Van Bramer Gets Answers and Results for Queens Residents at City Council Blizzard Hearing

On Monday, January 10th Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer attended the first series of New York City Council Hearings on the 2010 Blizzard Response. Sitting face to face with top Bloomberg Administrators, Van Bramer had his chance to get direct answers from those in charge of the 2010 Blizzard Blunder.

Limited to just three minutes per Council Member, Van Bramer made the most out of his question and answer session with the Administrators, taking on Office of Emergency Management (OEM) Commissioner Joseph Bruno and Deputy Mayor for Operations Stephen Goldsmith about the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and if they were engaged and included on the conference calls regarding blizzard response efforts. Council Member Van Bramer was shocked to hear from OEM Commissioner Bruno that while typically NYCHA is included, but for the Blizzard of 2010 they were not looped in, an overlook that may have cost a woman in Ravenswood Houses her life.

“Thousands of NYCHA families and seniors were left in the cold during the Blizzard of 2010 and that is simply unacceptable” said Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer. An unacceptable response that Council Member Van Bramer addressed in the hearing and according to Deputy Mayor Goldsmith – an oversight that would be fixed immediately.
