Long Island City, NY June 7, 2012 -
New York City will have 10,000 bikes available for use from 600 stations city wide as part of a privately funded program under contract with the city known as Bike Share and CitiBike. The bikes display advertising sponsors. It is the first large scale system of bikes for public use without government subsidy.
Riders of the Bikes will pay for use using a credit card at locations for pickup and drop off.
The company contracted to manage this is Alta Bike Share.
The bikes are heavy duty, durable, and have special features for this application in public use.
The city expects that the use of the bikes will be for short trips such as to-and-from transit locations or grocery stores.
Pricing for use will require a "membership fee":
- Annual Membership $95.00
- 7-Day Membership $25.00
- 24-hour Membership $9.95
Pricing is designed to keep the trips short from point to point.
Someone with a membership will be able to make as many trips as they want. Someone who uses a bike for more than 45 minutes (annual members) or 30 minutes ( other) will be charged for use of extra time.
The presentation by the DOT included description of the kiosk station and a presentation of maps. Sites for the kiosks were ultimately located based on input meetings by the communities. The kiosk are self sustaining with solar power, and can be moved because they do not require a concrete foundation.
While Community Board #2 members were advised of the plan for Bike Share, the Board was told that the plan was not subject to approval by the Board. Several Board members asked questions and expressed concerns relating to use of parking spaces for the kiosks, insurance to protect pedestrians, rules-of-the-road for bike users, and the large number of bikes (31) to be placed at Vernon Mall. The question by one Board member was whether there would be enough room for people to walk around and sit in benches if 31 bikes were parked there.
The Bike Share maps show a plan that will make bikes available in the Hunters Point and Court Square areas of Long Island City but not in Dutch Kills and Astoria, nor near Queensbridge and Ravenswood.
OurLIC attended the presesentation and presents full video and photo coverage including maps of locations with this article. Maps presented with this article are show as of June 8, 2012, and are noted by NYC as subject to change.
