Barbells for Boob's

Barbells for Boob's 'Amazing Grace' fundraiser to benefit Mammograms in Action.

The 'Amazing Grace' Workout and Fundraiser was held by Crossfit member clubs throughout the United States.  Long Island City's members gathered at Anabel Basin.

The CrossFit workout is “Grace”. In this workout, members perform 30 Clean and Jerks for time. The weight used for men is 135 pounds and 95 pounds for women. During the Amazing “Grace” fundraiser all participants could modify the weight used in order to accommodate their physical abilities.

Amazing “Grace” began as a small, local fundraising event to help fund mammograms for the young women who couldn’t afford one themselves. Thanks to a ton of support (and sweat!) from the CrossFit community, the organization was able to raise $4000 and fund their very first mammogram. Before they knew it, CrossFit affiliates from around the world started asking how they could participate and help the cause. One year after the inaugural event, over 150 CrossFit Affiliates will be participating in the 2010 Amazing “Grace” fundraiser!

Michelin Guide "Recommended" and ZAGAT RATING for "Sophisticated Dining" are Presented to Testaccio Ristorante, Vernon Blvd, Long Island City

Michelin Guide has given Testacio Ristorante a "Recommended" Rating.  ZAGAT has rated Testaccio and said it is "Sophisticated Dining".

In its Featured Profile of Testaccio, OurLIC says:

Testaccio is an Inspired Restaurant.

It's "A-number-one" for ambiance, food, and wine. With a spectacular menu, gracious service, and a warm and friendly atmoshphere ~ Testaccio Ristorante welcomes you.

Being there is a pleasure to the senses.

The Chef works magic with the hearty and plentiful Roman-Style cuisine ~ Braised Oxtail, Saltimbocca, beautiful pastas, gnocchi and many other wonderful dishes including the perfection of pizza in their wood burning oven.

All of this is complemented by the decor ~ wooden farmhouse beams, textured walls, lovely artwork, Roman artifacts, and candle light. Authentic pieces have been shipped from Italy to establish the comfort and character of old world Rome.

It is charming and sophisticated....romantic and trendy. That is hard to find.

The creators behind this exciting new restaurant have spared no expense and have much to be proud of as they brin g their vision alive. This is a welcome addition to Vernon Blvd in Long Island City.

Executive Chef Ivan Beacco is quietly changing the way we think about Italian food, and how we eat it. Coupled with his devotion to fresh ingredients, flawless technique and a passion for Roman food, Ivan is shaping the concept of Contemporary Roman cuisine. His is a unique dining experience, which comforts with familiar, flavorful food while it transports one to old world Italy - an absolute necessity for anyone who truly loves Italian food.

Community Board #2 Prevails. New York State Liquor Authority REJECTS  On-Premise Liquor License Application by GLC ENTERTAINMENT CORP for Adult Entertainment Location on 21st Street

After hearing testimony for the applicant, SLA Chairman Dennis Rosen and other Commissioners, supported Community Board #2 and others who strongly urged the SLA to reject the application.

GLC ENTERTAINMENT CORP.  proposed to establish an ADULT ESTABLISHMENT club at 42-50 21st Street, Long Island City, NY.  Community Board # 2 had opposed their application for a liquor license on a number of grounds.  A battle raged in the media, with the owner of GLC Entertainment threatening to open an establishment with full nudity rather than a strip club.

Joe Conley, Chairman of Community Board #2 alerted the Community that a hearing was pending, and made an appeal that the Board needed the support of the community to defeat the application. [ Go to OurLIC Announcement from Community Board ]

Long Island City / Astoria Treated to an International Indie Film Festival

Over 50 International Indie Films Presented

Over 50 International Indie Films were presented at The First Annual LIC / Astoria Film Festival.  They included feature films, documentaries, shorts, music videos and more.   Attendance was estimated to be approximatedly 600 people during the weekend.

