Long Island City, NY April 21, 2012 -
NYS State Senator Michael Gianaris will discuss his vision for the future of Long Island City and take questions on topics such as the Hunters Point South Development and the MTA at the firs meeting of the Hunters Point Civic Association April 23rd.
Brent O'Leary, forming the Hunters Point Civic Association, says "This will be an important meeting to show the Senator how quickly the neighborhood is growing and changing and let him know the most critical issues for the future of the residents of Long Island City."
The event is sponsored by the Hunters Point Civic Association which is a newly formed Civic Association made to keep residents of Long Island City appraised of important neighborhood concerns and advocate for quality of life issues.
During the formation of the Long Island City Chamber of Commerce, Arthur Rosenfield contacted civic associations in Dutch Kills and Astoria. Their primary role is to give a voice to local residents by meeting regularly, and sharing information. The interest of the public is expressed on all issues relating to progress for the community, education, cultural development, and all aspects of government services. We think that Long Island City should have an active and well organized Civic Association for the residents. Others have expressed the same view. We are delighted that Brent O'Leary has taken the initiative to get this started.
For many of the same reasons, a process has been underway to form The Long Island City / Astoria Chamber of Commerce which now has a group of 33 promiment members of the business, retail, restaurant, and financial community as its Directors. The organization is meeting every third Thursday at the Waterfront Crabhouse.[ see Formation Announcement].
Altogether, these three organizations reflect that the residents and business community are defining :ong Island City at a historic time in its unprecidented development.
Further, the Long Island City / Astoria Lions Club has had a recent surge in members who have a commitment to community service.
