Long Island City / Astoria Treated to an International Indie Film Festival

Over 50 International Indie Films Presented

Over 50 International Indie Films were presented at The First Annual LIC / Astoria Film Festival.  They included feature films, documentaries, shorts, music videos and more.   Attendance was estimated to be approximatedly 600 people during the weekend.

OurLIC attendend the Film Festival and viewed a selection of films on both days.  The films we saw were excellent on all levels.  We invited Long Island City's favorite son Tony Vaccaro, the world famous photograph and gifted photo journalist, to join us. At 88, Tony still enjoys a good film and loves to experience the work of other talented people. We consider his judgement on things like art and film to be insightful because of his lifelong experience and pursuit of photo-journaling and profiling the most important and most talented people of his epoch. He has photo profiled virtualy every major film director during his career. His view of this Film Festival seemed t o be important.

Tony agreed that the scripts, acting, direction, technical execution and other elements were engaging and compelling. Tony added: "Wonderful!"  Several of the films brought to light serious topics that left us both feeling that others...everyone...should view them.

Junior's Cafe is  Awarded the "A" RATING by New York City  10/15/2010

Junior's Cafe is the 2nd Full Service Restaurant in Long Island City to be Awarded the "A" RATING by New York City, and the 1st on Vernon Blvd. 10/15/2010

A long time favorite restaurant with Long Island City insiders, Juniors Cafe has been awared the coveted "A" RATING by New York City.

Every city has one. It is an established local spot.

It is usually the oldest restaurant and bar in town. This is Long Island City's.

This one has been on the same corner of 46th Rd and Vernon Blvd for, what they say is, over 80 years.

Some locals have loved this traditional, charming Italian restaurant for their entire lifetime.

It is the kind of place that you could walk by....but don't. Inside is a mix of interesting people, delicious Italian food, plus great steaks and chops.

Some people eat here every night. That's how good it is.

It's definitely a gathering place where the locals and newcomers meet, mingle, and enjoy fun conversation.

They also pour a generous drink.

Hidden in the back, there is a private party room suitable for all type of events and occasions from Bridal Showers to the Super Bowl. There is a beautiful mural painted on all walls, that depicts the villages and town along the coastline of Italy.

Try Junior's Cafe. It is an experience you will enjoy.  Tell them Arthur and Marion sent you.

Practical Acupuncture Opens Community Treatment Clinic in Long Island City

Lennox Morris, L.Ac., Graduate of Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, offers Community Setting Acupuncture with All Treatments on a Sliding Scale Fees from $30-$55

Lennox Morris, a licensed Acupuncturist, has opened PRACTICAL ACUPUNCTURE,  a new treatment clinic at 44-02 11th Street in Long Island City.

Based on what we saw during our two visits to the Practical Acupuncture clinic, we think Lennox Morris is going to be in great demand, and will have a successful practice in Long Island City.  Aside from his skill as an acupuncturist, and the very reasonable pricing model of" community treatments", Lennox himself is a very soft spoken man with  a sense of peacefulness and self assurance that people will like.

OurLIC has visited with Lennox twice, and had the opportunity to video the stories of three people being treated by him.  Their results as told by their testimonials are convincing and compelling.  The treatments ranged from relief of back pain, to skin rash, to a diet addiction to chocolate.

Citigroup Sued by 6 Women Alleging Gender Bias

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Citigroup Inc was accused in a gender bias lawsuit by six women, who said the bank ran an outdated "boys club" that denied women professionals equality with men in pay, assignments and promotions.

The lawsuit filed in Manhattan federal court on Wednesday is the latest in a history of allegations of gender discrimination in the financial services industry, including a complaint one month ago against Wall Street's most profitable bank, Goldman Sachs Group Inc .

Goldman said the lawsuit was without merit and Citigroup said on Wednesday that 13 top positions were occupied by women, from chief executive officer of Citi Financial North America, to head of North America markets to general counsel of consumer banking.

"These cases haven't gone away. You still see them with some degree of frequency," said Professor Christine Chung of Albany Law School in Albany, New York.

REVIEW:  WAKE Played its Final Weekend at the New York Irish Center on Jackson Avenue!

From Ireland to Newfoundland, from New Bedford to New York, Wake imagines a world where we are a composite of each other's memories and all the memories that predate us, our parents' memories and their parents' memories. Through stories and the act of remembering, three generations of an Irish American family are relived as the children excavate their parents' stories and come to a truer undestanding of the family's history. Down on her luck and uninspired by her own future prospects, Deirdre Sullivan moves into her family home which has been deserted since her father (esteemed writer, Dan Sullivan) died nearly two years ago. Hundreds of miles away, Deirdre's grief-stricken brother, Kevin, has taken to traveling the world over trying to recreate the adventures he imagines his father had as a young man. Kevin lands in the peculiar city of St. John's, Newfoundland, where he vaguel y recollects his family has some history. When he meets a beguiling young librarian, Molly Cartwright, he begins to unlock the truth about his family's connection to the island. Meanwhile, 35 years earlier . . . their father, Dan, is going through a very similar struggle as he tries to understand his own mother and her life before he was born. Shattering his sense of identity, she shares with him secrets from her past so volatile they drive him to write an alternative family history. When a prominent magazine offers to publish Dan's story, he must decide what he values more: his mother's respect, or the respect of the world at large.

The shows on Saturday 11/6 and Sunday 11/7 include dinner and cocktail hour; tickets for those nights are $40.
