Long Island City, NY November 1, 2012 -
OurLIC visited the site the The Waterfront Crabhouse on 10/31 and 11/1. The damage from flooding that literally covered the full height of the bar, is devasting.
Pumping was continuing today to bring water levels down, while the water was continuing to come in to the basement. Anyone with a portable gas powered pump should consider helping.
A location "walking survey" of Long Island City on October 31, 2012. revealed several areas of damage, but, none as completely devastating as The Waterfront Crabhouse. It is yet another tragic event for the restaurant and its owner Tony Mazzarella and family. [ Confirmed ]
Located near the lowest land area of Hunters Point almost adjacent to the East River, The Waterfront Crabhouse had flood water as high as its bar during the Hurricane Sandy flooding.
This "institution" and community center was hit by a milder flooding during Hurricane Irene, and suffered a major fire in 2009. The HISTORY OF THE WATERFRONT CRABHOUSE, and its origin as a hotel before the tunnels, is part of the history of Long Island City.
Offering a unique seafood and steak menu, The Waterfront Crabhouse is one of the most popular restaurants in Queens and New York City.
Tony Mazzarella, owner, has a long history of doing good things for the community, often without much fanfare. He has been an active supporter of the American Cancer Society, and founded the Patti Fund to raise money to support children with cancer and their families.
On Thursday, March 11, 2010 The Waterfront Crabhouse hosted a dinner at Hope Lodge, New York City. Hope Lodge offers free, temporary housing for cancer patients and their families who are undergoing treatment. More than a place to stay, Hope Lodge is a home away from home, offering a comfortable and supportive environment for encouragement and healing. Through its Patti Fund, The Waterfront Crabhouse, its founder Tony Mazzarella, Tony Dipippo, and friends have made a generous commitment to the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge. The Patti Fund, Care for Childhood Cancer is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to improving the quality of life and provision of care for children and adolescents with cancer. The Patti Fund has established the Patti Fund Family Room at Hope Lodge in NYC.
Mazzarella is also well known to be active in the Long Island City community. He, along with Joe Conley, now Chair of Community Board #2, was one of the founders of the Long Island City Business Development Corporation. More recently, Tony helped to get the new Long Island City / Astoria Chamber of Commerce formed.
At the Veteran Boxers Association Ring 8 meeting on December 19, 2010, Melvina Lathan, New York State Athletics Commissioner, announced the appointment of Tony Mazzarella as Honorary Deputy Commissioner.
In 1982, Tony was first appointed Deputy Commissioner under Governor Mario Cuomo. In 1995, he was reconfirmed and appointed as an Inspector.
Melvina Lathan said "He is known for his integrity, his dedication, and his total unassuming charactor. He is giving and loving".
An active promoter of boxing, Tony lobied to have The Waterfront Crabhouse designated as NY State's Boxing Hall of Fame. That happened! Mazzarella has hosted the regular meetings RING 8 members, Boxers helping boxers, for 30 years. The restaurant has been the home of, and regular meeting location for, the Long Island City / Astoria Chamber of Commerce.
During the late 1990's and until 2006, Tony promoted Amateur boxing matches inside The Waterfront Crabhouse (on the second floor), in the parking lot / street in front of his restaurant, and in the Tennisport bubble across the street. [ International Amateur Boxing / Interview with Peter Phelan, Vauxhall Motors, UK ]
Prayer go to Tony Mazzarella, Bobby, Kris, and everyone at the Crabhouse. WE ALL wish a speedy and full recovery.
We hope that people in the community CAN and will help The Waterfront Crabhouse and Tony Mazzarella at this incredible time of their need.
