| Description: | The Queens Gazette writes: "You will love La Vuelta Bistro Latino, an urban-chic bistro where Latin flavors blend with the finest ingredients to create unique pan-American dishes. Located in Long Island City, in the shadow of the Citicorp tower and with breathtaking views of Manhattan, La Vuelta's interior exudes a cool, comfortable feeling. The dining room features rustic tiles, rough-hewn tables and exposed brick walls that are adorned with works by local artists. In addition, an outdoor garden allows for breezy al fresco dining, ideal for these dog days of summer. Elias Batas, the congenial owner, is always on hand to greet guests and ensure an excellent dining experience. Best of all, La Vuelta’s prices are reasonable and the service is efficient, yet casual. The staff at La Vuelta mixes fabulous cocktails, such as the oh-so-refreshing mojito. This concoction hails from Cuba and infuses fresh mint leaves and lime with white rum, a little soda and lots of ice. This cocktail is summer in a glass. Beers imported from Mexico, such as Dos Equis and Negro Modelo, go very well with lots of La Vuelta’s entrees. There’s an extensive wine list with vintages from Chile, Italy, Argentina and California, as well as a great Happy Hour on Mondays through Thursdays, when these drinks are sold two for the price of one. A DJ spins popular music on Friday nights. La Vuelta’s menu includes lots of fresh fish and seafood as well as juicy steak and pork chops. Some new appetizers have been added, such as plump shrimp, mussels and chorizo sausage in mildly spiced lime broth. I spooned up all the flavorful broth with crispy plantain chips. Another new item is warm calamari salad tossed with black olives and topped with a delicate dressing ($7.50). Coconut breaded shrimp are excellent for sharing and meant to be dipped into the homemade, slightly spicy tomatillo salsa ($6.50). Mini empanadas are delicate, hand made pastries filled with chicken or cheese. La Vuelta puts a new spin on chicken wings, by marinating them in tamarind sauce before grilling and serves them with additional sauce for dipping. Choose among Portobello mushrooms, grilled chicken or sun-dried tomatoes with plenty of melted jack cheese for your own quesadilla filling. How about a refreshing mesclun salad with white beans, cilantro and vinaigrette dressing to cool off? Though I could make a meal of La Vuelta's appetizers, the entrees are too good to pass up. Fresh fish dishes such as grilled snapper resting on a mound of freshly mashed avocado with onion and with port wine reduction combines sweet and savory flavors ($16.). Almond crusted catfish gets a kick from the accompanying mango jalapeno sauce and braised red cabbage ($13.50). A meaty hunk of tuna served with sautéed spinach should be ordered rare to maximize its flavor and freshness. Grilled shrimp with coconut rice and pineapple mojo is a tropical delight for the taste buds. If you prefer meat, La Vuelta’s Argentine skirt steak is cooked to melt-in-your-mouth perfection and served with zesty chimichurri sauce and a heap of mashed potatoes. A 16-ounce New York sirloin is accompanied by mushroom salsa and tostones. Grilled chicken breast seasoned with sazon spices, is served with yellow rice for a light and satisfying meal. Dig into the tender, grilled pork chops with white beans ($14). It’s not easy, but try to save room for dessert and coffee. Dessert choices include flan, rice pudding, turtle cheesecake and chocolate mud cake. La Vuelta has fabulous lunch specials, with smaller portions of their best dishes, for just $8. La Vuelta is open for lunch and dinner from Monday through Friday only. Take out service is available. Visit La Vuelta soon, while the weather is still warm enough to take advantage of their outdoor patio and cooling. The food is fresh and flavorful and the service is friendly and professional. In Spanish, La Vuelta means the trip, or the return, and I know I’ll be returning to La Vuelta for more good food and drinks. Visit their updated Web site for more information and photos. " |
