ANNOUNCEMENT: Meeting to Explore the Formation of a Chamber of Commerce for Long Island City and Hunters Point Scheduled for May 19th.

Should Long Island City have a Chamber of Commerce?

By Arthur Rosenfield.

ANNOUNCEMENT: OurLIC has reserved the Terrace Room space at the Waterfront Crabhouse on May 19, 2011 at 12:00 noon to discuss the merits of organizing and forming a Long Island City Chamber of Commerce.

Chambers of Commerce have a long history in the United States. Their primary role is to support and promote a thriving local business community.  But, they are also involved in all aspects of progress in local government, education, and a community's growth in general.  The Queens Chamber of Commerce, for example, is 100 Years old this year. [ see OurLIC Conversation with Jack Friendman, Queens Chamber of Commerce ]

There are also cost savings and benefits through specially negotiated rates with vendors, and with insurance companies for such necessary business expense items as employee health care and benefits.

People join Chambers of Commerce to promote, learn, and get connected.  They also join to participate in local events, access resources, and contribute to the common good of a community.

Sometimes people just need friendly help in starting and growing a business in a community.

Chambers of Commerce are friendly places.

Long Island City already has a strong LICBDC and a Business Improvement District (BID), soon to be merged and rebranded as a "Partnership".  So what is the reason to consider a Chamber of Commerce at this time.

New Business Acceleration Team from Deputy Mayor Steel's Office helps to get ALOBAR Open ASAP.

Jeff Blath will soon open his doors to ALOBAR on Vernon Blvd.  He is an entrepreneur who has been in the restaurant business his whole life; and, has thought very carefully about the new restaurant that he is opening in Long Island City.  He has been a resident here, and has a good sense of what will work to bring the thousands of new people who have moved into the community to ALOBAR.

ALOBAR on Vernon Blvd looks like a promising new addition to Long Island City.   Jeff has opened his doors to give people a look.  OurLIC will be bringing readers and viewers a regular update.

Tom Fox has a plan...and Bea Murphy has a petition

It is hard to keep a good beach down!

Long Island City Art, Business, and Media Community Unite Behind New LIC ARTS OPEN Set for May 14-22, 2011

Scheduled to span nine days including two weekends, LIC ARTS OPEN seeks to promote the growing performing arts, film, and other venues as well as the artist open studios scheduled for May 14 - 22.

Because of a collabotion between artists, arts entities, gallery owners, performing art locations, media, businesses and the NY City Council, Long Island City has come one step closer to defining itself as the HOT destination hub for innovation in NYC arts and culture of all types.

Already a major center for film and video production because of Kaufman Astoria Studios, Silvercup and other studios, and its growth as a base for hundreds of artists and galleries that migrated to Long Island City from Manhattan, as well as the anchor of MoMA PS1, LIC ARTS OPEN is working hard to establish its first nine day "festival" to attract residents and visitors to experience art, theatre, across all other venues and to focus attention on Long Island City.

Everyone in the Long Island City community that is interested in its prosperity and economic success is encouraged to participate and support this effort aggressively.

Unlocking Your Potential at the Long Island City YMCA!

In its  Mission statement, The YMCA of Greater NY  writes "The YMCA of Greater NY is a community service organization which promotes positive values through programs that build spirit, mind, and body welcoming all people with a focus on youth."

While the YMCA was formed in 1881, since 1891 a triangle with "Body, Mind, and Spirit" making up its three lines, has been the fundamental symbol of a healthy human being for the YMCA organization.  It has  hoped to shape young people in all three areas to acheive healthy youths and healthy adults.  At one time, the YMCA organization  even grew its own educators and physical education trainers who had a laser like focus on the strength of this balanced model for life. A healthy mind and spirit in a healthy body.

Making Extraordinary Pizza in Long Island City ~ Masa Madre style at the Foodcellar Market & Eatery

All Pizza is not created equal. We sometimes take our favorite pizza for granted. Foodcellar's pizza man, Mo, shows us how they do it.

The residents of Long Island City are blessed to have a wide choice of delicious PIZZA.  OurLIC has set out to explore the making and serving of pizza in LIC restaurants and eateries.

Because of our love of pizza, and the CityEntree service, we have been studying pizza for years.

Pizza is an art.  It is a careful blend of dough ingredients and preparation, cheese, sauce, toppings,  ovens, temperature, crust, thickness, and the mix of the ingrdients.   We sometimes take our favorite pizza for granted.
