Grand Opening of ERDA Federal Credit Union. An American Bandstand Event!

East River Development Alliance (ERDA), cuts the ribbon and celebrates its community by creating another tool to enable residents through effective, innovative resources and solutions.

ERDA Federal Credit Union Grand Opening

Bishop Mitchell Taylor

Long Island City, New York April 26, 2010 - It began with a dream. It became a mission, and then a traditional American Bandstand Event. Now it is a very real part of the promise of a hopeful future for the residents of public housing in Long Island City.

It was the vision of Bishop Mitchell Taylor. He, along with his supporters, and Carolyn Maloney at the Federal level, Cathy Nolan at the State level, Christine Quinn at the NYC City Council, The City of New York, and many others, made it a reality as the ribbon was cut on the new ERDA Federal Credit Union.

US Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney

The celebration that followed the ribbon cutting ceremony marked a point in time when the work of the East River Development Alliance gained full economic force by recognizing and linking the fact that "community banking" is a vital part of personal growth and achievement, as well as creating strong community participants.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg

The event deserved nothing less than an American Bandstand style celebration....the kind you would find in Iowa or Nebraska.

The ERDA Federal Credit Union is the first credit union to be chartered in NYC in ten years; the first new credit union in Queens in 30 years; and the first credit union to receive its federal charter under the Obama administration.

Speakers included:

  • ERDA Founder and President Bishop Mitchell G. Taylor
  • Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of The City of New York
  • Carolyn Maloney, United States Representative
  • Bill de Blasio, Public Advocate
  • Catherine Nolan, New York State Assemblywoman
  • Michael Gianaris, New York State Assemblyman
  • Christine C. Quinn, New York City Council Speaker
  • John Rhea, New York City Housing Authority Chairman
  • John Liu, NYC Comptroller
  • Jimmy Van Bramer, NYC Council Member
  • Peter Vallone Jr, NYC Council Member
  • Eric Gioia, Former City Council Member
  • Bill Taylor, Senior Vice President, Eastern U.S. Power, TransCanada
  • National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions (Federation) President/CEO Clifford N. Rosenthal

Full video coverage of Grand Opening Ceremony and Celebration are available in the left column in 39 segments of approximately three to five minutes each. Go to OurLIC FULL VIDEO and Special Report Coverage of GRAND OPENING of ERDA Federal Credit Union including FULL TEXT OF ERDA Release

Madera Cuban Grill Grand Opening Attracts Hundreds

Madera Cuban Grill Grand Opening

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Grand Opening Madera Cuban Grill and Steak Hours

Long Island City, NY April 30, 2010 - Madera Cuban Grill, the long awaited restaurant that has been launched by Miriam Porto of the Tennisport, had over 500 people at its Grand Opening, not to mention the Emmey Award Nominee for Daytime TV, Danny Kennedy, who came with friends. The kitchen and staff served over 8,000 bite sized samples of their menu items, and managed to run out of an ample supply of wine late into the evening. It was a happy event celebrated by the community, the press, and neighbors, even neighboring restaurant owners. A five piece band played Cuban music all night. Mariam and her husband Danny have been working hard to get their restaurant open.

Since most Americans have never been inside Cuba, the opening of Madera Cuban Grill & Steakhouse is both a cultural experience....as well as culinary delight.

At a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, Miriam and Danny received a Certificate of Award from the Town of Hempstead and The Long Island Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in recognition of their contribution to their greater community area.

Make no mistake, this is a top quality restaurant that will be enjoyed by foodies and the community and by visitors to Long Island City.

Thanks go to Juan J. Toro, Detective / Community Affairs, Long Island City's 108th Precinct, and other officers who did an excellent job of providing traffic control on Vernon Blvd's busy Friday night street.

BulbAmerica: Innovation in Long Island City creates an eCommerce Success Story

Long Island City's BulbAmerica talks to OurLIC about its growth and success with employees that come from the East River Development Alliance (ERDA) Workforce Development Program.

Storage Plus Entrance

Abraham Cohen, President, BulbAmerica

Long Island City, New York May 4, 2010 - One would not expect to find a thriving eCommerce company emerging from a storage company. Innovation, leadership, and creative management has made it happen. The result is positive growth, and improvement for the community.

Abraham Cohen is founder and President of three Long Island City companies that are headquartered just off Van Dam Street, inside the building that displays Storage Plus. His company now employs approximately 60 people across BulbAmerica, Storage Plus, and Avi Moving and Storage. The largest of these companies is BulbAmerica, an eCommerce seller of bulbs and lighting.

The BulbAmerica.com website says it is the largest wholesaler provider of quality lighting fixtures and light bulbs for the US market since 2003. It goes on to explain, "Since day one, our goal has been to earn the trust of our customers. We offer competitive prices along with top notch customer service. We are committed to providing honest and upfront service during every interaction with our customers. We understand that long-term customer satisfaction depends on our ability to maintain a knowledgeable and courteous customer service staff that is assisted by the best support system."

