Long Island City, New York February 21, 2011 -
Bill Gallo wrote in his Sunday, February 20, 2011, THE GALLO PAGE for the Daily News "The one man who always comes through in this city, Mr. Donald Trump, called me in response to the suggestion I made in last weeks column for an Ali-Frazier Statue. I am pleased to tell you that he is interested in the project and is studying it."
Gallo's prior article, "Ex-boxers pledge help with monumental task", shows a drawing of a statue and states that Ring 8 is ready to get behind the project.
When it comes to Boxing, Tony Mazzella is the qualified expert. Tony is Deputy Commissioner of Athletics, an active Board member of Ring 8, and the owner of The Waterfront Crabhouse. He points out that the Statue project actually began in 2006 when he and the Ring 8 Board began seeking help from a marketing organization to pursue the Ali / Frazier Statue.
But wait. The time, the place, and the circumstance has changed.
- On December 19, 2011, at the Annual Meeting of Veteran Boxers Association Ring 8 and Melvina Latham, Chairlady, New York State Athletic Commission, announced that the New York Boxing Hall of Fame was going to be in Long Island City, and that the starting location would be The Waterfront Crabhouse - home to Ring 8. - In other relevant news, on February 9, 2011 the City of New York has announced that it will break ground in March at Hunters Point South for the largest affordable housing that has been built in NYC since the 70's. Along with the housing, two new schools and a massive waterfront open space park area are planned for the East River along the Hunters Point South river's edge. That park will actually connect with the NY State Gantry Plaza and Park that runs further north along the river. [ Go to Article ]
Furthermore, even Madison Square Garden has its origin in nearby Sunnyside. Historically, Madison Square Garden was originally Sunnyside Gardens. Some of the boxing history is available at The Queens Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce website in an article Boxing Memento Comes Home presenting an article by Pat Dorfman who, along with John Edebohls and Luke Adams, has gathered interesting historical background about Sunnyside Gardens sports arena (torn down in 1977).
It is clear that Long Island City's Hunters Point is a winning location for a statue commemorating the Ali / Frazier Fight.
March 8th is the 40th Anniversary of the Ali vs. Frazier Fight. It also marks a good time for Donald Trump to meet with Ring 8 Board of Directors, or meet with Tony Mazzarella, a New York State Deputy Commissioner of Athletics, to work out a plan for this statue.
