Long Island City, New York November 18, 2011 -
Residents and business owners brought twenty-five hundref pounds of electronic equiment, computer hard drives, cell phones, monitors, and computers to be destoyed at the America Recyles Day in Long Island City at 48th Avenue and Vernon Blvd.
More than a celebration, America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling in the United States. It’s one day to inform and educate, one day to get our neighbors, friends and community leaders excited about recycling.
The event was hosted by Guardian Data Destruction, an LIC based company that provide data destruction services throughout the US. The event was provided as a community service, and disposal was free of charge.
Supporting sponsor included The Nick Vaglica Agency of Nationwide Insurance, Alma Bank , NY Minute, Bigcitygraph-x , and OurLIC. Nick Vaglica, agent of Nationwide provided coffee and cake pastries from Foodcellar Market.
President of Guardian Data Destruction, Glenn Laga said It is very important for people today to realize that data still resides on their hard drive even though their computers are dead and obsolete."
"We did this e-waste event so that businesses and residents could bring down their IT equipment so that we can recycle it for them" said Laga.
As of January this year, New York State law prohibits residents and businesses from disposing of equipment by putting it on the street for sanitation department pickup.
Guardian Data Destruction also had support from the 108th Precinct of the NYPD and the 108th Community Council because the event was a community service. In addition, merchant and businesses troughout Long Island City supported the event by placing announcement posters in their windows and doors.
