Long Island City, New York December 19, 2010 - Boxing is an international sport, which some historians say began in England. So the story of a British Boxing team traveling to  a boxing match against Queens Boxers in a ring on the second floor of  one of Long Island City's favorite restaurants is both interesting and relevant. ...and even more relevant today because that restaurant has just been named the launch location for the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame. In the late 1990's, and as recently as 2006, the upstairs private banquet room, now called The Terrace, at The Waterfront Crabhouse was the scene of Boxing in Long Island City.  Tony Mazzarella, a Boxing fan and owner of the The Waterfront Crabhouse, made the events happen with the co-operation of counterparts in other countries. Peter Phelan, Vauxhall Motors in the UK, was one of the people who connected with Tony to bring amateur boxers to the US. OurLIC interviewed Peter while he was in the United States to attend the Ring 8 Veteran Boxers Association Annual Award Dinner. The video conversation is presented with this article.  Phelan tells of his trips to the US to fight the Queens and Bronx boxers. The TERRACE is now the main meeting room for the monthly meeting of Ring 8. On the third Tuesday of each month, some of the most prominent boxers gather to trade stories, and also to support the needs of other boxers.   Today, THE TERRACE ~ the second floor of The Waterfront Crabhouse ~ is an elegant private party room. It is hard to imagine that this room was once used as a center for International Amateur Boxing Matches in Long Island City. Peter Phelan, Vauxhall Motors.
