New York State Senator Michael Gianaris is a dedicated and energetic New York State Senator representing the neighborhoods of Astoria, Long Island City, Dutch Kills, Sunnyside, and Ridgewood. The communities in his district each have unique characteristics and history. The constituents are the most diverse in the world.
Senators and Assembly Members in New York State serve only two year terms. In 2010, Michael Gianaris gave up his seat in the New York State Assembly to become elected as NY State Senator. On July 27, 2010, OurLIC interviewed and profiled Michael Gianaris during his campaign. On September 11, 2012, we returned to the same office at Taminent Hall to get an update on his accomplishments during his first term of Office, and to listen to his views on todays topical issues, and to hear his priorties for the next term.

Highlights for July 27, 2010:
- Born and raised in Astoria.
- Went to public schools in Astoria.
- Bachelors from Fordam University in Economics
- As a Harvard Law School student, he overlapped with President Obama who was in his 3rd year.
- He served as an Attorney in the State Assembly before becoming an Assemblyman.
- His parents were immigrants. His father is a Professor at Fordham University.
- The Astoria community has been "discovered". Not only is there a large group of immigrants, but there are large groups of young professionals who have discovered that Astoria is affordable and an easy commute to Manhattan.
- States that crime is low in Astoria.
- Astoria produces 60% of the electricity for NYC.
- One thing that Gianaris is most proud of, is improving the quality of air. Toxic pollutants has been a big problem for Astoria. Gianaris has had impact on reducing the pollution..
- Closed a major power plant and replaced it with a state of the art power plant that produces 95% less pollutants.
- Gianaris says that the public is frustrated by the state government's inablity to respond quickly or effectively enough.
- He is an active advocate to reform New York State government, and feels that Mayor Koch and Candidate Cuomo are pursuing ideas and proposals that he has previously advocated.
- Reducing the budget is key. Gianaris voted against the budget last year. The last year's budget was $9 Billion greater than the prior one.
- Wants to increase spending for Education and Hospitals.
- The state needs to be more innovative.
- The Film Industry has been one of the only industries that has grown in this state, and it is a direct result of tax credits. Hundreds of job have been created.
- Need to find targets of economic development, and invest in them. We need to invest in diversification. We need to identify new areas of future growth.
- Gianaris would like to see an' Innovation Czar'. He feels we need someone that focuses on this above all else and that identifying innovations needs to be done in a systemic way.
- Gianaris has signed the New York Uprising Pledge initiated by Mayor Ed Koch. He has been a champion of the independent re-districting process for 5 years.
- Gianaris believes we need campaign financing reform, re-districting reform, and ethics reform.
