Long Island City, NY February 28, 2012 -
With 46,000 clubs and 1.35 million members worldwide, the Lions Club is the world's largest service club organization.
The Lions Club of Long Island City and Astoria held a special meeting February 28th that marks a new commitment to build the Lions Club as a strong community service organization for Long Island City and Astoria. Ten new enthusiastic members were introduced to the club. Several previously knew the Lions Club because of parents and grandparents who belonged here in America, or in other countries such as Turkey and Colombia.
The Long Island City / Astoria Lions Club is the oldest club in this Lions Club District. It has moved from Astoria to Long Island City.
The Lions Club helps people in need. The need could be anything from taking care of the elderly, providing hospital care, taking care of the blind, and helping people that need food or clothing. The LIons Club of LIC and Astoria has been working with The New York Blood Center on several local Blood Drives that have raised nearly 200 units of blood.
The club is inviting serious community conscious people, who want to volunteer to help people in need, to join the organization. By strengthening the club in Long Island City, it increases the ability to help those in need and to accomplish the clubs goals for improved access to health care and doctors in Long Island City.
Volunteers can be any age...either men or women.
Marcel Veronneau, CEO of Industrial Management & Training Institute headquartered in Long Island City, and a long time member of the Lions Club, has formed a chapter in LIC and is meeting on the second Tuesday of each month.
Veronneau, and Club member Arthur Rosenfield and other club members, have been lifting awareness of the Lions Club and identifying community conscious people who want to join. The Club also has a special relationship with VISIONS, an organization that supports the visually impaired.
The Gift of Sight
Lions Clubs International Foundation's SightFirst Program to save sight and prevent vision loss enters the next phase following successful fundraising from Campaign SightFirst II. The program will expand to address new threats to vision loss as highlighted in this video and profiles four individuals around the world who have benefitted through the program.
1925 Challenge from Helen Keller
Helen Keller addressed the Lions Clubs International Convention in Cedar Point, Ohio, USA, and challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness." Since then, we have worked tirelessly to aid the blind and visually impaired.

Health Care and Medical Care Access Initiative for Long Island City
The Lions Club of Long Island City and Astoria has a four phase initiative relating to health care and medical care for Long Island City: The club has resolved:

- Raise funds to support a Community Van Service operated by The Floating Hospital that will make access to medical care more accessible in LIC, Astoria, and to the NYCHA residents.
- Raise funds and other activities to support the establishment and development of a Center for Ophthalmology at The Floating Hospital
- Help to define the current and future medical care facilities and available doctors needed in Long Island City, and to support the funding of improvements in the community so that access to health care and emergency care meet the needs of the community.
