Jimmy Van Bramer For City Council -- Working for Us                                                                 October 9th, 2009

Dear Friend,

The September primary is now three weeks behind us, but we’re still working hard to get our message out.  I’m proud to announce that I have been endorsed this week by Senator Charles Schumer, Congressman Joe Crowley, Congressman Anthony Weiner, Borough President Helen Marshall, and the Communications Workers of America (CWA). I am thankful to have their support and encouragement going into November!

We still feel great about our victory last month but we are staying focused on the November 3rd General Election where we have a Republican opponent. We are grateful to all those who have backed us through the campaign thus far, but we have not reached the finish line yet.  Please help us get there by signing up to volunteer by emailing jimmyvanbramer@gmail.com or calling (718) 313-0569.

Also a reminder, that next Tuesday, October 13th, you are invited to attend a fundraiser in support of my campaign. We are honored to have New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn as the guest speaker of the evening.  Please join us from 6 p.m.-8 p.m at Dazies Restaurant at 39-41 Queens Blvd. The event will be open to the public and hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be served. Please RSVP by calling (718) 313-0569 or email us at jimmyvanbramer@gmail.com.

Best,
Jimmy

Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer -- District 26                                                         March 12th, 2010
I am honored to be the new Chair of the Committee on Cultural Affairs, Libraries and International Intergroup Relations. Given the interest on the part of many to access funding through the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), and the approaching deadlines for applications for said funding, I wanted to make sure everyone had DCA's specific requirements and deadlines for the Fiscal 2011 funding process.  Please feel free to reach out to me and my staff with any questions or concerns you may have.  You may reach my Chief of Staff, Tim Roberts, and my Director of Public Affairs, Andres Berry, at (718) 383-9566.

DCA was pleased to announce the launch of the online Cultural Development Fund Application and Deadline for Fiscal 2011.  This year’s deadline is Monday, March 29, 2010.  The CDF Application can be accessed and submitted online at www.nyc.gov/culture.

All organizations seeking support through DCA for Fiscal 2011, including those that wish to be eligible for Member Item funding, must submit an online CDF Application by the March 29th deadline to be considered eligible for funding.  Only organizations receiving multi-year support are exempt from this deadline.

Supplemental Materials

The online CDF Application must be accompanied by hard copies of Supplemental Materials in order to be eligible for funding.  These materials are critical to the decision-making process for all applicants, and must be mailed or hand-delivered to DCA’s office.  The deadline for Supplemental Materials is the same as the online submission:  Monday, March 29, 2010.  Organizations are encouraged to submit the required materials as soon as possible and before the final deadline.  Please review the Application Checklist to start preparing your Supplemental Materials.

Application Seminars

This year, DCA is hosting fifteen Application Seminars throughout the five boroughs.  We strongly encourage all applicants to attend one, which will allow you the opportunity to speak directly with DCA staff as well as help you prepare the most competitive Application possible.  Before attending, be sure to review the Guidelines, which are essential to understanding the content required for a complete proposal; review the Instructions, which are essential to navigating the online form as well as to preparing the Supplemental Materials; and bring with you a Blank Application

Accessing the CDF Application

To begin the process of completing the Application, your organization must first enroll.  We urge you to enroll online as soon as possible, so you have as much time as possible to work on the content of the Application.  To enroll, you need to provide your federal EIN and will receive a password, which will then allow you to log in to the online Application Form.  Click here to enroll now.

Cultural Data Project Requirement

As part of DCA’s Fiscal 2011 CDF process, all applicants are required to create a Cultural  Data Project account and submit a DCA CDF Funder Report as part of this year’s supplemental information. I hope your organization has attended one of the many

informational sessions conducted by the Pew Charitable Trusts and has registered with the site and begun work on creating a data profile for Fiscal 2008. Organizations which do not submit a DCA CDF Funder Report with their DCA Application materials will be ineligible for support through DCA in Fiscal 2011. For more information about the Cultural Data Project, visit www.nysculturaldata.org or call 888-697-2371.

Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer -- District 26                                                         April 19th, 2010

Dear neighbors,

We all know that this is a tough time financially for our city and our state. This year's budget is likely to be one of the leanest in recent memory, with many services and institutions on the line for potential cuts. At the same time, it is our responsibility to explore options for increasing revenue to maintain essential services and a strong city.

The City Council plays a role in negotiating the City's final budget, and before we take on that task, my colleagues in the Council's Progressive Caucus and I would like to hear what you have to say. Follow this link to make your voice heard on the choices the city should make in these tough economic times.

