The Long Island City / Astoria Chamber of Commerce will meet on Thursday, May 17th at 12:00 pm at the Waterfront Crabhouse, Long Island City. There is valet parking at the restaurant. Please arrive early.

A Special BUSINESS Meeting of the Long Island City / Astoria Chamber of Commerce will be held at the Waterfront Crabhouse at 2 - 3 Borden Ave in Long Island City. It is important for those wishing to participate as members, to attend. This is an important meeting at which Board Members will be ratified and the Final By-Laws will be ratified. Additionally, an election procedure for Officers will begin.
Those who wish to attend and participate should immediately submit at the “Sign In” page at the LICChamber.org
The meeting will start promptly, and follow the special agenda below which is also available at LICChamber.org. By arriving early, you will not miss these important Business Items.
We have an adjusted schedule and tight deadline for the meeting for Business Items because Brent O’Leary must leave by 12:30 pm.
There will be an opportunity for friendship networking at the early conclusion of the meeting.
The meeting is scheduled to start at 12:00 pm.

Mission Statement of the Long Island City / Astoria Chamber of Commerce
The mission of the Long Island City / Astoria Chamber of Commerce is to advance, promote, advocate for, and protect the economic and commercial environment for local business, and to advocate responsive government; quality of life, cultural, education, and medical care development; while preserving the region's unique community characteristics.
To accomplish this mission, the LIC / Astoria Chamber of Commerce shall adhere to these GUIDELINES:
- Encourage business and community prosperity by promoting economic programs designed to strengthen and enhance the financial opportunities for all businesses within the region.
- Promote commerce between and for the Members of the LIC / Astoria Chamber of commerce.
- Effectively act to organize events that support common goals and the improved flow of commerce in the region.
- Serve as an effective non-partisan, non-sectarian voice for business on legislative, business, social, governmental and community issues affecting the region.
- Identify and overcome obstacles that are detrimental to the business climate and community growth.
- Support civic, social and cultural programs designed to increase the functional and aesthetic values of the community.
- Promote life long learning as the continuous building of skills and knowledge throughout the life of an individual.
- Develop and oversee a community leadership program that gives the participants exposure to other leaders in the community, development of leadership skills, opportunities for personal growth and networking.
- Promote Tourism for the region by establishing and supporting the Travel and Tourism Council of Long Island City (TTCLIC).
- Attract companies to establish their location(s) in the region.
- Negotiate rates and cost savings with vendors, and with insurance companies for such necessary business expense items as employee health care and benefits, as well as other common purchases.

The Region served shall consist of the Greater Long Island City Area including Hunters Point, Hunters Point South, Astoria, Dutch Kills and other areas known as Long Island City.

The NEW Hunters Point Civic Association Hears NY State Senator Michael Gianaris at its First Meeting
Residents and business community are defining Long Island City at a historic time in its unprecedented development.
The Hunters Point Civic Association met for the first time on April 23, 2012. The association is being formed by Brent O'Leary. The group met to hear NYS State Senator Michael Gianaris, who discussed his vision for the future of Long Island City and took questions on topics such as the Hunters Point South Development and the MTA.
NY City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer also spoke and praised the establishment of the Civic Association.

Prior to the meeting, O'Leary said "This will be an important meeting to show the Senator how quickly the neighborhood is growing and changing and let him know the most critical issues for the future of the residents of Long Island City."
During Q&A, residents of Long Island City expressed their views about the important neighborhood concerns and quality of life issues.

Feel Like a Kid Again...It's SPRING....and the Lines at Uncle Louie G LIC are Forming for Cones of that Delicious Ice Cream and Cups of Italian Ices.
Long Island City Loves Uncle Louie G
OurLIC recently spent time at the Gantry State Park talking "ice cream" with about 150 young families, enjoying a Saturday event. We were on a mission to distribute some coupons for the Uncle Louie G LIC store owner, Mark Entler.
We expected coupons for ice cream to go fast; and, the idea of giving out coupons for ice cream to people and children in the community was very appealing.
But, the real fun part turned out to be the level of excitement that the Uncle Louie G store was OPEN for the season. EVERYONE we spoke with raved about their favorite ice cream or ices and told us how much they looked forward to going to the store.

