OURLIC SPECIAL REPORT: NEIGHBORHOOD LIFE in Astoria and Long Island City

The attractive neighborhoods in Greater Long Island City are changing. New trends emerge.

Lifestyle trends  are often subtle. Transformations in a community are slow.  They sneak up on us, and suddenly, something has changed...and things are different. What we say "WILL" happen, is suddenly a reality.

When trends become reality, it changes the way we look at everything that is important to us.   Trends in a community influence where we live and what we do....where we shop and what we eat. They influence travel, entertainment, investments, relationships and just about everything else.  It is not unusual in history for trends to emerge during recessions. People have ways of adapting. Even policy makers, Community Boards, and others manage to spot trends and adapt their thinking and decisions, once their meaning is understood. Even politics change, as new voters move into districts in large numbers. Shifts in population effect everyone and everything.

Since its beginning in 2008, OurLIC has been like a SCOUT...looking under the surface and behind the doors to explore and reveal the hidden virtues of "our" Long Island City community.   We've identified the new things and tied them together with the old to help make sense of change that has been part of the vision of the community for its own future. The camera has been an incredible tool to chronicle the changes. "Everything Important. Everyone Important. Every Day"....has brought the photos and videos from economic development to block parties and kitten adoptions.

Jammin' with Elio Villafranca and Terry Walsh

Grammy Award Winner Villafranca and Terry Walsh of Steinway & Sons

Elio Villafraca is a Grammy Award Winner. He says about the music he plays "It comes from my bones." He is a Steinway Concert Pianist, a small group highly talented people who have the endorsement of Steinway & Sons, Astoria.

Terry Walsh is Concert Technician at Steinway & Sons. Terry travels the world and tunes pianos for some of the most important concert pianist of our time. Moments before you heard Elton John perform on that extra large piano at Albert Hall, Terry was probably there with Elton tuning that Steinway Grand to perfection... and there are stories to tell.  His name is not on the marquis, but what you hear from that Steinway & Sons piano has been tuned by a master, recognized around the world by the finest concert pianist for his gift with tone and the quality of his skill in making Steinway pianos meet the highest demands of famed concert pianists.

Terry says "I make things people can't touch." It is an abstract thought, but when we watched the video together, the meaning was clear. Terry makes things that people just can't touch.

City Council Member Peter Vallone, Chair of Public Safety Committee of the NY City Council says Crime is on the rise all over NYC and NYPD needs community support. Offers Neighborhood Watch Solution.

The National Night Out Against Crime was celebrated by the Long Island City and Astoria communities at Andrews Playground in LIC, and at Astoria Park in Astoria.

Community participation was high. This is a slice of America at its best...with the community coming together to show support and appreciation for the brave men and women of the NYPD and the Community Councils.

OurLIC participated in both community locations and presents video and photography with this article. We met with NYC City Council Member Peter Vallone, Jr., Chair of the Public Safety Committee, for an OurLIC VIDEO CONVERSATION in which we discuss the current status of crime in NYC as well as the recent National crisis of two slaughters by gunmen, and complexities of constitutional issues relating to gun control.  OurLIC VIDEOS are being processed and uploaded. Please check back.

Press Release from NYC Council Member Peter Vallone, Jr.:

On August 7th, Council Member Peter F. Vallone Jr. joined members of the NYPD, State Senator Michael Gianaris, Congressman Joe Crowley and numerous community organizations at the Night Out Against Crime - a national crime prevention event in Astoria Park.

This marks the 29th year for the event, which drew hundreds of Astoria residents and was co-sponsored by the 114th Precinct Community Council and the 114th Civilian Observation Patrol, Inc.

"With the police force dwindling, community involvement is all the more important when it comes to preventing crime,” said Council Member Vallone, the Chair of the Public Safety Committee. “In Astoria, we are lucky enough to have many residents actively willing to do their part."
