Long Island City, NY January 26, 2011 - The Economic Development Committee of the New York City City Council heard testimony on tourism as part of its process of approving a contract with NYC & Co. to renew its contract with the city. George Fertitta, CEO of NYC & Co. presented a review of the current status of tourism in NYC, and built a case for continuing the contract. Concerns were expressed by several City Council Members, Queens Chamber of Commerce, and Queens Economic Development Corp that resources were not being allocated to promote highly attractive communities in Queens and Brooklyn for tourism. Jack Friedman, Executive Director of the Queens Chamber of Commerce, also addressed the need for a convention and conference center to be located in Queens. Arthur Rosenfileld testified regading the importance of the emerging tourism opportunity for Long Island City and the importance of having a plan to allocate resources to promote tourism for the community on a neighborhood-by-neighborhood basis. In a follow-up interview with City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, the Council Member said that he believes that the City is aware, acknowledging that the Mayor was at the opening of the hotel, and further went on to say "But, we want to make sure that the tourists from Sweden and Italy and South Dakota know what is available in Long Island City...and that gets to the resources question because NYC & Co. has to produce materials, has got to distribute materials, has got to produce commercials to make people aware that your visit to New York City does not stop on the island of Manhattan.
