Long Island City, NY August 16, 2012 -
Dan Halloran, Republican Candidate for US House of Representatives, was the Guest at Long Island City / Astoria Chamber of Commerce regular meeting August 16, 2012. NYC City Council Member Dan Halloran was elected to the City Council in 2009 on the Republican, Conservative, Independence and Libertarian party lines to represent Northeast Queens. As a lifelong resident of Queens, he has launched a campaign for a seat in the US House of Representatives in New York's new Sixth Congressional District.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Halloran began by telling the members about his early family start. First his great-grandparents lived in Manhattan, and then moved to Queens.
- Hallorans family has roots in the NYC Police Department. His Grandfather was a homicide detective. His great-grandfather was Chief of Police in the City of New York.
- He owned a bar and restaurant on Bell Boulevard.
- He worked in the Prosecutors Office until joining a private law firm, then became a partner in the firm as a trial attorney. He took 44 felony cases and won all but four.
- In 2008 he ran for New York Council. Halloran credits the late Dee Richards (Times Ledger Newspapers) for pushing him into the race. He had a lot of support "from strange places" such as unions like the Carpenters Union, the Seargents Benevolence Union, and the Fire Marshalls Union.
- He won by 6.5 % because he grew up in the neighborhood.
- The new 6th Congressional District was made by a Judge. About 35% of his City Council District is in the 6th Congressional District.
- Halloran is running because he says America is running in the wrong direction. He belives this is true from "practical perspective". "Obamacare...At the end of the day" Halloran says about it "no matter how you feel about it, your small businesses are not going to be able to afford the cost of bearing it."
- He says about Obamacare "Not to mention that there are a bunch of built in taxes that you do not even realize." He says "If you sell your home, and it is worth more than $400,000, there is a 4% tax you are going to pay at closing. You don't know it." He follows "No one told you about it."
- He says Obamacare does not solve the healthcare crisis because it is far less expensive to pay the fine than to pay for the mandatory purchase of healthcare under the law. He says many people will not pay.
- He says that the cost of healthcare have gone up since the bill was passed because providers are pushing them up to prepare for the implementation of the law.
