Behind the Scenes: Valarie D'Elia comes to Long Island City to Report on Tourism for "Travel with Val"

Tourists Find Long Island City A Great Alternative To Manhattan Madness segment by Valarie D'Elia aired on NY1 September 15th and 19th "Travel with Val".

Long Island City tourism is booming. The community is in the midst of a renaissance with hotels being built, and restaurants being opened.  Long Island City is attracting people from all over the world for the same reason that people are moving here.  It is 3 to 5 minutes across the East River to Manhattan, and a short distance to airports and lots of attractions, dining, and cultural centers in Queens.

When we met Valarie D'Elia at the pre-opening reception of the Z Hotel in July, she asked "What do people do in Long Island City?"  We quickly invited her to return for a tour.

In early September, just after Hurricane Irene passed through, Val crossed the East River, by its new Ferry, with Arthur and Marion Rosenfield. For several hours we introduced Val to the Long Island City that we know.  Because of OurLIC, we have a privileged view and perspective of LIC and were able to show her, first hand, the answer to her question "What do people do in Long Island City."

The Burger Garage Now Offers Beer and Wine

The Burger Garage gets its Beer and Wine License

The Burger Garage restaurant, serving the most delicious high quality burgers, fries, hot dogs, iceberg wedge, chili potatoes now serves carefully select draft beers... and wine.

The restaurant has become a popular spot because it offers a custom blend of 100% Black Angus, USDA Certified beef with no hormones or antibiotics ground daily for us by old school, 3rd generation butcher Pat La Frieda.

With the service of selected Draft Beer and Wines, The Burger Garage is in the position to expand its dinner customer business. Not only is it a casual place with excellent food and good prices, the location is in a convenient transportation hub at Court Square where the 7 subway, the G, and the E intersect.  It is also a short distance to the Queensboro Plaza, and the bridge to Sunnyside's Queens Blvd.   For those in the Hunters Point area, the short walk or drive is worth it.

Don't mistake The Burger Garage for a fast food restaurant. It has a limited menu, and serves burgers that are competitively priced with fast food locations, but the comparison stops there.

Pumpernickel Bagel and Delicatessen on 44th Drive at Court Square

If you have been craving a freshly baked bagel, made the traditional way by hand rolling, blanching, and baking on stone slabs at 500 degrees, Eric Maksumov has opened Pumpernickel Bagel and Delicatessen on 44th Drive in Court Square.

While Pumpernickel is new to LIC, Eric is not new to bagels or delicatessens.  He has operated other location in NYC and NJ.  He, and his sister Anna, have a new commitment to Long Island City and are on premises preparing and serving traditional deli menu items.

Figs Survive Historic Hurricane!

Tony Vaccaro shows us his dry basement after Hurricane Irene, and claims the new title "Always Prepared" explaining that he stayed up all night to keep his drains clear from debris.

OurLIC visited with Tony in his backyard and shared historic figs, growing on his fig tree. Not a single fig had fallen to the ground during Hurricane Irene.
