The September primary is now three weeks behind us, but we’re still working hard to get our message out. We still feel great about our victory last month but we are staying focused on the November 3rd General Election where we have a Republican opponent. Department of Cultural Affairs Sets deadlines for the Fiscal 2011 funding Monday, March 29, 2010

I am honored to be the new Chair of the Committee on Cultural Affairs, Libraries and International Intergroup Relations. Given the interest on the part of many to access funding through the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), and the approaching deadlines for applications for said funding, I wanted to make sure everyone had DCA's specific requirements and deadlines for the Fiscal 2011 funding process. Please feel free to reach out to me and my staff with any questions or concerns you may have. DCA was pleased to announce the launch of the online Cultural Development Fund Application and Deadline for Fiscal 2011. This year’s deadline is Monday, March 29, 2010. The CDF Application can be accessed and submitted online at www.nyc.gov/culture.

All organizations seeking support through DCA for Fiscal 2011, including those that wish to be eligible for Member Item funding, must submit an online CDF Application by the March 29th deadline to be considered eligible for funding. Only organizations receiving multi-year support are exempt from this deadline.

Supplemental Materials

The online CDF Application must be accompanied by hard copies of Supplemental Materials in order to be eligible for funding. These materials are critical to the decision-making process for all applicants, and must be mailed or hand-delivered to DCA’s office. The deadline for Supplemental Materials is the same as the online submission: Monday, March 29, 2010. Organizations are encouraged to submit the required materials as soon as possible and before the final deadline. Please review the Application Checklist to start preparing your Supplemental Materials.

Application Seminars

This year, DCA is hosting fifteen Application Seminars throughout the five boroughs. We strongly encourage all applicants to attend one, which will allow you the opportunity to speak directly with DCA staff as well as help you prepare the most competitive Application possible. Before attending, be sure to review the Guidelines, which are essential to understanding the content required for a complete proposal; review the Instructions, which are essential to navigating the online form as well as to preparing the Supplemental Materials; and bring with you a Blank Application.

Accessing the CDF Application

To begin the process of completing the Application, your organization must first enroll. We urge you to enroll online as soon as possible, so you have as much time as possible to work on the content of the Application. To enroll, you need to provide your federal EIN and will receive a password, which will then allow you to log in to the online Application Form. Click here to enroll now.

Cultural Data Project Requirement

As part of DCA’s Fiscal 2011 CDF process, all applicants are required to create a Cultural Data Project account and submit a DCA CDF Funder Report as part of this year’s supplemental information. I hope your organization has attended one of the many

informational sessions conducted by the Pew Charitable Trusts and has registered with the site and begun work on creating a data profile for Fiscal 2008. Organizations which do not submit a DCA CDF Funder Report with their DCA Application materials will be ineligible for support through DCA in Fiscal 2011. Dear neighbors,

We all know that this is a tough time financially for our city and our state. This year's budget is likely to be one of the leanest in recent memory, with many services and institutions on the line for potential cuts. At the same time, it is our responsibility to explore options for increasing revenue to maintain essential services and a strong city.

The City Council plays a role in negotiating the City's final budget, and before we take on that task, my colleagues in the Council's Progressive Caucus and I would like to hear what you have to say. Follow this link to make your voice heard on the choices the city should make in these tough economic times.

Your input can be a valuable part of this process, and we want you to weigh in on the options we have for making cuts and raising revenue. SEIU Local 1199, the largest union local in the world, announced their support for my campaign for City Council today.

It gives me great pleasure to announce yet another important endorsement from our friends in labor. SEIU Local 1199, the largest union local in the world, announced their support for my campaign for City Council today.

Encompassing a broad array of healthcare workers, SEIU Local 1199 boasts 300,000 members, 200,000 of which are in the New York City area. Their mission is to improve and expand the quality of patient care, and to protect and improve the lives of their members and their families.

The union's Political Director, Kevin Finnegan, said this about our campaign: "1199 SEIU supports Jimmy Van Bramer because he believes strongly in defending quality health care, living wages, and protecting workers rights. It may seem hard to believe, but August has arrived and we're quickly sprinting towards the September 15^th Democratic Primary.

This week I was endorsed by the Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA) and there are more events coming up with the Citizen's Union debate on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at LaGuardia Community College and a meet and greet hosted by Joe Conley at Riverview Restaurant in Long Island City at 7 p.m. on Thursday evening. Most importantly, I need everyone's help spreading the word about why I'm running for City Council. There is no better way to help me win than through face-to-face interactions with your friends and neighbors. Every night I go door-to-door in our neighborhood and I need you to join me. 40 Volunteers for Jimmy's 40th!

Can you believe it - there are just 31 days until the Democratic Primary on September 15^th!

Things are moving quickly as we enter the final month. We've just been endorsed by Council Member and Comptroller Candidate Melinda Katz, who is the only woman running for citywide office this year. We also picked up two great endorsements this week: NARAL Pro-Choice New York and the American Federation of Musicians/Local 802.

