Long Island City, NY July 13, 2012 -
People gathered at St. Mary's of Winfield Church in Woodside on April 5, 2012 to celebrate the life of Rory Staunton, a 12 year-old boy aspiring to be a pilot. The community came to share the tragic loss of Rory, who had died suddenly from an infection.
The NYT June 12, 2012 reports that an "unnoticed" Sepsis infection took hold of Rory. There was a Strep Throat outbreak in his school. During a school basketball practice, Rory cut himself and the infection took hold, unnoticed, in his bloodstream.
The problem is with the word "unnoticed"; and here is where the Staunton family has been looking for answers...as well as positive and constructive action.
At a June 7, 2012 Queens Community Board #2 meeting, New York State Senator Michael Gianaris told the gathered Board members that he had spent the day with Ciaran and Orlaith Staunton in Albany as they sought to inform the legislators and policy makers about the circumstances of their son's death, and to seek action to prevent this type of thing from happening ever again. Senator Michael Gianaris told OurLIC, "The premature end to Rory Staunton’s time with us is a tragedy for his family, friends, and our community, where he was rapidly becoming an enthusiastic leader. Let his memory inspire us to give our lives the same eagerness, vigor and joy that he exhibited. My most heartfelt condolences go out to the Staunton family during this difficult time."
Anyone who knows Ciaran Staunton knows that he is not shy, and also knows that it is Ciaran and Orlaith that will be the ultimate "unstoppable" father and mother who will help the NY State Department of Health and the Department of Education to shape new policy and laws. With community support, and NYS legislators like Gianaris and Assembly Member Cathy Nolan along with US Congressional Representatives Joseph Crawley and Carolyn Maloney behind the Staunton family, there is no doubt that national legislation to prevent this situation will follow.
ALL parents must know the fatal dangers of Sepsis and how fast it takes hold. ALL schools must warn parents of incidence of strep throat in students. ALL hospitals must do a better job with early identification. ALL doctors must act quickly to diagnose symptoms in emergency situations, like those experienced by Rory Staunton.
(UPDATE) NBC's GOOD MORNING AMERICA TODAY SHOW has now brought the Stauntons and their tragic story to a wide audience across the United States. On July 18, 2012, the TODAY Show told the story of Rory Staunton and interviewed these courageous parents, Ciaran and Orlaith.
What is the message? Orlaith Staunton wants other parents to know that "Rory was a wonderful child. He was kind. He was a real child of the world. He was very interested in international affairs. He had flown an airplane. He was just ready to take off in a life that he was so enthusiastic about". She adds "I want parents to know that they need to be aware of Sepsis". She say she wants parents to know that she has lost confidence in emergency room care because they discharged her son before blood tests were returned that indicated that there was a problem. There was no communication between the hospital and the parents or between the doctor and the hospital. Ciaran Staunton says "I don't want any other parents to have to sit on your couch...and that is why we are here today". He has launched a website as tribute to Rory's life and to carry the message to educate parents.
Our prayers and support are with the unstoppable Stauntons. Let's get behind them to educate other parents, school administrators, hospitals, and doctors. Let's help them get their answers.