Rapidly growing community wants the ear of the Community Board for important issues from Education and Schools to new Heath Care facilities; from bike path issues to management of residential towers and applications for liquor licenses.
Queens Community Board #2 heard a variety of topics at its regular monthly meeting, heard announcements, and approved three outdoor cafe seating locations in Sunnyside.

US Congresswoman Maloney and NYS Assemblywoman Simotas Join to Honor Three Women as part of Women's History Month 2012
Taryn Sacramone, Executive Director of Astoria Performing Arts Center and Honoree, moved the audience quoting Virginia Wolfe's writings "Very little is known about women".
Congress woman Maloney articulated the great progress that has been made with women's rights, but focused on the perception of progress vs the reality. The reality is that there is still some serious myth and not reality in some areas of women's rights.
Assemblywoman Cathy Nolan was presented a CONGRESSIONAL RECORD TRIBUTE. Maloney said that "her acheivements are now an official record in our country's history. It will always be there". "I could tell you about her awards and accomplishments....but the thing I love about Cathy is that she cares about people" said Maloney.
New York State Assemblymember Aravella Simotas and United States Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney hosted “Celebrating the Women of Northwestern Queens”, a Women’s History Month event at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens on Friday, March 23.
Simotas and Maloney honored Assemblymember Catherine Nolan with the “Gloria D’Amico Award for Leadership in Politics”
They awarded civic leader Eartha Washington with the “Community Service Award”
Simotas said that "Eatha is a model of civic engagement, devoting thirty one years of her life to New York City." Eartha Washington's Awards were accepted by Anna Krill, herself an active community leader.
Finally, Maloney and Simotas presented Astoria Performing Arts Center Executive Director Taryn Sacramone, with the “Artistic Achievement Award”.
The event was attended by Northwestern Queens residents, community leaders and elected officials including NY City Council Members Peter Vallone and Jimmy Van Bramer.

Simotas, Maloney Host Women’s History Event Honor community women for achievement in politics, community service, and the arts
ASTORIA, N.Y.—On Friday, New York State Assemblymember Aravella Simotas and United States Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney hosted “Celebrating the Women of Northwestern Queens,” an event commemorating Women’s History Month at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria.
After delivering remarks highlighting the accomplishments of women throughout American history and calling on more women to get involved in public life, the legislators honored the accomplishments of three members of the Northewestern Queens community. New York State Assemblymember Catherine Nolan was presented with the first ever “Gloria D’Amico Award for Leadership in Politics,” named after the late Queens County Clerk who was a force in for decades. Civic leader Eartha Washington, who was represented by SHAREing and CAREing President Anna Kril, received the “Community Service Award” and Astoria Peforming Arts Center (APAC) Executive Director Taryn Sacramone was honored with the “Artistic Achievement Award.”
New York City Councilmembers Peter Vallone, Jr. and Jimmy Van Bramer attended the event, as well as Irene Stathatos representing State Senator Michael Gianaris.
“I am pleased that so many members of our community came out to honor these remarkable women,” Simotas said. “Our honorees are proof that Northwestern Queens is home to impressive and effective women leaders in politics, civic life and the arts.”
“I am delighted to join our remarkable Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas in honoring three amazing Queens women: Assemblywoman Cathy Nolan, civic leader Eartha Washington and Astoria Performing Arts Center Executive Director Taryn Sacramone,” Maloney said. “These are women who have led the way, taken charge and made a difference. They are remarkable, dedicated and determined, and I am thrilled to celebrate their achievements.”

