Long Island City, NY June 7, 2012 -
The last regular meeting of the Queens Community Board #2 before a two month summer break was held at the Sunnyside Community Center.
Michael Bass, Program Manager for "Ready New York" of New York City Office of Emergency Management spoke to the members because parts of the community's district are located in high impact areas along the East River.
NYC Department of Trasportation for Queens presented the new NYC Bike Share program that will offer 10,000 bicycles from 600 kiosk locations. [ See OurLIC NEW: Bike Share Plan for Long Island City ].
NY Senator Michael Gianaris updated the Board members on the status of current activities, as well as final redistricting decisions that left him in the District which he was elected to represent. He also praised the strength of the Staunton family for the recent loss of their twelve year old son.
NY City City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer made a plea for the Community Board #2 members to vote "Yes" for a controversial resolution requested by 32BJ Union to support their workers. [ See OurLIC NEWS: Community Board #2 Has a Big Agenda and a Full House at its April Meetihng ]
Several 32BJ union members spoke about the need for safety training and advancement opportunity that is provided by the union. They asserted that such training was not provided by employers in the buildings where non-union workers are employed.
One Community Board Member, who lives in a building managed by a 32BJ union, said that his building has had to advance the union as much as $50,000 because the union failed to fund their pension fund properly. He also stated that he was not aware of any record of training by the 32BJ workers in his building.
The Community Board discussed a modified resolution presented by Joe Conley, and ultimately approved it with one member obstaining, and another voting no.
Essentially, the resolution supports the fair and equitable treatment of all employees at all times; and, the ability for all employees to seek fair and just compensation for their services including benefits, training and opportunity; and, for the rights of any employee to seek these without fear of reprisals. It was resolved that the Community Board #2 supports the rights of all union and non-union workers within its borders and beyond to seek and receive fair and just wages and benefits of their services. The resolution further states that the Comunity Board #2 strongly supports the rights of all workers to seek to organize as collective bargaining units to negotiate with their employers; and that the community board #2 strongly urges all parties to engage in meaningful, good faith discussion and negotiation as may be necessary to insure the rights of all parties as respected and protected under the law in a timely and expeditious manner.
During the meeting, the members were informed that these rights are protected under the labor laws in the United States; and enforced by the National Labor Relations Board. The Chair, Joeseph Conley, made note that 32BJ was mentioned in the resolution because they brought the request to the Community Board, but it was the intention of the Community Board #2 resolution to direct its meaning to all employees, all employers, and any and all unions.
Others speaking out in support of the resolution included Brent O'Leary, Founder of Hunters Point Civic Association and former candidate for New York City Council.
OurLIC was at the Community Board #2 meeting and presents a full video of the proceedings with this article including a reading of the final resolution to support labor.