Your input can be a valuable part of this process, and we want you to weigh in on the options we have for making cuts and raising revenue. I hope you will join up with interested New Yorkers from around the city to fill out this survey. And once you are done, please forward the link to your friends.

Thanks for your participation, and look out for a report back on what we learn from this survey in a few weeks.

P.S. If you believe, as I do, that funding for the Department of Cultural Affairs, museums, theaters, galleries and the arts is important, I hope that you will add this to the written comments section of the survey.

Jimmy Van Bramer For City Council -- Working for Us                                                                   July 28, 2009
Dear Friend,

It gives me great pleasure to announce yet another important endorsement from our friends in labor.  SEIU Local 1199, the largest union local in the world, announced their support for my campaign for City Council today.

Encompassing a broad array of healthcare workers, SEIU Local 1199 boasts 300,000 members, 200,000 of which are in the New York City area.  Their mission is to improve and expand the quality of patient care, and to protect and improve the lives of their members and their families.

The union's Political Director, Kevin Finnegan, said this about our campaign: "1199 SEIU supports Jimmy Van Bramer because he believes strongly in defending quality health care, living wages, and protecting workers rights. Jimmy has been, and will continue to be, a staunch advocate for working families in the 26th District and all of New York City. We look forward to working with him in the City Council."

The hard working members who make up SEIU Local 1199 play a huge role in the health and well being of many New Yorkers. It is a privilege to be selected as their endorsed candidate for City Council.  By working together, we can build upon the great work already being done by these talented professionals, and fight for better access to health care for everyone.

I appreciate all the help given so far and hope that you will join SEIU 1199 in support of my campaign. If you are able to volunteer a bit of your time (as little as a couple of hours), you can help us out by going door to door, making phone calls or hosting a house party.  Just drop us a line at jimmyvanbramer@gmail.com or call the campaign at (718) 313-0569. Thank you!

All the best,
Jimmy

Jimmy Van Bramer For City Council -- Working for Us
August 4th, 2009

Dear friend,

It may seem hard to believe, but August has arrived and we're quickly sprinting towards the September 15th Democratic Primary.

This week I was endorsed by the Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA) and there are more events coming up with the Citizen's Union debate on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at LaGuardia Community College and a meet and greet hosted by Joe Conley at Riverview Restaurant in Long Island City at 7 p.m. on Thursday evening.  Please visit my website for details.

Most importantly, I need everyone's help spreading the word about why I'm running for City Council. There is no better way to help me win than through face-to-face interactions with your friends and neighbors.  Every night I go door-to-door in our neighborhood and I need you to join me.  We're canvassing Monday through Friday, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; on Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m.  Please contact my Field Director, Jordy Ziegler at 718-313-0569 or jordannazeigler@gmail.com to schedule a time to volunteer.

We are also looking for people to host very informal meet and greets at their home for neighbors who have not had a chance to learn about my campaign.  Signing on to a "Dear Neighbor" letter addressed to your block or building is also important.  Please contact my Field Director, Jordy Ziegler at 718-313-0569 or  jordannazeigler@gmail.com to lend a hand.

We are getting close to the home stretch and this is the time when your active support can make all the difference. Thank you again, and I hope to see you at our campaign office soon!   Best,

Jimmy

Jimmy Van Bramer For City Council -- Working for Us                                                                   August 14th, 2009

Dear Friend,

Can you believe it - there are just 31 days until the Democratic Primary on September 15th!

Things are moving quickly as we enter the final month. We've just been endorsed by Council Member and Comptroller Candidate Melinda Katz, who is the only woman running for citywide office this year. We also picked up two great endorsements this week: NARAL Pro-Choice New York and the American Federation of Musicians/Local 802.

But perhaps the most exciting thing in August is still to come: my 40th birthday on Wednesday, August 19.  Please help me celebrate by being one of 40 volunteers for my 40th!  We'll meet at the campaign office at 45-18 Skillman Avenue at 5:30 p.m. and go door to door the neighborhood. Afterward, at 8:30, we'll have a birthday party with a cake and candles in the office. Contact my Field Director Jordy Zeigler at 718-313-0569 or jordannazeigler@gmail.com to RSVP.

If you can't make it on August 19, please volunteer whatever time you can spare (even a few hours) as soon as possible. I could really use your help to spread our message to voters at their homes, over the phone and through "dear neighbor" letters in the mail. Please contact my Field Director Jordy Zeigler at 718-313-0569 or jordannazeigler@gmail.com for details.

We are coming down to the wire - so this is the time to get involved
!  Thanks again, and I hope that you will help make my 40th birthday one to remember.