Employers always like to identify resources and talented candidates for jobs and assignments that can result in a competitive edge, or an improvement in the way a business process is accomplished.
First Les Barnes. owner of London Lennie's Restaurant described how he placed someone in his restaurant's high volumn kitchen, not sure about the safety aspects because of the heavy equipment...and then raved about the discovery he made and the results.
Then Rosely Nieves and James Farber, Queens Public Television introduced one of their employees who has helped to change some of the TV Stations technology through creative innovations in technology.

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, visits Queens to recognize Council Member Van Bramer's contributions citywide.
Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer began the Queens event at the HQ office of City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer. After acknowledging Van Bramer's mother during Woman's History Month, Stringer said he had come to the Open House because he wanted to let the community represented by Van Bramer know what an important contribution he was making to New York City...citywide. He refered specifically to his work in the area of cultural affairs and libraries, where Van Bramer chair's the City Council's Committee...and a budget that is always under constant threat of cuts by the administration.

Bishop Mitchell Taylor, ERDA, announces new Mentoring Program...wants commitments from business leaders and community.
On March 27th, Council Member Peter F. Vallone Jr. joined East River Development Alliance President Bishop Mitchell G. Taylor, Astoria Tenant Association President Claudia Coger, Teamsters Local 237President Greg Floyd and local residents to denounce violence and respond to the murder of Tysheen Davis.
Following the shooting death of 23-year-old Davis, a lifelong Astoria Houses resident on March 25th, Tenant Association President Claudia Coger called for a meeting and press conference to speak out against gun violence, which was held in front of ERDA’s headquarters at 4-25 Astoria Boulevard. Ms. Coger recalled how she knew both victim, and suspect, 19-year-old Lacorey Johnson. The men lived in the same building at Astoria Houses, and knew each other, according to published news reports. The motive has not yet been released by police.
ERDA and Ms. Coger immediately contacted Council Member Vallone to coordinate anti-violence efforts. Council Member Vallone also reached out to the Council for Unity to form a partnership with those involved at the Astoria Houses.

Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer told the group that small businesses were important to him and to NYC and that he looked forward to partnering with the LIC / Astoria Chamber of Commerce.

Reception for the first Board of Directors for the Long Island City / Astoria Chamber of Commerce was held at Penthouse808 Rooftop Restaurant in LIC.
Members and guests of the first Board of Directors for the Long Island City / Astoria Chamber of Commerce gathered at Penthouse808 Rooftop Restaurant (sponsor-host) for a reception and networking event on Tuesday night.
 During the reception, Arthur Rosenfield introduced each of the thirty Board Members individually with short, often personal, stories about each, their backgrounds, and their businesses. He highlighted the reason that each is part of the Board by saying that "Each is not only an example of good business and management, committed to the growth of the business community in Long Island City, but also they are people who are committed to the success of the community and our neighborhoods in general." The composition of this Board "cuts across all type of business interests." he said underscoring that there was" great promise because everyone is so dedicated".
Importantly, he called attention to the multicultural mixture of the LIC Chamber Board that has been assembled, noting that the representation of immigrant business owners included Greek, Cuban, Turkish, Indian, Ecuadorian, Irish, Italian, Romanian, Middle Eastern, Asian, and other countries...reflecting the strength and composition of the emerging Western Queens Business community.

Deputy Mayor Steel began his comments to the business and professional community gathered at the LIC Partnership meeting by saying "I thought what I would do is come to friends and give you a bit more detail. People have read a lot about the applied science initiative that Mayor Bloomberg has launched, so today we will go into a bit more detail as to how this has developed, what we think the impact will be, and how it is going to unfold."
Before detailing the Roosevelt Island Applied Sciences initiative, Steel put the project in the context of Mayor Bloombergs strategic plan for New York City.

The Community District Education Council 30 and NYC Department of Education held an Open Meeting to discuss the construction of the new school being built at 1-50 51st Ave, Long Island City. The school will be mixed 6-8th grade and High School 9-12th grade. It is expected to open for the 2013-2014 school year.
Presentations and Q&A were handled by representatives of the NYC Department of Education.

