Robert Yaro, President Regional Plan Association
|
Regional Plan Association is celebrating its 90th Anniversary. In 1929, they created a regional plan for New York which formed the basis of our roadways, bridges, parks, airports and other infrastructure for the state. A second regional plan was created in the 1960's. A third regional plan was developed in the 1990's for about 60 million square feet of space on the West Side. This included the recommendation to extend the 7 Subway line to the West Side. Mr. Yaro serves on Mayor Bloomberg's Sustainability Advisory Board, which helped prepare PlaNYC 2030, New York City's new long-range sustainability plan.
Yaro is a recognized authority on community planning and strategic development. The Regional Plan Association works with organizations and governments across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. He will present his view of the future of Long Island City, and how the business community should look at itself...and prepare for the coming decade of developments.

TOPIC: “Preparing for the Next Decade of Growth in Long Island City / Astoria”
The topic will include the impact of the proposed convention center developments in Queens at Willets Point and at Aqueduct. Yaro will include his view of the future of Long Island City, and how the business community should look at itself….and prepare for the coming decade of developments. This would include possible zoning changes and shaping of new transportation. This includes the coming changes that will come as a result of the impact of Cornell University-Technion Applied Science Campus at Roosevelt Island. I don’t think anyone has fully put this in perspective for Long Island City / Astoria.
During my recent conversation with Robert Yaro, he pointed out that the business community / MIT relationship in East Cambridge and Boston was a good model; and, that Long Island City has the opportunity to follow that model. His views of this would obviously be important at that time.
We also discussed the importance of “advocacy” to make sure that these projects are fulfilled in Queens, realizing that there will be those that lobby against these things for whatever reasons.
Remember to add the third Thursday of each month to your calendar for the LIC Chamber meeting.
ADDITIONAL TOPICS
- At the beginning of the meeting, there will be a segment for News and Quick Reports. Quick Report are 3 minute briefings of activities from each of the Community Boards, The Partnership, City Council Members and others who have topical items of interest to present to the open Chamber.
- Review of the Mission Statement and By-Laws of the LIC Chamber, and GUIDELINE for the Mission Statement.
- Introduction and ratification of the proposed first Board of Directors.
The first Board of Directors for the Long Island City / Astoria Chamber of Commerce was announced by Arthur Rosenfield, Founder, on Monday, February 27th along with two scheduled meetings. "The community is gaining a terrific resource of talented and energetic people who will guide the LIC Chamber of Commerce."