The Foodcellar Market & Eatery Offers New, Innovative Carving Station with Culinary Quality Foods

Chef John Doran prepares imaginative food for the sophisticated tastes of Long Island City residents.

Foodcellar Carving Station

Chef John Doran

Long Island City, New York April 15 - The Foodcellar Market & Eatery has added a "Carving Station" that offers residents of Long Island City something really special....fine culinary quality foods in a market.

Chefs John Doran, a French Culinary Institute trained chef, and Diego Huesca are preparing extraordinarily fine foods from the market's own world-class meat, seafood, cheese, spice, and produce departments. It is both impressive and innovative customer service.

Eighteen months ago, there wasn't a large grocery market serving the residents of Long Island City. With the opening of over a dozen condominium towers, the area has attracted many affluent people who can be demanding.

Foodcellar management had the foresight to build a large, restaurant style kitchen when it opened in September 2008.

As their business grew, and the residents spoke out, the next step was to bring in a Chef who had the knowledge and experience of fine culinary foods. John Doran is a French Culinary School graduate, has worked with world famous Chefs like Andre Soltner, Jacques Pepin, and Marcella Maza. He applied his skills at the popular "River Cafe" in Brooklyn, then helped to establish Bernard's Market & Cafe as a destination for gourmet quality foods.

Prime Rib Roast

Foodcellar Market & Eatery is located at 4-85 47th Road, Long Island City and offers free parking in an adjacent parking lot on 5th Street.

Foodcellar management is committed to buying from local purveyors and entrepreneurs. There are over 100 purveyors in the 'buy local' program including Sutur Farms, Red Jacket Orchards, Eli and Ali, as well as small entrepreneurial producers.

Go to Full Story, Photo Gallery of Food, Video Interviews with Chefs, and Video Interview with Foodcellar Management.

We like to watch and document job creation in Long Island City, and investment in the community. Foodcellar Market & Eatery opened 18 months ago and now employs approximately 108 people. A year ago, Foodcellar employed only 50 people, making it a great example of how innovation builds a community.

"The Missy Factor" Brings Things into Focus for Photographer Jesse Winter

Photographer Jesse Winter has a burst of new recognition with shows in Long Island City, and the opening of his new TEN10 Studio.

Jesse Winter

Photograph by Jesse Winter

Long Island City, New York March 25th - April 25th, 2010 - There is nothing like a fiancee and a pending marriage to focus a young man on his career and dreams...and bring out the best in him. So it is with Jesse Winter (33) , the Long Island City based photographer that has captured people's attention with new photography. He has been in LIC for years, but has now had a burst of promotion that promises to turn his talents into a lucrative business.

Call it "The Missy Factor". Defined, the Missy Factor is the influence that Jesse's fiancee has had on him. (Guys...start painting your walls!)

OurLIC began interviewing Jesse at the suggestion of Tony Vaccaro, a world famous photographer and photojournalist and long time resident of Long Island City.

Tony has been coaching and helping Jesse, and told us that the new images being displayed and promoted at Jesse's show at a local frame shop, were "first class".

While Jesse is best known for his portrait photography, he had been experimenting with a new type of dramatic, panoramic "CompositeLandscape" photography that was getting attention locally and being displayed in Long Island City restaurants. We interviewed Jesse the night of his first showing of the Landscape Composites. The event was a huge success.

It is called THE EDGE CONDOMINIUM... and Carlo, Paolo, and Tony Bordone, along with their Father, Giuseppe, have built ten Condominium units at 23-32 31st Drive in Astoria, near Crescent Street, Broadway, and N Subway Line.

Balconies of 23-32 31st Drive, Astoria

Long Island City and Astoria, New York April 20 - "Location. Location, Location" is everything in the Real Estate business, and in Restaurants. Carlo Bordone and Paolo Bordone recently opened Testaccio Ristorante on Vernon Blvd in Long Island City. [ Go to OurLIC Profile. ]. Testaccio is located at the epicenter of the new, hip area of Vernon Blvd.

View of NYC from 5th Floor

Ten units in their newest construction venture, THE EDGE CONDOMINIUMS, are about to go on the market. The new Condo was built by Carlo Bordone, Paolo Bordone, Tony Bordone, and their father, Giuseppe. Carlo and Paolo are the owners of Testaccio Ristorante, known not only for its exquisite, Roman Style cuisine, but also for its warm and attractive interior design and construction. Testaccio, which serves only the finest foods, is matched only by the quality of workmanship that is seen everywhere in the restaurant.

Not only do these condominiums have the same visible workmanship, the building has a location that will make for a pleasant New York Style living because of its accessiblity, commutablity, views, and neighborhood experience.

A lot of thought has gone into these condos, not the least of which is the storage space that is available to each owner. Some of the storage space is larger than studio apartments we have seen.

Full video tour of the Condominiums with Carlo Bordone as the OurLIC tour guide is available in the left column in eight segments of approximately three to five minutes each.
