Long Island City, February 25, 2019 - The Long Island City Business Development Corporation LICBDC hosted a briefing by three leading City officials who discussed plans for vital areas of civic infrastructure. Maura McCarthy, Queens Commissioner, New York City Department of Transportation; Paul D'Amore, Department Chief of Operations for New York City Department of Parks; Lt. Philip Averson, New York Police Department, 108th Precinct.

Highlights:

  • Safety is a top priority and drives almost everything that the Department of Transportation does. According to Commissioner McCarthy, "Recently, the DOT completed a major rework of Jackson and 11th Street".
  • Streetscapes are important. About to go into construction of Queens Plaza. It will be a totally different place to look at.
  • NYC is reporting the lowest number of deaths do to traffic accidents.
  • Streetlights have been changed throughout Queens from 350Watts to 250Watts for the purpose of saving electricity. The same luminance was achieved by changing the reflective backing in the street light.
  • Experimenting with a "warm mix" asphalt which costs less to produce.
  • The 311 system is very effective for the DOT for things like potholes. Calls produce an immediate work order.
  • The Parks Department has 3700 employments, 535 in Queens. Queens Parks consists of 336 small parks and 61 large parks.
  • The Parks Department has jurisdiction over more than most people realize including triangle, sidewalks, athletic fields, street trees, recreation facilities, playgrounds, pools, bike paths and bike trails, golf courses and more.
  • There is a tree planting initiative as well as a tree and sidewalk initiative for lifted sidewalks. This is accessed through 311.
  • Volunteerism and Corporate involvement is encouraged by the Parks Department.
  • Astoria Park will be getting a new skateboarding area, with construction starting in March 2010.
  • The Police Department recently promoted Inspector Jaun Turo for 108th Precint to position of Community Affairs.
  • The Police Department states there has been an unprecidented crime reduction of 10.5% at end of year 2009. Robberies were down 22%. Assaults down 12.5%. Burgularies down 10.5%. Grand Larcenies down 6.2%. Grand Larceny Auto down 10.0%.
  • New strategies and crime analysis have been applied to reduce crime.