All the best,

Jimmy

Jimmy Van Bramer For City Council -- Working for Us                                                                  August 31, 2009

Dear Friends,

We are sprinting toward the campaign finish line!

The Democratic Primary is on Tuesday, September 15th, which leaves just 15 days to make a difference and help elect me to the City Council.  Now is the time when I really need your help.  Our campaign is getting the word out all over the district and we need your help contacting voters: going door-to-door, making phone calls at the campaign office or phonebanking from your home.

Additionally, we are starting to fill shifts to get out the vote on Primary Day.  September 15th is the single most important day of the campaign, and we need your help on this day more than any other.  I know this is a big ask, but please consider taking part or all of the day off from work to volunteer.  Contact our Field Director, Jordy Ziegler, at 718-313-0569 or
jordannazeigler@gmail.com to get set up with any of these critical volunteer opportunities.

I am thrilled to add that we’ve been gaining still more endorsements: from Assemblymember Cathy Nolan, the
Metropolitan Council on Housing, and Citizens Union – an influential good-government group that has named me their preferred candidate in the 26th Council District. Citizens Union was particularly impressed with my community activism and the campaign’s focus on improving the district’s quality of life. We are about to announce another great endorsement from an elected leader shortly – so please stay tuned!

Let me sign off for now by saying that we could not have come this far without your help. Campaigns are a lot of work – as all of our volunteers know – but the finish line is in sight and so is a new day in local politics. Please join me in this progressive, grassroots campaign as we enter the homestretch. Together, we can win this election and bring accountability, transparency and a real commitment to public service to Sunnyside, Woodside, Long Island City, Astoria and Maspeth.

Thank you,
Jimmy

Jimmy Van Bramer For City Council -- Working for Us                                                                September 5, 2009

Dear Friend,

The news just keeps getting better!

If you haven’t already heard, the New York Times just announced its endorsement of me this morning! This is HUGE news!

The Times was especially impressed with my decades of work in the community. Here’s what they had to say:  "District 26, Queens (Sunnyside, Woodside, Long Island City, Maspeth): Two candidates dominate the contest to fill the seat being vacated by Eric Gioia. Deirdre Feerick’s energetic community service is overshadowed by her excessive loyalty to the Queens Democratic machine. James Van Bramer has done good work for the borough’s enviable library system and has the independence and energy the Council needs. We endorse Mr. Van Bramer."

Click here to view the full article.

I can’t overstate how important this endorsement is.  Besides being the paper of record in the United States, the Times’ editorial page has prioritized so many of the issues I have worked on for decades, including campaign finance reform, public education, government accountability and health care.

What a great way to start the Labor Day weekend! And just remember, our office will be open and in full swing throughout the weekend and all the way through the Democratic Primary on September 15th. If you have any extra time on your hands this weekend, feel free to drop by and volunteer – we are located at 45-18 Skillman Avenue in Sunnyside (just two blocks from the #7 train) or give us a call at (718) 313-0569.

Thank you for all of your support,

Jimmy

Jimmy Van Bramer For City Council -- Working for Us                                                                September 14th, 2009

Dear Supporter,

It's been a fantastic summer of campaigning, and it's quickly drawing to a close. I've put together a vast and impressive array of endorsements including The New York Times, Assemblywoman Cathy Nolan, Citizen's Union, Tenants PAC, the New York League of Conservation Voters, SEIU Local 32 BJ and so many more.

The New York Daily News
endorsed me this morning, saying that “Jimmy Van Bramer is tackling the Democratic machine and is a top official of the Queens Borough Public Library, the nation's busiest.”

I'm very excited for Election Day to finally be here, but with less that 24 hours left until the polls open at 6 a.m., I need your help! This is why I am writing to ask you, just one last time, if you could possibly give us a few hours on Tuesday.

We will be staffing every poll in the district all day long and we want to make sure that we have a sizable presence at all of the poll sites. We have a lot of great volunteers signed up so far, but we need more. If you could spare some time, the shifts are as follows:

6AM - 9AM - Poll Opener
9AM - 12PM
12PM - 3PM
3PM - 6PM
6PM - 9PM - Poll Closer

Whatever time you can give, even if it is just an hour handing out flyers at a subway stop or at any of the poll sites, it would be greatly appreciated.
Please let us know as soon as possible by calling the campaign office at (718) 313-0569 or emailing us at jimmyvanbramer@gmail.com.

Thank you so much for all your time and all that you all have done for this campaign - we could not be where we are today without all of you!
