Sunnyside Queens Blvd Merchants Initiative Started 6/7/2011

OurLIC Conversation with Lilly Gavin, owner of Dazies Restaurant, Queens Blvd, Sunnyside and Community Advocate

Congressman Joseph Crowley and the Sunnyside community came together to celebrate the launch of the Queens Boulevard Merchants Initiative at Molly Blooms on Tuesday. The event drew about 70 people, including residents, merchants, property owners and government officials.

Poised at Queens' gateway to Manhattan, the commercial corridor of Sunnyside, particularly Queens Boulevard, is the first thing many people see upon encountering Sunnyside. About 176,000 cars cross the Queensboro Bridge each day – are they seeing a boulevard we are proud to call our own?

The QBMI's hope is that it can facilitate communication and open up the discussion about how to improve Sunnyside. The group seeks to improve the community and encourage residents to Buy Local, Shop Local, and Hire Local.

This article contains an interview by OurLIC with Lilly Gavin, owner of Dazies Restaurant on Queens Blvd, and an active leader and advocate for Sunnyside and greater Long Island City. Lilly speaks out about the importance of everyone joining together to improve the community for the future.

OurLIC Video Conversation: Paul Finnegan; Executive Director, The New York Irish Center

Finnegan discusses "The Greatest Generation"

The very first thing you need to know about the New York Irish Center is that it is a wonderful place that serves the Irish community in ALL FIVE BOROUGHS.

The very second thing you need to know is that Ireland is a country of "Counties", and the hearts of all Irish folk start with their community in IRELAND.

No one understands, explains, or represents this better than Paul Finnegan.  First, he is a truly honorable and proud Irishman who is Executive Director of an organization that was established to be a center for people who are away from their communities in Ireland. Second, he is an articulate spokeman for the Irish Center and for the Long Island City community in which he has a leadership role.

Mort Zuckerman is "Cautiously Optimistic"

Mort Zuckerman, owner of NY DAILY NEWS and US NEWS & WORLD REPORT, addressed the Queens Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Meeting 5/24/2011

Mort Zuckerman told the business community, gathered at the Queens Chamber of Commerce Annual Breakfast & EXPO, that he has shifted from "cautiously pessimistic" to "cautiously optimistic".   He described the devastating blow of the financial crisis as a "tsunami" that hit the financial world.  He also reminded the group that the Stimulus Funds, injected into the economy by the Obama Administration, will be fully deployed by the end of June.  Since these funds helped to offset the impact of the financial crisis, the impact of the loss of the stimulus money is unpredictable.

Zuckerman was critical of the use of the stimulus funds because they were not applied to the type of programs and projects that would have created 1.5 - 1.7 jobs for every job added or saved.   Zuckerman was referring to the food chain effect, where several new jobs are created to support the work and efforts one job creates by adding new capital.

By detailing several forms of unemployment,  Zuckerman detailed that the financial crisis has lifted the percentage of employable people who are not working to 17%-18%, not the 9.0%+ that is reported.  He noted that New York City has been hurt less by the financial crisis than other parts of the country.

Long Island City resident stirs action with photographs shown to Commanding Officer at 108th Community Council April meeting.

Lt. Mark Wachter, 108th Precinct notified the Community Board #2 office, as a follow up to the DSC Meeting, that an arrest was made concerning the break ins at 46th Road and 5th Street.

The man arrested is someone who lives nearby and is in his mid-50's.  There is still an ongoing investigation and the 108th is continuing their patrols of this location.    During previous hearings, the police have told the community that incidents like these are often attributable to "career criminals".

Of the 49 percent of businesses that are systematically deploying a data eraser method, 75 percent do not delete data securely, leaving most organizations highly susceptible to data breaches, which plague businesses at least once a year according to this same survey.
