Long Island City, NY May 22, 2012 -
Jennifer Manley, Director, Government & Community Affairs at Queens Library; and Don Dodelson, President of the Friends of Queens Library at Hunters Point on the East River, met with residents to begin a new phase of reaching out to the public to attract "friends" membership and support.
The Queens Library at Hunters Point on the East River is fully funded for construction, an architect has been appointed, and the land known as parcel 8 has received its certification after an innovative brownfield cleanup.
This long awaited iconic Library on the East River is fully funded with a $28 million capital budget.
"Friends of the Library" are local organizations of residents who actively work with staff at their local libraries to for the purpose of creating public support for the Library, work with library staff on advocacy issues, encourage voluteer assistance, and to assist with fund raising that provides for the purchase of items not included in the Lobrary budget.
The Friends of the Hunters Point Library on the East River was chartered in July 2009. It has consisted of a relatively small group of people who have worked with the Queens Library and the Queens Library Foundation during the past years while the Parcel 8 site was under cleanup, and the design for the Library itself was being considered.
An iconic Library in an emerging community where families are being formed, and a new group of schools are being built, needs full participation and support of the community it will serve.
Conscious of the need for a strong and vibrant Friends of the Hunters Point Library on the East Rive, the Queens Library has begun an initiative to reach out to the local residents with meetings that are open and give the community a chance to learn what is going on.
The first meeting as part of this "open" initiative was held on May 22, 2012 at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.
OurLIC NEWS was at the meeting and presents a full video, including some challenging questions from community members who wanted to give feedback to the Library executives at the meeting.
The next meeting of The Friends of the Hunters Point Library on the East River will be held June 19th a St. Mary's Church at 6:30 pm.