Everything is the same!
A Greenwich Village landmark, the Corner Bistro, located at Jane Street / West 4th / 8th Avenue has been beautifully replicated on Vernon Blvd. in Long Island City.
We first learned about the original Corner Bistro sometime before 2002 when we lived in Manhattan and became aware of the annual awards, recognition, and popularity it had acheived. We started to go there. It wasn't just the food that drew us. The celebrities, "soap stars", travelers from all over the world, mixing with the local gentry, made this spot one of the most interesting places in Manhattan, and a fun place to go. We brought friends to enjoy it...and family.
Year after year we made regular visits to the Corner Bistro. The trip was worth it, even when there was a wait. The burgers, the chili, the chili-fries were delicious. The owners were dedicated, and had something "hot".

Arana Hankin named President of Queens West Development
At a meeting of the Board of Directors for Queens West Development Corporation, Arana Hankin was confirmed as President, replacing Paul Januszewski. Januszewski has joined Rockrose.
Hanken has been Director of Brooklyn's Atlantic Yards for Empire State Development Corporation.
Not long after college graduation, she began working for Governor Paterson when he was deputy minority leader in the state Senate, doing constituent work in Harlem. She earned a master's degree in anthropology/archeology at Stanford from 2004 to 2006, and later returned to New York to help in Paterson's campaign for Lieutenant Governor. Once Paterson took the position, Hankin served as senior policy advisor regarding economic development policy, stem cell policy, and arts policy, among other things. As Assistant Secretary for Cultural and Economic Development, she managed a group of agencies, including Downstate ESDC, Department of Motor Vehicles, and New York State Council on the Arts.

Lions meet the needs of local communities and the world. The 1.35 million members of their volunteer organization in 206 countries and geographic areas are different in many ways, but share a core belief – community is what we make it.
With 46,000 clubs and 1.35 million members worldwide, the Lions Club is the world's largest service club organization.
The Lions Club of Long Island City and Astoria held a special meeting February 28th that marks a new commitment to build the Lions Club as a strong community service organization for Long Island City and Astoria. Ten new enthusiastic members were introduced to the club. Several previously knew the Lions Club because of parents and grandparents who belonged here in America, or in other countries such as Turkey and Colombia.
The Long Island City / Astoria Lions Club is the oldest club in this Lions Club District. It has moved from Astoria to Long Island City.

Astoria's Acclaimed Chef, Rocco Sacramone, prepared special items for 183 people at event promoting 'Eat Heartily'.
On Wednesday, February 29th, Chef/Owner Rocco Sacramone of Astoria's Trattoria L'incontro demonstrated the preparation of delicious, nutritious dishes using recipes that he and the Mount Sinai Queens Clinical Nutrition Manager, Allison Amores, agreed were both sumptuous cuisine and heart-healthy. Ms Amores is a Registered Dietitian (RD). This OurLIC article includes am exclusive VIDEO of Chef Rocco Sacramone demonstrating the preparation of Black Sea Bass in a special Tomato Sauce as well as his comments on healthy ingredients.
The evening was presented by Mount Sinai Queens and United Community Civic Association and generously supported by Central Sushi Bar and Lounge and Rocco Sacramone, chef/owner Trattoria L'incontro.
February was heart-health month. Heart disease is called public enemy #1 and claims more lives than any other cause of death worldwide. Alix Mollin Brightens Quality of Life for Nieghbors Near the Murray Playground
Murray Playgound is in final stage of as redesign and renovation plan that was presented to Community Board #2 by the Parks Department on December 1, 2011
Alix Mollin is a neighbor in Long Island CIty who lives directly across 21st Street from Murray Playground. Since the 1980's she has been planting flowers, often at her own expense, at the corner of the park at 21at Street nearest the C-Town store and the E / M Subway stop.
Murray Playground is in the process of a redesign and reconstruction and it is uncertain what the future of this corner of the Murray Playground will be in the future and how it will be managed.
On December 1, 2011, Community Board #2 heard the plan for the final phase of renovation of the Murray Playground. OurLIC attended this meeting and is making full video coverage of this proposed plan available with this aricle, along with current photos of the full park area.