OurLIC attendend the Film Festival and viewed a selection of films on both days.  The films we saw were excellent on all levels.  We invited Long Island City's favorite son Tony Vaccaro, the world famous photograph and gifted photo journalist, to join us. At 88, Tony still enjoys a good film and loves to experience the work of other talented people. We consider his judgement on things like art and film to be insightful because of his lifelong experience and pursuit of photo-journaling and profiling the most important and most talented people of his epoch. He has photo profiled virtualy every major film director during his career. His view of this Film Festival seemed t o be important.

Tony agreed that the scripts, acting, direction, technical execution and other elements were engaging and compelling. Tony added: "Wonderful!"  Several of the films brought to light serious topics that left us both feeling that others...everyone...should view them.

Junior's Cafe is  Awarded the "A" RATING by New York City  10/15/2010

Junior's Cafe is the 2nd Full Service Restaurant in Long Island City to be Awarded the "A" RATING by New York City, and the 1st on Vernon Blvd. 10/15/2010

A long time favorite restaurant with Long Island City insiders, Juniors Cafe has been awared the coveted "A" RATING by New York City.

Every city has one. It is an established local spot.

It is usually the oldest restaurant and bar in town. This is Long Island City's.

This one has been on the same corner of 46th Rd and Vernon Blvd for, what they say is, over 80 years.

Some locals have loved this traditional, charming Italian restaurant for their entire lifetime.

It is the kind of place that you could walk by....but don't. Inside is a mix of interesting people, delicious Italian food, plus great steaks and chops.

Some people eat here every night. That's how good it is.

It's definitely a gathering place where the locals and newcomers meet, mingle, and enjoy fun conversation.

They also pour a generous drink.

Hidden in the back, there is a private party room suitable for all type of events and occasions from Bridal Showers to the Super Bowl. There is a beautiful mural painted on all walls, that depicts the villages and town along the coastline of Italy.

Try Junior's Cafe. It is an experience you will enjoy.  Tell them Arthur and Marion sent you.

Practical Acupuncture Opens Community Treatment Clinic in Long Island City

Lennox Morris, L.Ac., Graduate of Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, offers Community Setting Acupuncture with All Treatments on a Sliding Scale Fees from $30-$55

Lennox Morris, a licensed Acupuncturist, has opened PRACTICAL ACUPUNCTURE,  a new treatment clinic at 44-02 11th Street in Long Island City.

Based on what we saw during our two visits to the Practical Acupuncture clinic, we think Lennox Morris is going to be in great demand, and will have a successful practice in Long Island City.  Aside from his skill as an acupuncturist, and the very reasonable pricing model of" community treatments", Lennox himself is a very soft spoken man with  a sense of peacefulness and self assurance that people will like.

OurLIC has visited with Lennox twice, and had the opportunity to video the stories of three people being treated by him.  Their results as told by their testimonials are convincing and compelling.  The treatments ranged from relief of back pain, to skin rash, to a diet addiction to chocolate.

Citigroup Sued by 6 Women Alleging Gender Bias

The women are seeking class action status for women currently and formerly employed at Citigroup at levels including managing director, director, vice president, assistant vice president, associate and analyst, between February 2006 and the present.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Citigroup Inc was accused in a gender bias lawsuit by six women, who said the bank ran an outdated "boys club" that denied women professionals equality with men in pay, assignments and promotions.

The lawsuit filed in Manhattan federal court on Wednesday is the latest in a history of allegations of gender discrimination in the financial services industry, including a complaint one month ago against Wall Street's most profitable bank, Goldman Sachs Group Inc .

Goldman said the lawsuit was without merit and Citigroup said on Wednesday that 13 top positions were occupied by women, from chief executive officer of Citi Financial North America, to head of North America markets to general counsel of consumer banking.

"These cases haven't gone away. You still see them with some degree of frequency," said Professor Christine Chung of Albany Law School in Albany, New York.
