Traditional Transylvanian / Hungarian Chimney Cakes Come to Long Island City

Anna Kozma learned the techinques of making chimney cakes from her mother and grandmother as a little girl.  Her mother and grandmother still make these delightful pastry cakes in Transylvania.

A chimney cake, otherwise known as kurtoskalacs, is a unique new item on the food landscape that everyone will enjoy and make a regular part of their treat diet  once they discover them and taste the wonderful flavor.

Chimney cakes are a pastry that has its origin in Eastern Europe; Transylvania, Hungary, Romania. We often talk about diversity in Queens. Here is an authentic new taste of that diversity.  You will not want to miss it.

The shape is like a chimney, and the finished pastry is eaten by unrolling it.

The dough is rolled around a wooden cylinder that holds it, dipped in sugar, and then baked.  As the cylinder is turned in a wood burning oven, the sugar carmelizes. Presto! In a few short minutes the deliciously baked, golden brown chimney cake is ready to be removed from the wooden cylinder.

Three generations of baking "chimney cakes" are the magic ingredients in this specially made pastry now available on Jackson Ave at 50th Ave at the Chimney Cake bakery shop.

Anna came to the US 10 years ago. She and her husband Juan have opened the authentic Chimney Cake bakery store on Jackson Ave, selling these traditional Hungarian and Transylvanian pastries.

This is a rare food item. Anna and Juan have begun selling their chimney cakes to caterers, restaurants, and retail stores throughout the region.

From their Chimney Cake website.

LIC High School Class of 1961 Celebrates 50th Reunion

American Bandstand Generation Returns to Long Island City for their 50th High School Reunion.

In the 1950's and early 60's, the thing that brought young people together was not the internet. It was American Bandstand.  American Bandstand, dance, and songs written by high school students in NYC and Philadelphia kept kids glued to television as much as facebook keeps them glued to smart phones.

That is the way it was from 1957 to 1961 when Long Island City High School students who graduated 50 years ago were at LIC HS.

On September 23rd, several hundred members of the Class of 1961 gathered to celebrate their 50th Reunion at the fabulous Astoria World Manor.

FOCUS REPORT: Sunnyside Gets a Brighter Future!

DOT Changes Regulations for Parking in Sunnyside. Pending Changes also in Long Island City in Queensboro Plaza area.

US Congressman Joe Crowley told a group gathered for an announcement that "Communities change."  It was a simple, but profound observation that echoed under the arches of the 7 Subway line where the press had gathered to hear the official announcement that the community was going to change the parking for both commuter spaces, as well as for regulations that previously restricted parking along the Queens Blvd corridor leading to Manhattan.

The objective was equally simple: Make access to the retail shops and restaurants in Sunnyside possible, and easier for residents and visitors.

Sunnyside merchants are getting a boost from an initiative to change the parking along Queens Blvd. The problem of parking in Sunnyside has apparently been identified for a long time, and organizations like the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce and Sunnyside BID have been lobbying for change so that residents and merchants could enjoy the full benefit of the shopping opportunity offered in the community.

Few institutions touch more lives, with such high daily impact, as the Queens Library. It is an ever present part of the fabric of community life.

George Stamatiades, Honoree at the Queens Library Gala, drove this point home when he told the attendees that the Queens Library serves more people than all of the NYC professional sporting organizations combined attendance.

There are lots of "Friends of the Library" organizations. We count OurLIC as a "FAN of the Library". We think George Stamatiades is onto something.
