Long Island City, Queens, New York December 24, 2012 -
This is another one of the hidden treasures to be found in LIC.... if you know where to look.
Apsara-Arts of Asia was founded when two art collectors traveling in Indonesia became enthralled with the quality and originality of indigenous textiles and artifacts.
Marvin Berk and his partner Dennis Kord, long time residents of Long Island City, soon returned to build the Apasra collection: each item is hand selected for its beauty and expressive strength. Most date from the 18th to the mid 20th century.
Their collecting started in Indonesia, but the art itself has led them back to its roots, i.e. India and the balance of Southeast Asia.
The assortment includes textiles, beadwork, architectural and temple ornaments, as well as ceremonial, ethnographic and decorative pieces.
A full collectionof 2,000 items may be seen at their beautiful website for Apsara-Arts of Asia
Apsara-Arts of Asia offers textiles and artifacts from tribal and minority peoples from Southeast Asia.
A mailing list is available to join for updates from Bali, Borneo, Sumatra, Lampung, Sulawesi, Sumba Timor and other Indonesian areas.
Additional textiles are from the Geija, Li, Maonan, Miao, Yao, and Zhuang peoples. Plus fine pieces from India, Iran, Laos, Thailand, Burma and more.
if you wish to receive e-mail notice of upcoming shows and pre-show viewing opportunities:.