This series will no doubt be a hit! The talent is extraordinary, and the theme will strike home both because of its location,and also because of the wide appeal it will have to people who have talent and those who just enjoy watching talent.
The plot begins with the hatching of an idea to produce a movie about Marilyn Monroe,an idea which everyone agrees has never "worked" and has never made any money. Suddenly, one of the characters tossed in the idea that "a baseball number" with Joe Demaggio could make the difference.

Tribeca Pediatrics Coming to Long Island City on Vernon Blvd

Tribeca Pediatrics to locate at Vernon Blvd and 47th Road
 Long Island City takes another step in the right direction.
Tribeca Pediatrics, a NYC based Doctors group with nine locations, has signed an agreement to open another office on Vernon Blvd and 47th Road. The location was previously vacant. Building owners Andrew and Rosemary Anzalone have been careful to bring tenants to the community that add critically needed services for residents.

SPECIAL OURLIC REPORT: City Sets Hunters Point South Development Plan at 100% Affordable for Phase One.
Community Meeting Announced for January 12, 2012 at 6:30 pm.
Deputy Mayor Robert Steel presented the NYC Economic Development Strategy at an Executive Breakfast in Jamaica at York College on December 7, 2011.
During the presentation, the Deputy Mayor referred to the Hunters Point South Development project. Because of a prior statement made at another luncheon in November, and another announcement by Joe Conely at the December monthly meeting at the Community Board #2 meeting, OurLIC asked for official statements.
In a statement to OurLIC after the presentation, Deputy Mayor Steel said:
“Hunters Point South will be the largest affordable housing development in New York City in four decades, and we are thrilled that the 950-unit first phase will be 100% affordable. This means that even more low-, moderate- and middle-income New York families will soon be calling the Queens waterfront home. We will be breaking ground on the first housing phase next year.”

Mayor Bloomberg, Cornell President Skorton And Technion President Lavie Announce Historic Partnership to Build a New Applied Sciences Campus on Roosevelt Island
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Cornell University President David J. Skorton, and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology President Peretz Lavie today announced an historic partnership to build a two-million-square-foot applied science and engineering campus on Roosevelt Island in New York City. The selection of the Cornell/Technion consortium – which pairs two of the world's top institutions in the fields of science, engineering, technology and research – marks a major milestone in the City's groundbreaking Applied Sciences NYC initiative, which seeks to increase New York City's capacity for applied sciences and dramatically transform the City's economy. Cornell/Technion's proposal was among the many strong proposals that were submitted to the City from a number of world-class institutions around the globe as part of the City's groundbreaking competitive process. The Cornell/Technion consortium was ultimately selected due to the large scale and vision of their proposal, the long and impressive track-record of both institutions in generating applied science breakthroughs and spinning out new businesses, the financing capacity of the consortium, the focus of the consortium on the collaboration between academia and the private sector, and the overall capacity of the partnership to execute the project. In addition to the Roosevelt Island site, the City will also provide $100 million in City capital to assist with site infrastructure, construction, and related costs. This is the first selection announcement for the Applied Sciences NYC initiative. Productive discussions are ongoing with other respondents – Carnegie Mellon, Columbia and a New York University-led consortium – and the possibility of additional science and engineering partnerships in the City is still open. Mayor Bloomberg made the announcement at Cornell's Weill Cornell Medical College, and was also joined by Deputy Mayor for Economic Development Robert K. Steel, New York City Economic Development President Seth W. Pinsky, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, State Senator José M. Serrano, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, Council Member Jessica Lappin, as well as other civic and business leaders.
"Thanks to this outstanding partnership and groundbreaking proposal from Cornell and the Technion, New York City's goal of becoming the global leader in technological innovation is now within sight," said Mayor Bloomberg. "By adding a new state-of-the-art institution to our landscape, we will educate tomorrow's entrepreneurs and create the jobs of the future. This partnership has so much promise because we share the same goal: to make New York City home to the world's most talented workforce..
"Cornell University and our extraordinary partner, The Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, are deeply gratified to have the opportunity to realize Mayor Bloomberg's vision for New York City: to prepare tomorrow's expanding talent pool of tech leaders and entrepreneurs to work with the city's key industries in growing tomorrow's innovation ecosystem," said Cornell President Skorton. Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan, State Senator Michael Senator Gianaris, City Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer and Community Board 2 Chairman Joe Conley will hold a rally against 21 Group Inc.'s State Liquor Authority Application for Gentleman's Club, Gypsy Rose, located at 42-50 21st Street in Long Island City, Queens. Local elected officials, community leaders and community members will join together to express their concerns of allowing Gypsy Rose to serve liquor.
 The New York State Liquor Authority held a hearing January 4, 2012, regarding an application for an on-premise license for 21 GROUP INC. d/b/a GYPSY ROSE, a Gentlemen's Club at 42-50 21st St, LIC, NY.
Testimony was given by the applicant, and experts for the applicant. Following their presentation, opposition testimony was given by Community Board #2, LICBDC, Assembly Member Cathy Nolan's Office, and by OurLIC.
At the conclusion of the presentations, the SLA Board adjourned the hearing until January 18th at 10:00 AM in order to give all parties time to review new documents presented by the applicant, and to arrange for others to make testimony covering points not covered at the first hearing.

