoration of 1939 and 1964 World’s Fairs.

Queens to Celebrate major anniversaries this year the 50th and 75th anniversary of World's Fair.

John Catsimatidis calls on Mayor de Blasio and Governor Cuomo to at least discuss a commitment to a NEW World's Fair in NYC for 2018 or 2020

In 1939 and again in 1964, Queens hosted the World’s Fair. Both were historic events for Queens, the city and the world. WWII had ended, and only a short few years later, the United States had entered a race for outer space and rocketry with Russia.  The United States was a clear worldwide leader. People wanted to know what we did and how we did it.

The World's Fair in 1964 attracted over 50 million people over a two year period to Queens.  The Unisphere became a symbol of the technological progress and leadership of the United State. By 1969, a mere five years later, that technology took the US to a moon landing in July.

Fast forward to 2014, Queens Borough President, and a committee representing institutions and city / state government announced that Queens would celebrate both World's Fairs by special events at the Cultural Institutions and parks throughout borough as a way to promote Tourism, and re-brand Queens as a destination becasue of its diveristy and attractions.

Queens Borough President, Melinda Katz, and a committee announced on March 28 that during the next six months, various Queens entities — including Louis Armstrong House Museum, New York Hall of Science, Noguchi Museum, NYC Parks, Queens Botanical Garden, Queens Center, Queens Historical Society, Queens Museum, Queens Theatre and The Port Authority of NY & NJ — will hold commemorative events, such as exhibits, plays, concerts and even a beer festival saying that "People will come to enjoy Queens parks, eat in the restaurants, and stay in the hotels."

Many people who came to the World's Fair decided to live in Queens, ultimately making it the most diverse place in the world.

Borough President Katz also announced a commitment to refurbish the New York State Pavillion. On April 22nd, the Pavillion will open for the first time in decades.

“While I realize this bill will not pass before the end of my term, I wanted to start the process so that Queens elected officials who come after me can restore the Queensboro Bridge to its rightful owners while simultaneously providing an appropriate honor for the late Mayor Koch,” said Council Member Vallone.

OurLIC Special Report: Ilaria Giuliani, PhD student in Spatial Planning and Urban Development, studies Long Island City for her Doctoral Research

Center for Urban Research / The Graduate Center, CUNY

Ilaria Giuliani, a Graduate/doctoral Student in Spatial Planning and Urban Development at Department of Architecture and Urban Studies of the Politecnico di Milano and affiliated for six months at the Centre for Urban Research/ The Graduate Center, CUNY, has set her attention to the Greater Long Island City area for the research she is conducting for her doctoral dissertation provisionally titled “The formation of new urban identities behind and beyond the concentrations of creative and cultural activities.”

Giuliani is reviewing urban issues such as district regeneration, identity redefinition, territorial branding and urban competitiveness. The purpose of this doctoral research study is to investigate the role of promotional strategies, collective actions and clustering dynamics within different de-industrialized sub-urban zones, and understand how they have tried to shift from being mere sites of creative and artistic production to generating schemes of place making and commodification with different implications for visions and perceptions of urbanity.

She hopes to show how the gradual concentration of creative, cultural and artistic activities can be the main trigger behind, and in some ways even beyond, the creation, implementation and promotion of new identities in order to be attractive and appealing both for similar productive functions and related professional staff, and more consumptive uses and commercial amenities, tied to entertainment and leisure.

John and Margo Catsimatidis Donate $105,000 to a new National Lighthouse Museum to be Located on Staten Island

Catsimatidis wanted to honor his father, who manned a lighthouse on Kandelioussa Island in Greece for 16 years. "Lighthouses and Lighthouse Keepers SAVE LIVES" says Catsimatidis.

John Catsimatidis, a former candidate for New York City mayor, and his wife Margo, presented the check during the Tappen Park holiday tree lighting in Stapleton, Staten Island. On hand to accept the check were Lighthouse museum officials, who said the donation will allow the museum to open on Aug. 7, 2014.

"It's been a long road. This new board has been in this fight for a few years and I think we are close to the finish line," said Capt. Joseph Ahlstrom, first vice president of the National Lighthouse Museum board.

Kaufman Astoria Studios Cuts Ribbon on the FIRST Dedicated Backlot on the East Coast

"The Backlot is an exciting new development for the film and television industry in New York as well as for this area of Astoria. It will draw more world-class productions to New York and gives these productions much needed outdoor space to create temporary sets that can stay up for as long as they need to shoot," said Hal Rosenbluth, president of Kaufman Astoria.

On December 3rd, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, Kaufman Astoria Studios, cultural leaders and elected officials celebrated the grand opening of New York City’s first outdoor stage. Council Member Van Bramer, Chair of the New York City Council’s Cultural Affairs Committee, has played a pivotal role in working with Kaufman Astoria Studios  to create the block-long, 34,800-square-foot studio space which will allow productions to shoot exterior and special effects shots outside in a controlled environment.

"The addition of New York City’s first-ever outdoor sound stage puts Astoria on the map when it comes to producing blockbuster movies in the United States," said Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, Chair of the New York City Council’s Cultural Affairs Committee. "I am proud to have helped make this historic project a reality in the same neighborhood where I grew up. By expanding Kaufman Astoria Studios we are continuing the resurgence of the arts that has spurred a renaissance here in Astoria. From a dormant building in the late 1970’s, Kaufman Astoria Studios has built a world-class institution that has helped Western Queens become "Hollywood East".

"As the first dedicated Backlot in the five boroughs, film and television productions are now more likely to yell ‘action’ and choose Kaufman Astoria Studios and New York City as a location for filming," said Senator Charles Schumer. "Today’s ribbon-cutting is a tremendous milestone for the neighborhood, the city, and the thousands of people who work in New York’s booming film and television industries."
