WHAT: Dedicating the site for the new Queens Library at Hunters Point; Planting "trees of knowledge" so they can watch them grow, as their new library grows.

WHERE: Center Boulevard at 48th Avenue, adjacent to Gantry Park, Long Island City

DETAILS: Queens Library at Hunters Point will serve the new residential community that is growing up on the East River in Long Island City. The library will be approximately 21,500 square feet. It is being designed by award-winning architect Steven Holl. It will have an emphasis on environmental education. Features will include library areas for children, teens and adults, a communal reading garden. It is being designed to be eligible for LEED Silver certification. Customer service is expected to begin in the summer of 2015.
The total funding for the new library is $28.6 million. Funding has been provided by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Queens Borough President Helen M. Marshall, New York City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, Representative Carolyn Maloney, New York State Senator Michael Gianaris, New York State Assembly Member Catherine Nolan, New York State Assembly Member Aravella Simotas, The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, Queens West Development Corporation and the New York City Economic Development Corporation.
