Long Island City, NY August 26, 2012 -
The Kiwanis Club of Astoria / Long Island City along with the FDNY and the Astoria Historical Society brought new dimension to the street fair held on 31st Street and Ditmars Blvd August 26th.
The public service organization, Kiwanis, made a commitment to IRRADICATE Maternal / Neonatal Tetenus. It is part of a partnership project with UNICEF and other organizations. Called PROJECT ELIMINATE, the local Kiwanis chapter's table at the Street Fair was set up to provide education and collect donations for this problem that causes an estimated 60,000 babies to die each year in 40 countries.
The FDNY had a team of instructor and a demonstration truck to help increase awareness of fire hazards in homes. OurLIC is providing video of this instruction with this article. One of the most important points of reminder is that a fire alert device give you the TWO MINUTES that you need to save lives of you and your family.
The Astoria Historical Society provided interesting background and offered books. One pressing question pursued by OurLIC was the accurate geographic boundaries of what is now called LIC or Long Island City. On our special video conversation with The Astoria Historical Society we learn the origins of Long Island City...and that it officially includes Hunters Point, Dutch Kills, Astoria, Sunnyside, Steinway, and Woodside. This is actually the general area that OurLIC has been referring to as Greater Long Island City. For those interested, the details arediscussed the video with this article.
