"I've been impressed with LICBDC," says Ira. "We joined to foster new relationships. What better way to increase sales through a network than with referrals from its members?" Ira suggests that LICBDC members make a concerted effort to help fellow members with referrals. "These referrals could be business associates, colleagues, and even friends. Obviously, we are not just going to recommend anyone to our contacts, that is why it is extremely important to network together not only at group functions, but also network outside the group with members on your own time. Get to know these people, so we can all feel comfortable when we make these recommendations. LICBDC is asking each of us to try to generate referrals. This would be win-win for all of us. As the saying goes, it is better to give than receive, so, if we can all give a little, it should come full circle with referrals back to you. Not only helping each individual business but would greatly enhance the value of our organization as well. Please help us get this program underway. Ideas and or suggestions would be appreciated. Many thanks to you all for your continued support!" Contact Ira at 917-748-0315 or irakader@kwgraphicsinc.com.

Lessons for success from NYC manufacturers ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Although the number of manufacturers in NYC has declined over the last few decades, about 7,000 companies still operate, employing 80,000. Crain's NY Business interviewed several (May 11, 2009) and drew some lessons. If you want your company to last you need a lasting reputation for quality, so focus on high-end products, and hire highly skilled staff. Focus on the large, concentrated local market of NYC's affluent consumers and specialty businesses. Use networking to develop relationships with business partners and to find connectors. Emphasize efficiency to eliminate waste, cross-train workers so they can handle different tasks, depending on demand. Be flexible, to either find new customers for their existing products, or sell new products and services to existing customers.

NYC's Post-Downturn Economic Strategy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~The Bloomberg Administration's Five Borough Economic Opportunity Plan is a comprehensive strategy to bring New York City through the current economic downturn as fast as possible. It focuses on creating thousands of jobs for New Yorkers today, and implementing a long-term vision for growing the city's economy. NYC is stepping up job training and placement efforts through the Workforce One Career Centers. More funds will be available to help businesses through expansion of the Capital Loan Access Program and the Business Solutions Job Training grants fund, and the reduction of the Unincorporated Business Tax. New low-cost incubators for start-ups in each borough are planned, as are the launch of new Business Improvement Districts. The City plans to invest $1.1 billion of federal stimulus funds, with $261 million to improve and expand transportation and critical infrastructure. A record $10 billion-plus capital plan will create more than 25,000 construction related jobs. $2 billion will be invested in extending the #7 subway from Times Square to 11th Avenue. The City will use regulations and incentives to create green construction jobs through energy retrofits. http://www.nyc.gov/html/econplan/html/home/home.sht ml

Business News ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Subway trash: where does it go? Despite the fact that there are no recycling bins in the subway, some of it does get recycled. Garbage trains pick up bags from garbage cans on the platforms. They go to borough collection stations, and are then trucked to a mechanized sorting plant in New Jersey. Last year, says Mike Zacchea, assistant chief operations officer for NYC Transit, nearly 50% of the garbage collected - 8,900 tons - was recycled. It would be 75% if papers weren't soiled by food and drink residues. Besides paper, NYCT recycles metal, glass, used motor oil and old subway cars, which are stripped and turned into ocean reefs. If Transit used recycling bins, Zacchea told NY Metro, lots of people would throw recyclables in regular trash anyway, and regular trash wouldn't be sorted. Non-recyclables are shipped to landfills in Virginia and Pennsylvania. Tell NYC Council About Burdensome City Regulations. The City is looking into a review of proposed regulations that may adversely affect small businesses, and to investigate current regulations to eliminate those that are unduly burdensome. Click here and let Council know about any outdated or burdensome regulations that you face as a New York City small business owner. Please be sure to indicate in your e-mail the name and type of your business.
