Long Island City, New York November 17, 2010 -

The Annual Luncheon and Expostion of the Long Island City Business Development Corporation was held on November 17th at the Terrace on the Park. 

Cathy Nolan, NYS Assembly Member was Honoree, and presented with  the  William D. Modell Community Service Award.

New York City Comptroller, John Liu, was the luncheon Keynote Speaker.

Gayle Baron, President of LICBDC, addressed the gathering.

Jeff Rosenbloom, Acumen Capital, introduced the winner of the annual business award, Brooklyn Market.

John Liu, Comptroller, City of New York

After January 1st, the relationship of the BIDS will be known as "The Partnership".
The partnership is all about working together and transforming Long Island City.
Long Island City has become an increasingly attractive location for all types of businesses and people in a short amount of time.

  • Proximity to midtown
  • Ample transportation and connections that incorporate the regions historical, manufacturing, distribution, industry,
  • You can do a lot in Long Island City.

New residential development continues to thrive.

  • 4,800 residential units in 35 new buildings

The entire city has its eyes on LIC.
Still face staggering unemployment rates.
We have to diversify New York City's job base.
Long Island City is fortunate to have various segments contributing.

  • Wholesale
  • Banking and Financial Services
  • Film and motion picture production
  • One way that Liu's office is helping job growth, by focusing on the City's purchasing power. The billions of dollars of contracts.
  • Creating jobs
  • Eliminating disparity by making sure minority and women owned

As of June, the 5 year return on economically targeted investment program was 7.65%
There is more work to do.
The Hunters Point South development will be 5,000 new, largest middle income homing development in a generation in New York City and will help the economy recover.

Born in Taiwan, Liu is an immigrant to New York City.  He went to NYC Public Schools.
Has been Comptroller for 10.5 months.
Need to spur growth in LIC and Queens.
LICBDC is an example of what can be done in NYC and Queens.

Q > What does the Comptroller's Office do to create jobs?

A >

  • Procurement contracts are looked at with an eye to give contracts to local entrepreneur
  • Helping to fund the Capital Plan - $28 Billion capital spending program for the next few years
  • The federal stimulus plan is nearing an end.


Q > Is there any way to create part of the Pension Fund to give access to Capital.

A >

  • Yes.
  • The ETI portion.
  • The overall pension fund is $106 Billion.
  • A portion is used to invest in NYC small businesses.
  • Access to capital is important.  Comptroller's office is working with banks. Need to free up credit ad make better access to capital.

  • William Modell had vision that started East Side Access, that LIC would be a transportation hub.

  • There are over 7,000 businesses in LIC
  • Streetscape work completed along Jackson Ave
  • By the end of 2012, the Queens Plaza area development will be completed
  • CUNY Law School soon to open
  • 40 new retail tenants
  • Acknowledged and thanked staff of LICBDC

Helen Marshall, Queens Borough President

  • Long Island City is now becoming top notch.
  • Long Island City needs a band of sparkling new retail stores.
  • Noted the Hunters Point South Middle Income homes
  • Recently took the Editor-and-Chief of the Daily News on a tour of Long Island City.
