Long Island City, NY November 28, 2012 -
THE LIC DUCK was recently placed in the LIC Community Garden located on 49th Avenue, between Vernon Blvd & Fifth Street in Long Island City, Queens. The LIC Duck or the Yellow Duck, is a permanent sculpture made from laminate. The sculptor is Long Island City's Petra Valentova, whose studio is nearby at 46th Ave and Vernon Blvd.

The project started in 2010 as a proposal for A Lot of Possibilities, a project by artist Anna Lise Jensen, which places art in NYC gardens. Inspired by her son’s love for ducks wandering by waterfront in Long Island City, Petra proposed a sculpture of simplied, enlarged duck for the local community garden. The proposal was approved by the garden’s board and after receiving grant from New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program, she created one to one model from corrugated styrofoam and plaster. After successful Kickstarter campaign the model was professionally cast in reinforced laminate and installed in the garden.
WHY DUCK?
It’s fun. It’s bright and it’s --- yellow. It’s cute. It’s visible. And it’s really friendly! We all remember Duck in some form from our childhood and it doesn’t matter where we grew up. As homage to this deep warm memory and to honest love for our community, I am bringing the Duck to Long Island City.
The Community
This project is based and made in Long Island City and aims to inspire, motivate and enrich the community space open to everyone. The project is partly funded by grant from New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program.
About the LIC Community Garden
The community garden was founded in 1992 by local residents, who needed green space. Its mission is to repurpose, reuse and beautify the neighborhood – the Duck is already becoming it's landmark, it’s symbol and it’s attraction. LIC Community garden members are advocates for parks and green spaces in Queens and local community and have been involved in the development of Long Island City for the past 30 years. The garden has also won awards in 1993, 1995 and The Daodil Project award in 2010. Garden’s composting program has expanded in the past couple years with workshops for LIC community and neighborhood children and their parents. More information can be found at petravalentova.com.
