Long Island City, NY July 4, 2012 -
The Treaty of Paris ended the Revolutionary War in 1783.
Whle the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th, 1776, that was just the beginning of the struggle with Great Britain that became the first world war involving France, Spain, Canada, and American Indians. It ended September 3, 1783 with the Treaty of Paris. The Treaty of Paris marked the official end of the Revolutionary War and America's Independence. It also defined territories such as Puerto Rico, the Phillipines, and others to be under control of superpowers. This seven year world war is relevant not only to the celebration of July 4th as Independence Day for America, but also to a globe that is marked by struggles for democracy in many countries; and, the role that the United States plays as the pre-eminent leader of the free world.
New York City and New York State played important roles in the battles of the Revolutionary War. Battles in Saratoga during 1777 are generally considered to be turning points in the war. New York City was capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790, before moving to Washington.
Independence Day, the Declaration of Independence, the long Revolutionary War, and the Treaty of Paris are reminders of the brave men and women of the American armed forces around the world, as well as our first responders at home, whose lives are at risk. Protecting freedom and independence each and every day is as difficult as winning it.
WE, THE PEOPLE.... are so very grateful.
