YESTERDAY …
Twenty years before the 1886 Statute of Liberty dedication announced to the world, “Give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,” The Floating Hospital (“TFH”) was already providing a healthcare safety-net forNYC’s poorest and most vulnerable families.
Launched in 1866 as NYC’s first pediatric charity clinic, TFH has provided a healthier and more hopeful future to over 5 million New Yorkers. It began as part of the St. John’s Guild of Trinity Church philanthropic efforts as a way for the City’s poorest orphans, homeless and immigrant children to escape the crushing heat, filth and diseased conditions of a typical 1800’s summer spent in the NYC tenements.
Free ferry rides and countryside excursions initially sponsored by the New York Times offered boys and girls working as child laborers (including the Times’ own newsboys) the opportunity to experience “fresh air and healthy food” for the first time in their young lives.
TODAY …
Our TFH Family Health Network remains dedicated to ensuring that every New Yorker has the opportunity to get top-quality health care at a price they can afford. Now headquartered in Long Island City Queens, TFH continues its legacy as “NYC’s Family Doctor” through two unique programs. Our Homeless Families Program operates at the LIC main clinic and six satellite sites located within the NYC family shelter system, providing 80,000+ patient visits annually to women and children from all five boroughs.
Opened in October 2009, Healthy LIC, The Floating Hospital Community Health Center, is a newly renovated 6,200 square foot facility conveniently located near Queensboro Plaza. It offers a fully integrated approach to keeping family members of all ages healthy, providing compassionate and comprehensive primary medical, dental and mental health care to the entire medically underserved Northwest Queens neighborhood.
