Community Speaks Out Against Liquor License for an ADULT ESTABLISHMENT Site at 42-50 21st Street, Long Island City, NY 10/2/2010
|
Long Island City, New York October 6, 2010 -
GLC ENTERTAINMENT CORP. proposed to establish an ADULT ESTABLISHMENT club at 42-50 21st Street, Long Island City, NY. Community Board # 2 had opposed their application for a liquor license on a number of grounds. A battle raged in the media, with the owner of GLC Entertainment threatening to open an establishment with full nudity rather than a strip club.

Joe Conley, Chairman of Community Board #2 alerted the Community that a hearing was pending, and made an appeal that the Board needed the support of the community to defeat the application. [ Go to OurLIC Announcement from Community Board ]
On October 6th, the New York State License Authority heard the case and rejected the application.
Full testimony was video recorded by OurLIC and is being loaded to make available with this article.
Those testifying in opposition, and urging the SLA to deny the application include:
- Santiago Varqez, Community Liason for Assembly Member Cathy Nolan
- Assembly Member Cathy Nolan (By Letter to the SLA)
- Joe Kenton, Community Liason for City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer
- Joe Conley, Chairman of Community Board #2
- Patrick O'Brien, Vice Chair of Community Board #2 and Chairperson of City Services and Public Safety Committee
- Jeff Travia, Vice Chair of Long Island City Business Improvement District
- Gayle Baron, President of LICBDC (By Letter to the SLA)
- Andrew Anzalone, Community Board Member and Lifelong Resident of Long Island City
- Arthur Rosenfield, OurLIC [Testimony and Letter to SLA ]
Commissioners denied the application based on legal reasons relating to the applicants background, and the poor relationship the financial partner of the applicant has with the SLA stemming from another location in Manhattan.
Chairman Rosen made important additional comments about the unique quality of the situation and referred to the "...vision the community has for itself."
The video included with this article provide full content and remarks by all three commissioners. We have also except Chairman Rosen's final commentary in a video slice in which he states:
"I concur with the other Commissioners. I agree with the bases that they have offered."
"I would just add, this community is at a very, very historic point. They are...This community is reinventing itself. So, I think this is a unique situation that we are faced with. A lot of people, business people, people living there as residents, have come together with different government agencies, with a vision to create a new Long Island City. And, this (ed. adult entertainment club) just doesn't fit that vision. I think to allow this would be against the public interest. For that reason, as well as the reasons that my fellow commissioners have articulated.....[reference to NY POST Article refering threat of 'without alcohol, exotic dancers can dance fully nude, and the legal age drops to 18' ] ...........I don't think that was a fruitful way to conduct a dialog with the people representing the residents of that area......This is not the kind of guy that we want running this kind of a place in this setting."
"I also vote to disapprove."

Community Scores Victory Against Unwelcome Adult Night Club
Community Board 2, Council Member Van Bramer, Assembly Member Nolan, Chairman Conley and Local Businesses Unite at SLA Hearing
On Wednesday, October 6th, 2010 elected and community leaders came together at a State Liquor Authority (SLA) hearing in downtown Manhattan to speak out against an adult club that was applying for a liquor license to operate in Long Island City.
The adult club, which is operated by GLC Entertainment, was planning on opening their doors at 42-50 21st Street in Long Island City under the name Sin City. However thanks to strong opposition by Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, Assembly Woman Cathy Nolan, Community Board 2 Chairman Joseph Conley and local residents their plans of operation came to a screeching halt at an SLA hearing today. Elected officials and community members had an opportunity to voice their concerns directly to the SLA about why the establishment’s request to obtain a liquor license would harm and devalue the fabric of their community. Thanks to the united community opposition, the SLA decided to deny the company’s request for a liquor license – a victory that Long Island City and Dutch Kills Residents were thrilled to hear.
“A community is only as strong as the people who care about it,” said Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer. “I am proud to have joined with my colleagues and neighbors in successfully speaking out against an establishment that would have harmed the character and safety of our communities. Long Island City is the gateway to Queens, and as such must retain the high standards its residents are accustomed to.”
“I applaud the SLA’s decisions to deny GLC Entertainment Corporation’s application for a liquor license at 42-50 21st Street in Long Island City,” said Assembly Member Cathy Nolan. “I want to thank Joe Conley and Community Board 2 for leading the fight on this issue. I am opposed to any establishment that would have a negative effect on the quality of life in our neighborhood and that is so passionately opposed by residents and community groups. The LIC business community is very vibrant; this would have had a negative impact both on existing industrial areas and the emerging residential area.
“This is great news for the community, it shows that when a community is united how we can win,” said Community Board 2 Chairman, Joseph Conley. “Thank you to everyone for taking the time to send letters and for showing such great support at the hearing.”
“This was a real triumph for the community, It was the wrong use at the wrong time in the wrong place, and the applicant, who was thoroughly disingenuous throughout the application process, picked the wrong community to threaten,” said Pat O'Brien, Community Board 2 Chairman of City Services. “It shows that the public process can work when so many components, from our elected officials to business interest to community residents, pull together with the same purpose.”
“Our neighborhood is in the midst of an $80 million capital improvement program that is transforming the streetscape of Long Island City to attract investment and make our community a more welcoming place to live and do business,” said Executive Director of the Long Island City Business Improvement District, Gayle Baron. “We commend the SLA for listening to the wishes of the community and rejecting GLC Entertainment’s application for a liquor license. By doing so they have ensured the continual economic growth of Long Island City.”
