| Description: | I was raised in Long Island City and Sunnyside and currently reside in Woodside. I am a graduate of Dominican Academy, the University at Albany and Brooklyn Law School. My father, a former NYPD Detective and Teamster and mother, a nurse, instilled in me the importance of working hard and giving back to my community. I was fortunate to have been raised in the 26th Council District, where I learned to embrace the community's vibrant diversity at a very young age. This diversity taught me that there is more that unites us than there is that divides us. Regardless of their cultural background, the residents of the 26th Council District all believe in strong families, safe neighborhoods, effective government, and a first-class quality of life. My professional career in government began in the Oversight and Investigations Unit at the New York City Council. In that capacity I evaluated the efficiency of city agencies and made them more accountable and responsive to the residents of New York. I then served as Counsel to the Legislative Division of the NYC Council where I helped craft legislation to protect the most vulnerable among us, including domestic violence survivors and children. I also helped secure funding for important programs and services, meeting with key advocates and organizers to ensure their voices were heard at City Hall. Later, I became the Counsel and then Deputy Director of the Administrative Services Division of the NYC Council, where I serve New Yorkers to this day. Throughout my life, I have been involved in many community and charitable activities. Besides volunteering as a coach, teacher and mentor, and fund raising for local charitable organizations, I have dedicated my time to various causes, from community clean-ups to local food and clothing drives. I also serve as a Democratic District Leader and as an active member of several local civic organizations. My civic involvement has enabled me to learn a great deal about the challenges facing the residents of the 26th Council District and has given me the determination to affect positive change. I have announced my candidacy to succeed current Council Member Eric Gioia who is vacating the office to run for Public Advocate. As a lifelong resident of the 26th district, my decision to run for City Council stems from my steadfast commitment to public service and my willingness and ability to fight for the communities of Sunnyside, Woodside, Long Island City, Astoria and Maspeth. |
