Special Events Visitors Guide Info: 1. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A YELLOW TAXI AND LIVERY CAR?
There are many differences, but a taxi cab and a livery car are largely similar in that they are provide a car ride from place to place in the five boroughs of New York City, under guidelines which are strictly enforced by the city of New York Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) for passenger, pedestrian, traffic and driver safety.
Generally, a yellow taxi cab ride is more expensive than a livery car ride in that the cost to the passenger is usually not fixed in advance, because on the meter in a yellow cab, the fare increases due to the length of time the ride takes, and the distance.
A livery car ride costs a set price, available in advance to the passenger, no matter what length of time the ride takes, or the route taken, usually benefiting the passenger.
Generally, in areas outside of Manhattan, livery cars are more prevalent and popular, because there is not the same concentration of customers to support yellow taxicabs, and their ability to pick up a passenger off the street. (See: May I hail a livery car?). Sunnyside, Woodside and Long Island City are the frequent site of yellow cabs going to and from Manhattan, but generally, those drivers want to operate within Manhattan where the fares are 'fast and furious.' Our customers want to be picked up at a specific, predetermined location and a certain time, and taken to a certain, predetermined location, for a fixed rate, and in comfort.
2. MAY I HAIL PRONTO CAR?
No. NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission strictly forbids livery cars from picking up passengers without prior reservation, the price fixed in advance, made by the licensed Livery Car Service, Pronto Car Service. These rules protect passengers from danger, price gouging, or unpleasant service. If a driver accepts a passenger outside of a licensed livery company, he or she commits a crime, which quickly results in the losing of the livery car license. So if you as a passenger accept such a ride, you are not only in an unlicensed and uninsurable situation, your driver is taking a risk, which in itself shows the driver to be an unlawful and risk-taking individual.
Many of Pronto's livery car drivers have worked with Pronto and in this is area most of their adult lives, are known to passengers. Our drivers pride themselves on giving a safe, comfortable ride. They prefer passengers who have made pre-arrangements that protect both the driver and passenger.
3. WHAT ARE THE NEW RULES FROM NYC TAXI & LIMOUSINE COMMISSION, PROTECTING THE RIGHTS OF A LIVERY PASSENGER?
Livery Passenger's Bill of Rights. You are entitled to:
Ride in a car that is clean, in good condition, and has passed all required inspections; Be driven by a TLC-licensed driver in good standing whose license is clearly displayed; A safe and courteous driver who obeys all traffic laws; A quiet trip, free of horn-honking and audio/radio noise; Receive a fare quote from the dispatcher and pay that amount for your ride (unless the trip changes); A driver who does not use a cell phone while driving (hands-free phones are not permitted); A smoke and scent free ride; Air-conditioning or heat on request; Working seatbelts for all passengers ~ please use them! Not share a ride, unless you want to; Be accompanied by a service animal; Decline to tip for poor service.
4. ARE ALL LIVERY CAR SERVICES ALIKE?
Most companies that survive over many years are doing something right. We pride ourselves in being the very best car service with the best and most knowledgeable drivers, the cleanest cars, the best reputation and a superior safety record. We at Pronto Car Service know that each ride is an opportunity for us to succeed, grow and continue to be the same safe and dependable neighborhood car service we have been for eighteen years in Sunnyside, Woodside and Long Island City. We want to stay in business and that means pleasing you.
5. SHOULD I TIP? WHO PAYS TOLLS?
The rates for rides are set by Pronto Car Service and do not include tip or tolls. It is generally accepted that a passenger will tip 15% or more for service. You are not compelled to tip, and it is your right to withhold a gratuity if you feel your service is not as promised.
6. WHO DECIDES THE ROUTE TO GO?
Pronto Car Service prides itself on hiring the best and most knowledgeable drivers who know the best and fastest routes within NYC, which differ due to days of the week or hours of the day. But New York City traffic and street/highways closings are highly unpredictable, and no one can promise for certain that any one route is best at all times. It is for that reason that Pronto Car Service, unlike the rest, lets you the passenger decide what route you wish to take. Often, a passenger has traversed a route back and forth more often than any one driver, and knows best. We instruct our drivers to allow you to determine the route. And you may rest assured, that if needed, the dispatcher is available in real time to advise a driver on directions or better routes with state-of-the-art technology.
7. WILL I GET BETTER SERVICE WITH A CORPORATE ACCOUNT? While we do love getting a call from a new customer, because it is an opportunity to make a lifelong client and show what we can do, there is some benefit to callers who have a monthly-billed account. Some of our long-term customers, for instance, have to be a certain place and a certain time each day. Because we know that in advance, we can plan to have adequate staffing so that we can provide the best service, deploying our drivers in a way that handle business in an impossible-to-plan business. And say, if the dispatcher has to establish any kind of priority in a rare but possible situation between having to service a new customer or a monthly account customer more expeditiously, the dispatcher must choose wisely. We do hear from our Corporate Customers (you do not have to be a Corporation to apply for an account), that they wished they had done it sooner. They like the easier monthly billing and the written record with no fuss for their tax and evaluation purposes.
8. WHO MAY I CONTACT IF I AM UNHAPPY WITH MY SERVICE?
Pronto Car Service prides itself on having glowing recommendations and testimonials from its customers 99% of the time, but there is always a driver who has just lost a day's pay due to a traffic ticket, or a NYC traffic issue that was made a route impenetrable, or a dispatcher who is having a rough day. We ask that you evaluate our service in the overall, BUT DO NOT HESITATE to leave a message for Rigo Cardoso, who will address your complaint and make it right, if he can. We have survived year after year by making you, the customer, the center of our business. And please don't hesitate to call with a compliment, too!
9. HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET TO MANHATTAN FROM THE AIRPORT?
The time of travel with vary with rain, snow, cold weather, city events and traffic. Travel time, under the average circumstances, would be APPROXIMATELY:
From LaGuardia Airport (LGA), Queens, 40 minutes From John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Queens, 60 minutes From Newark Liberty International Airport (EWB), Newark, New Jersey: 75 minutes From MacArthur Airport (ISP), Ronkonkoma, Long Island: 90 minutes From Teterboro Airport (TEB), Bergen County, New Jersey: 30 minutes
10. MAY I HIRE A PRONTO CAR FOR A PART OR A WHOLE DAY?
Sure! Call us and let us find the right driver for you and set up a pre-determined price for business or leisure.