On December 15th, Carlo Bermudez owner of [ fLo rE sta ], the foral design company that has been growing entrepreneurially in Long Island City, opened his second location inside the Foodcellar Market.
Bermudez is a third generation florist who has won the community over by his exceptional designs, and his warm personality. His grandfather was a florist in Colombia.
Bermudez says that his [ fLo rE sta ] are unique because his "flowers are from all over the world." He adds emphasis by saying that "Most of the flowers were in their original country just a few days ago." He sell flowers from countries like Holland, Japan, Israel, etc. "I have the ability to have flowers out of season because my bckground in the flower business gives him that chance." Respectfully, Carlo says "Thank you to the neighborhood for giving him a chance to express myself".

Astoria Park Diving Pool to be Converted to a Performing Arts Outdoor Theatre
Peter F. Vallone Jr. and Department of Parks and Recreation Queens Borough Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski announced plans to convert the long neglected diving pool at Astoria Park into an outdoor performance space, the first of its kind in Astoria.
Vallone said that it has taken four years to make this happen, and complemented the Parks Department in the working relationship and for their efforts.
The executive director of Astoria’s largest and most prolific theater nonprofit organization, Astoria Performing Arts Center's Executive Director Taryn Sacramone, as well as Community Board 1 Chair of the Parks Committee, Richard Khuzami, also commented on the need for such a space in Astoria.
Funding was made available from City Council Member Vallone's discretionary funds.
Taryn Sacramone was especially happy about the new project saying that "Theatre as an art form began in settings like this." Summing it up, she adds "This is an inspired place to have a theatre."
From an artists perspective, Sacramone says "It's delicious. It's a blank canvas. When we build it, they will come. "
The Diving Pool in Astoria Park has not been used for 30 years.

Hat's off....Boxing Writer / Historian / Announcer Bert Sugar Dies at 75
The man who wrote the famous advertising campaign "N-E-S-T-L-E-S. Nestle's makes the very best" died at the age of 75.
Hat's off....Here's to Burt Sugar!
When Bert Sugar started speaking at the Waterfront Crabhouse at a Ring 8 meeting on February 16, 2011, you could hear a pin drop. He was a gifted man with words, had a rich knowledge of boxing, could keep your attention with his stories, and had a brillant talent for advertising. His private "Bert Sugar Premium Cigars" brand cigar and fedora were his trademark. When Bert spun his tale, he crept into your imagination.
Sugar died of cancer March 25, 2012 in Westchest at the age of 75.
