ANNOUNCEMENT: Annual Community Innovation and Development Awards
|
Long Island City, NY November 24, 2009 - Saying that "Innovation is at the heart of a successful community", OurLIC announced today that it is initiating a new award program for Long Island City. Annual Community Innovation and Development Awards, a series of annual awards, will be presented to residents, merchants, corporations, professionals, and to people from the art community in order to recognize extraordinary contribution and commitment to the growth and improvement of Hunters Point, Astoria, Sunnyside, Woodside, Dutch Kills, Maspeth, and the Business Improvement District.
Starting in 2010, Annual Community Innovation and Development Awards will be presented throughout the year in the following fourteen categories:
- Innovation of the Year (December)
- Man of the Year, Woman of the Year (December)
- LIC Newcomer of the Year (December)
- Job Creator Award (November)
- Merchant & Merchanding Awards (June)
- Advertising, Marketing, and Promotion Awards (May)
- Internet & Web Awards (April)
- Green Awards (September)
- Street & Storefront Awards (July)
- Restaurant & Food Service Awards (July)
- Arts, Entertainment, & Humanities Awards (October)
- My Good Neighbor Award (June)
- Real Estate Developer Award (May)
- Public Service Award (August)
Nominations will be accepted and reviewed by the OurLIC Annual Community Innovation and Development Awards Committee under the direction of a Board of Advisors.

Hunters Point South Open Spaces Project

November 19, 2009 - The Hunters Point South Open Spaces Project was presented at a Public Hearing by Josh Wallack, Office of the Deputy Mayor along with representatives NYC Economic Development Corporation, (EDC), and New York City Parks Department. Members of the community had an opportunity to respond, express support and concerns, and ask questions. Additional comments from Kathy Nolan (State Representative) were presented and read into the record.
Highlights
- Largest Middle Income Housing Development Since the 1970's.
- Transform largely vacant land along the East River in Long Island City.
- Create 4,600 jobs, Catalyze more than \$2 Billion in private investment
- School Planned in conjunction with SCA serving 1,100 intermediate and high scool students to open in 2013.
- 100,000 sq. ft. of neighborhood and national retail space.

Thomas DiNapoli, NYS Comptroller, Keynote Speech at LICBDC Annual Luncheon

Long Island City, NY November 18, 2009 - In his Keynote Speech to over 500 business, professional, and community leaders gathered at the LICBDC Annual Luncheon, Thomas DiNapoli, Comptroller for the State of New York, discussed the State Budget priorities and his view of the growing Long Island City Economy, and investments being made here.
The Comptroller's Office also attempts to find people who have abandoned funds that the state is responsible to hold in a 'FOUND MONEY' account until claimed. DiNapoli presented a check to LICBDC for 'FOUND MONEY' funds that showed up in a search for the organization.

Gary Kesner, William D. Modell Community Service Honoree for 2009.
Mr. Kesner is Vice President of Silvercup Studios, and Chairman of LICBDC. Silvercup Studios (30 Rock, Ugly Betty, Gossip Girl, The Sopranos, Julia, The Devil Wears Prada, What Happens in Vegas ) is the largest independent film , television, and commercial production facility in the northeastern United States. Mr. Kesler supervises operations, administrative, legal, and financial affairs for the company.
Mr. Kesner is not a stranger to community service. He has a long list of accomplishments beginning with a start in community service as a social worker at Hudson Guild Settlement House in Manhattan. There he focused on group work with teenagers and school age children.
Gary Kesner was appointed Commissioner of the New York City Office of Business Development by Mayor Edward Koch in 1986, and served in that position until 1990. After leaving government, Kesner formed a consulting firm that provided management, policy analysis and program development services and advice on real estate issues and financing to private and non-profit organizations.
