Long Island City, NY May 21, 2012 -
David Skorton, President of Cornell University and Professor Craig Gotsman, Technion Israel Institute of Technology, discuss opening of Cornell NYC Tech Campus at Google HQ in New York City in Fall 2012.
HIGHLIGHTS
Google, Facebook, and EBay have significant presence in NYC.
New companies and emerging companies are starting tech companies here.
Missing ingredient for NYC growth in technology is a larger pipeline of top talent.
Cornell NYC Tech is a new academic model.
The key to the model is to co-located early stage investors with emerging companies and world class academics.
Co-location is critical... connecting academic research with industry in a "mixing bowl".
Starting this fall, the F Subway (passing through Long Island City) will connect New York City's tech communities at Google with tech centers at DUMBO, the Flatiron, Chelsea, Downtown Brooklyn, and soon Roosevelt Island.
The Cornell NYC Tech Campus at Google will attract local community and offer workshops, "hackathons", and mentoring opportunities. It will promote the idea of creating a true collaboration between acadamia and business that produces entrepreneurs willing an qualified to hit the ground running.
Professor Craig Gotsman represents the academic partner for Cornell at Technion in the video presentation made possible by NYCTV.gov. He is a professor of computer sciences at Technion Israel Institute of
Technology. He is also Founding Director of the Technion-Cornell Innovation Institute.
Google HQ in New York City is at 76th Ninth Ave between 15th and 16th Streets.
