FOCUS REPORT: Sunnyside Gets a Brighter Future! |
DOT Changes Regulations for Parking in Sunnyside. Pending Changes also in Long Island City in Queensboro Plaza area.
US Congressman Joe Crowley told a group gathered for an announcement that "Communities change." It was a simple, but profound observation that echoed under the arches of the 7 Subway line where the press had gathered to hear the official announcement that the community was going to change the parking for both commuter spaces, as well as for regulations that previously restricted parking along the Queens Blvd corridor leading to Manhattan.
The objective was equally simple: Make access to the retail shops and restaurants in Sunnyside possible, and easier for residents and visitors.
Sunnyside merchants are getting a boost from an initiative to change the parking along Queens Blvd. The problem of parking in Sunnyside has apparently been identified for a long time, and organizations like the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce and Sunnyside BID have been lobbying for change so that residents and merchants could enjoy the full benefit of the shopping opportunity offered in the community.

The Burger Garage Now Offers Beer and Wine |
The Burger Garage gets its Beer and Wine License
The Burger Garage restaurant, serving the most delicious high quality burgers, fries, hot dogs, iceberg wedge, chili potatoes now serves carefully select draft beers... and wine.
The restaurant has become a popular spot because it offers a custom blend of 100% Black Angus, USDA Certified beef with no hormones or antibiotics ground daily for us by old school, 3rd generation butcher Pat La Frieda.
With the service of selected Draft Beer and Wines, The Burger Garage is in the position to expand its dinner customer business. Not only is it a casual place with excellent food and good prices, the location is in a convenient transportation hub at Court Square where the 7 subway, the G, and the E intersect. It is also a short distance to the Queensboro Plaza, and the bridge to Sunnyside's Queens Blvd. For those in the Hunters Point area, the short walk or drive is worth it.
Don't mistake The Burger Garage for a fast food restaurant. It has a limited menu, and serves burgers that are competitively priced with fast food locations, but the comparison stops there.

'Build it ...and they will approve!' Gypsy Rose owners present new, fully built strip club to the Long Island City community. |
But Wait!! Community says "Not here" and disputes legitimacy of claims made by the applicants.
Long Island City residents, business leaders, and elected officials were shown photographs of a new strip / burlesk club preparing to open on 21st Street. The location had previously been rejected for a liquor license by the New York State Liquor Authority on October 6, 2010.
Among the reasons for rejecting the location at the time was the fact that the stakeholders were threatening to open a "juice bar' where total nudity and 18 year old patrons are permitted by law. The Commissioners determined that this was not characteristic of good citizens trying to work with a neighborhood.
Dispite the rejected application for a license to sell liquor for on-premise consumption at the location, and the commentary by the Chairman of the Commission, owners of the location have ignored the admonishment and completely built the interior of a club to be known as Gypsy Rose.

Mort Zuckerman, owner of NY DAILY NEWS and US NEWS & WORLD REPORT, addressed the Queens Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Meeting 5/24/2011 Mort Zuckerman told the business community, gathered at the Queens Chamber of Commerce Annual Breakfast & EXPO, that he has shifted from "cautiously pessimistic" to "cautiously optimistic". He described the devastating blow of the financial crisis as a "tsunami" that hit the financial world. He also reminded the group that the Stimulus Funds, injected into the economy by the Obama Administration, will be fully deployed by the end of June. Since these funds helped to offset the impact of the financial crisis, the impact of the loss of the stimulus money is unpredictable. Zuckerman was critical of the use of the stimulus funds because they were not applied to the type of programs and projects that would have created 1.5 - 1.7 jobs for every job added or saved. Zuckerman was referring to the food chain effect, where several new jobs are created to support the work and efforts one job creates by adding new capital. By detailing several forms of unemployment, Zuckerman detailed that the financial crisis has lifted the percentage of employable people who are not working to 17%-18%, not the 9.0%+ that is reported. He noted that New York City has been hurt less by the financial crisis than other parts of the country.