But perhaps the most exciting thing in August is still to come: my 40^th birthday on Wednesday, August 19. Please help me celebrate by being one of 40 volunteers for my 40^th! We are sprinting toward the campaign finish line!

The Democratic Primary is on Tuesday, September 15^th, which leaves just 15 days to make a difference and help elect me to the City Council. Now is the time when I really need your help. Our campaign is getting the word out all over the district and we need your help contacting voters: going door-to-door, making phone calls at the campaign office or phonebanking from your home.

Additionally, we are starting to fill shifts to get out the vote on Primary Day. September 15th is the single most important day of the campaign, and we need your help on this day more than any other. I know this is a big ask, but please consider taking part or all of the day off from work to volunteer. If you haven’t already heard, the New York Times just announced its endorsement of me this morning! This is HUGE news!

The Times was especially impressed with my decades of work in the community. Here’s what they had to say: "District 26, Queens (Sunnyside, Woodside, Long Island City, Maspeth): Two candidates dominate the contest to fill the seat being vacated by Eric Gioia. Deirdre Feerick’s energetic community service is overshadowed by her excessive loyalty to the Queens Democratic machine. James Van Bramer has done good work for the borough’s enviable library system and has the independence and energy the Council needs. We endorse Mr. Van Bramer."

I can’t overstate how important this endorsement is. Besides being the paper of record in the United States, the Times’ editorial page has prioritized so many of the issues I have worked on for decades, including campaign finance reform, public education, government accountability and health care.

It's been a fantastic summer of campaigning, and it's quickly drawing to a close. I've put together a vast and impressive array of endorsements including The New York Times, Assemblywoman Cathy Nolan, Citizen's Union, Tenants PAC, the New York League of Conservation Voters, SEIU Local 32 BJ and so many more.

The New York Daily News endorsed me this morning, saying that “Jimmy Van Bramer is tackling the Democratic machine and is a top official of the Queens Borough Public Library, the nation's busiest.”

I'm very excited for Election Day to finally be here, but with less that 24 hours left until the polls open at 6 a.m., I need your help! This is why I am writing to ask you, just one last time, if you could possibly give us a few hours on Tuesday.

We will be staffing every poll in the district all day long and we want to make sure that we have a sizable presence at all of the poll sites. We have a lot of great volunteers signed up so far, but we need more. If you could spare some time, the shifts are as follows:

6PM - 9PM - Poll Closer

Council Members-Elect Van Bramer, Dromm Extremely Disappointed By Queens State Senators Who Voted Against Marriage Equality

Dear Supporter:

As you may know, yesterday the New York State Senate failed to pass a bill that would allow same-sex couples the right to marry.

I am saddened that the State Senate has missed this opportunity to finally acknowledge the civil rights of New York's LGBT citizens and guarantee marriage equality for all New Yorkers. I am particularly disappointed in those Queens State Senators, including my own, who voted in opposition to this bill.

Many, including Assemblymember Daniel O’Donnell, Assemblymember Deborah Glick, Senator Tom Duane, and our own Assemblymember Cathy Nolan, fought hard to pass this legislation. They, and those who voted yes, deserve our thanks.

Following the vote yesterday, I and my fellow Council Member-Elect Danny Dromm released this statement below which I'd like to share with you. Rest assured, this fight is not over, and I will continue to be a forceful advocate for equal rights for New Yorkers and residents of the 26th Council District.

Extremely Disappointed By Queens State Senators

Who Voted Against Marriage Equality

Not Representative Of Borough That Just Elected 2 Openly Gay Officials

SUNNYSIDE AND JACKSON HEIGHTS, QUEENS – Council Members-elect Danny Dromm (25^th District) and Jimmy Van Bramer (26^th District), who made history last month by becoming the first openly gay elected officials in the borough of Queens, voiced deep disappointment with the five Queens State Senators who voted against marriage equality this afternoon.

Dromm and Van Bramer also applauded the two Queens Senators who voted for marriage equality – Senate President Malcolm Smith and Senator Toby Stavisky – for their courage and leadership. Dromm and Van Bramer expressed particular disappointment with the two Senators who represent them, Hiram Monserrate (Dromm) and George Onorato (Van Bramer), who voted no.

Council Member-elect Van Bramer said: “Today was an opportunity to celebrate and honor our diversity, to take a stand for human rights and human dignity,” said Council Member-elect Jimmy Van Bramer. “Two members of the Queens delegation – Senators Smith and Stavisky – embraced this vision. But sadly, five other Queens Senators voted to deny a basic civil right to their own constituents. Their views are not representative of a diverse, inclusive borough that just elected two openly gay elected officials for the first time.”

Council Member-elect Dromm said: “I’d like to thank Senators Smith and Stavisky for being on the right side of history today. But Senators Addabbo, Huntley, Monserrate, Onorato and Padavan sent a deeply troubling message today that members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities are second-class citizens. Their votes underscore the need to elect more progressive and open-minded Senators in Queens.”
