Long Island City, New York May 19, 2011 -
Local business owners, banks, VIP's, community liasons, and others gathered to discuss the formation of the Long Island City Chamber of Commerce to serve Hunters Point, Dutch Kills, and Astoria.

Aravella Simotas, NYS Assembly Member District 36, addressed the group along with Joe Conley, Chair of Community Board #2, Jack Friedman, Executive Director of Queens Chamber of Commerce, John Vogt, Regional Director and Vice President of White Castle, Renos Kourtides, Planning and Development for Alma Bank, and others.
After an open discussion, Joe Conley offered a Motion to create a Long Island City Chamber of Commerce. The Motion was seconded by Miriam Porto, owner of Madera Cuban Grill & Steakhouse. Several attendees volunteered to serve on a formation committee to create bylaws and nominations for officers.
Long Island City small businesses are the winners.
There was an article in the NY DAILY NEWS Thursday morning May 19th (p. 36) including observations by Joshua Schipper, Pharmacist and owner of Vernon Blvd Pharmacy.
Special "Quick Reports" on events and activities were given by Queens Chamber of Commerce, LICBDC, Community Board #2, and Joe Kenton, Liason for City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer.
Also in attendance was Matthew Lerch, Liason representing NYS Senator Michael Gianaris.
Sixty people attended the meeting held at the Waterfront Crabhouse.
The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, and ended with a prayer led by Pastor Jake Zatske of Skyline City Church.
