Turning Point

Turning Point
August 9, 2010
 New York Uprising
 Former Mayor Ed Koch writes:

I believe last week was a turning point in our effort.  What began as a brainstorming session with close friends and associates is now a full-fledged statewide campaign.

In Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse I stood side-by-side with Democrats, Republicans, incumbents, insurgents -- in some cases people running against each other! -- all local leaders in their own right, and all of us calling for Reform together.

Today the New York Times gave us a terrific boost with a front page article chronicling the trip.  Check out the online edition audio and a slide show.

Apsara-Arts of Asia on Display in Long Island City

This Exhibition of authentic, very beautiful artifacts is available to be privately viewed in Long Island City by appointment.

This is another one of the hidden treasures to be found in LIC.... if you know where to look.

Apsara-Arts of Asia was founded when two art collectors traveling in Indonesia became enthralled with the quality and originality of indigenous textiles and artifacts.

Marvin Berk and his partner Dennis Kord, long time residents of Long Island City, soon returned to build the Apasra collection: each item is hand selected for its beauty and expressive strength. Most date from the 18th to the mid 20th century.

Conversation with Mayor Ed Koch

Mayor Ed Koch speaks out about Albany, Jerusalem, the flotilla attack, and himself during a video conversation with OurLIC on June 4, 2010.

When Mayor Ed Koch speaks, the world listens.

Mayor Koch saved the City of New York from bankruptcy and in doing so restored the pride of New Yorkers.  During his three terms as Mayor from 1978-1989, he restored fiscal stability to the City of New York, and he was responsible for placing the City on a GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Practices) balanced budget basis.  He created a housing program which, over a ten-year period, provided more than 150,000 units of affordable housing financed by City funds in the amount of $5.1 billion.  He created for the first time in New York City a merit judicial selection system and selected some of the most outstanding public servants to serve in his administration.

Prior to being Mayor, Mr. Koch served for nine years as a Congressman and two years as a member of the New York City Council.  He attended City College of New York from 1941 to 1943.  In his last year of college, he was drafted into the Army where he served with the 104th Infantry Division.  He served in the European Theater of Operations, received two battle stars, the Combat Infantry badge, and he was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant in 1946.  In that year, he also attended the New York University School of Law.  He received his LL.B. degree in 1948 and began to practice law immediately thereafter.

CROSSFIT: Hidden Behind the Large Garage Doors of Long Island City.

It is not manufacturing, and it is not a contractor. CROSSFIT of Long Island City is a fitness "center" and is one of the companies that you will find in the retro-fitted space along the Roads and Avenues of Long Island City.

The real estate transformation of Long Island CIty is not just in the new tower condos, or the new office space.

Walk down any Road or Avenue and you will find a growing "underground" of entrepreneurs who are bringing the community amenities and ways to nibble at the evolving quality of life that is making LIC a friendly place to live and work.

CROSSFIT Long Iland City is a good example.  It is a world class fitness program designed to be a non-routine approach to physical fitness.

The Bakery Department at The Foodcellar Market & Eatery. Breads, Cakes, Pastries, Espresso, Gelato, Cupcakes, and smiles.  It's ALL GOOD!

The Foodcellar Market & Eatery is evolved into a center for specialty gourmet foods for Long Island City. The Bakery Department is a great example of their commitment to the neighborhood.

Almost any time of day, if you walk down 47th Road between 5th Street and Center Street, you'll find that it is a bustling strip.  The Foodcellar Market & Eatery  has become a magnet that is drawing people from all over the Long Island City area because of the quality of its food, and the cordiality of its staff and management.

Serving the freshest bakery goodd, the Bakery Department at Foodcellar Market & Eatery is one of the reasons for the growing attractiveness of Long Island City and Hunters Point.  It is also one of the reasons that the Foodcellar has become an obvious success.  Eaten in the store, taken home, or ordered for catering, it is all delicious.

The Butcher Shop for Long Island City at the Foodcellar Market and Eatery

Interview with Sadat

An article in the New York TImes recently reported that there was not a butcher shop in Long Island City.  As most of the people living near the Foodcellar already know, that article was wrong.  Foodcellar Market & Eatery has a prime meat butcher shop, and it sells the kind of top quality cuts that you want from a butcher.

The video with this article is not only instructive about cuts of beef, it also shows that the primal beef is cut daily on premise at Foodcellar Market.

We think that people are moving to Long Island City because the quality of life in the community is high. LIC is a city that was an industrial and manufacturing zone.  Today, the people who are developing it, are starting from scratch. Merchants are innovating. Slowly, they are building the kind of community, just 4 minutes from Manhattan, where the quality of life excels.
