OurLIC NEWS Interview with Donna Levinstone at Jeffrey Leder Gallery 12/5/2010
|
Long Island City, New York December 5, 2010 -
Following a well-received Inaugural Opening, Jeffrey Leder featured Donna Levinstone’s dramatic and highly-evocative pastel drawings for the Gallery’s first solo exhibit starting on December 5th.
Over 30 pieces are shown in the main room of the impressive Long Island City space, including both her black and white and color work.
Donna Levinstone’s works of art concern themselves more with a spirit of place than an actual place ~ they are not descriptive of a specific location or place as much as they strive to create an essence of light and atmosphere. Her current work is centered around the relationships between tranquility and volatility, the ethereal and the earthly, light and dark, and night and day. Through the reflected light in her atmospheric drawings, Levinstone invites the viewer to explore the duality of what is permanent in our world and what is ever changing in it.
Levinstone says “As I layer my pastel drawings with darkness and light, I explore beauty, transition and the powerful forces of nature.”
OurLIC Interviewed Levinstone at her Exhibit. The conversation interview is presented with this article.
An active member of the LIC community, Levinstone has made giving back a large part of her life. She donates both her time and her artwork to many charities and causes throughout the city, including conducting art therapy workshops for cancer patients.
Her collectors include the Library of Congress, the Museum of the City of New York, CBS, General Electric, the US Department of State, AT&T, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Citigroup, Time Inc, the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art, Nabisco Brands Inc, Columbia House, The Disney Company, The Bristol Meyers Company, Pfizer, The New-York Historical Society and Touche Ross.
Jeffrey Leder Gallery is also showing selected small works from a number of artists from December 5 - January 9 in the smaller space as well, with a portion of earnings to support the good work of City Harvest.
Jeffrey Leder Gallery is located minutes from Manhattan, in the heart of the world-class creative community of Long Island City. Leder has converted a former factory space into a 3,000 square-foot modernist, upscale space. The gallery presents a wide range of important contemporary art by established and emerging American and international artists.
