Come Be a Part of the First Ever Statewide Park Appreciation Day!
I Love My Park Day
Saturday May 5

Saturday, May 5th, 2012, 10 AM to Noon
Join Friends of Gantry Plaza State Park, Parks & Trails New York and the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation for the first annual statewide state parks appreciation day, I Love My Park Day. Your help is really needed to keep the plants and gardens of Gantry Plaza State Park in good shape. Volunteers will be focusing on the beautiful gardens at the southern end of the park. We will be doing some light weeding and then spreading mulch throughout the garden to curtail the growth of weeds. We will also be placing plant markers to identify many of the plants that grace the gardens. Meet in Gantry Plaza State Park at 49th Avenue and Center Boulevard by the East River.

Register ahead of time for this morning of service
Click here to register for this day. By registering using the Parks & Trails New York registration page you are also completing the necessary NYS Volunteer Service Agreement for the year and don't need to print out the Volunteer Service Agreement and bring it with you.

New York Cares Day Spring a Rousing Success!

Over 80 volunteers from Friends and New York Cares were on hand at Gantry Plaza State Park on Saturday, April 21st for New York Cares Day Spring. The volunteers worked with surgical precision and intense focus to remove all the weeds from a large bed of ground cover that will be planted with 500 more plants to increase the density of ground cover and choke out the weeds. This project will make a big visual impact on the park. A big Thank You to everyone that worked so hard. More photos on our gallery page located here.

Membership and Fundraising Drive

Friends of Gantry's largest and most comprehensive membership and fundraising drive to date is underway! With the doubling of the size of Gantry Plaza State Park in 2009 (and more to come) and the growing number of Street Trees as a result of the city's Million Trees program, Friends of Gantry Neighborhood Parks needs new volunteers and donors to keep up with the growing needs of the park and neighborhood. Friends must get the word out about the organization, what we do and what we need.

New website

Omar De Leo, one of the many dedicated volunteers who helps in the park through New York Cares, generously donated his professional services to design and launch our new websitewww.FriendsofGantry.org. An introductory/informational postcard was funded through a grant awarded by Parks & Trails New York, PTNY.org, and sent to 12,500 residences in Hunters Point and nearby Sunnyside and a press release was sent to the newspapers and blogs of Long Island City and Western Queens.

What you can do
Please consider becoming a contributing member of the Friends group. A minimum $10 donation entitles you to become a voting member of our organization and your opinion and vote to count as we build the group to keep up with the burgeoning Long Island City Neighborhood. Use the Network for Good button at the bottom of the page to donate or join.

Our events and community meetings are open to the general public. We hope to see you there!

Project Fundraising

Planned projects
In this time of shrinking public funding, Friends relies on your generous donations to help care for the landscape of Gantry Plaza State Park and the neighborhood city parks and street trees. We are looking to raise about $8,000.00 for our spring and summer events and projects which include mulching, plants, plant markers, gardening supplies and some help from a professional landscaper to restore a couple of ornamental beds that need new plants and more experience and skill than can be provided by volunteers alone.

How you can help
Without your help these events and projects are not possible. Please consider donating to help Friends keep your park and green spaces in great shape. Click on the button below to donate now. A minimum $10 donation entitles you to become a voting member of our organization.

Our thanks
Friends would like to acknowledge the generous donations made by our long time member,John Edebohls, and his brother, Charles P. Edebohls, who provided the major funding needed to complete a plant marker program in the Gantry Gardens. These markers will be placed in the gardens as part of the I Love My Park Day on May 5th.

Another important project, the restoration of a large bed of Euonymus Purple Winter Creeper is being made possible through the hands-on work of Friends and New York Cares Volunteers plus a significant financial contribution by TF Cornerstone which is funding a professional landscaper to come in with over 500 new plants and mulch. Friends is very appreciative of TF Cornerstone's generous donation and looks forward to an ongoing partnership with this company which owns several buildings fronting on the park.

Projects in the works
Friends is also working with a landscaper to come up with a solution to a large bed of ornamental grasses that have died near the playground. The estimate for replacing the plants of this prominently located bed at the entrance to the playground and the northern section of the park is $3,150. This solution would involve the planting of over 175 mature, beautiful Catmint plants which do very well in our park. Other alternatives will be explored. Friends is seeking funding from our members and supporters to help fund this restoration.

Please consider donating to our important work. Use the button below to donate to or join Friends, or, if you prefer, print out a membership/donation form here and mail in your contribution.
