Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney
http://maloney.house.gov/

First elected to Congress in 1992, Carolyn B. Maloney is recognized as a national leader with extensive accomplishments on financial services, national security, the economy, and women's issues.

Her career has been a series of firsts. Maloney is the first woman to represent New York's 14th Congressional District; the first woman to represent New York City's 7th Councilmanic district (where she was the first woman to give birth while in office); and is currently the first woman to Chair the Joint Economic Committee, a House and Senate panel that examines and addresses the nation's most pressing economic issues.

As a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee (and immediate past chair of its Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit Subcommittee), she has worked to modernize financial services laws and regulations, strengthen consumer protections, and institute more vigilant oversight of the safety and soundness of our nation's banking industry. Also a senior member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Maloney legislation has saved hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars.

As co-founder of the House 9/11 Commission Caucus, Maloney helped author and pass legislation to implement all of the 9/11 Commission's recommendations for improving intelligence gathering.

As a champion for domestic and international women's issues, Maloney helped pass legislation that targets the ‘demand' side of sex trafficking; provides annual mammograms for women on Medicare; the Debbie Smith Act which increases funding for law enforcement to process DNA rape kits, termed ‘the most important anti-rape legislation in history.'

New York City has no stronger advocate in Congress than Maloney. She has doggedly fought for full federal assistance to help the city rebuild from 9/11, most recently helping secure federal aid to fund the health care needs of those made sick by the toxic air at Ground Zero. She has also delivered significant federal funding-- $486 million in the most recent round of funding-- for the Second Avenue Subway and East Side Access transportation projects, both of which run through her district.

The Village Voice characterized her as "a tiger in the House on every dollar due New York." The New York Sun said "her entire career has been marked by a kind of personal courage." And The New York Times said, "New York's Congressional delegation stands out for their moxie, kind of the way New Yorkers themselves often do. Among the brashest members is Representative Carolyn B. Maloney, a Democrat of Manhattan."

Long Island City-TRANS-POSITIONS Along the Queensboro Bridge presents a wide range of contemporary and traditional artwork, including video. Concerned with the notion of spanning, the work explores the place of the artist as well as where art is made. Conjuring a wide range of seeing and knowing, the exhibition features many artists new to exhibiting in the immediate area. In addition to the artwork, the exhibition has prompted new partnerships within the business community.

Judith Tolnick Champa is an Independent Curator with considerable expertise in modern and contemporary art curating, including working in public and private academic settings. She is a member of ArtTable, the leadership organization for professional women in the visual arts and IKT, the international association of contemporary art curators.

Long Island City Artists, Inc. has a 23 year history as a high-visibility organization of professional visual artists working in the Long Island City area, actively creating and promoting public art events and projects for the cultural enrichment of the Queens community. The Centennial anniversary of the Queensboro Bridge is a major event focus this spring for The Queens Council on the Arts, whose mission is to foster the arts in the County.

"The city seen from the Queensboro Bridge is always the city seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of all the mystery and the beauty in the world....'Anything can happen now that we've slid over this bridge,' I thought; 'anything at all...'"

"I want to draw the mind of the viewer in a direction it's not used to. I want to help the viewer discover something he or she wouldn't have discovered without me - a particular accent or relationship that enables us to identify, to realize that it isn't just a man or a woman or an object or a vision, but one particular man, woman, object or vision. I want to produce what remains when the mind has forgotten all the details."

Place:
United States, Long Island City, Queens, The Chocolate Factory
Description:

Conceived, directed and choreographed by Chocolate Factory Artistic Director Brian Rogers, redevelop (death valley) is inspired by his experience of living and working in Long Island City, Queens (the site of an ongoing massive redevelopment project) for many years; and by his fascination with the Gold Rush-era ghost towns of the American west. redevelop (death valley) will juxtapose found footage and field recordings of ghost towns, precisely executed miniature dances, and video captured in real time to construct a series of interweaving visual narratives around ideas of shared, temporary and abandoned living spaces.

Separated from the audience by movable translucent panels made from industrial plastic (which also serve as projection surfaces), barely-seen on-stage movements will be performed, captured in extreme close-up by moving video cameras, then repeated, cut up, and mashed atop one another, leading to a sort of densely layered accumulated history of many people in one space over time. Assembled from field recordings and video filmed during visits to ghost towns in Nevada, Arizona, and California (Death Valley); video interviews with lifelong LIC residents; dances made from mortgage calculators and real estate ads; Ennio Morricone-inspired sounds; text compiled from FDR's fireside chats, statements by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross, and poems by Greg Vargo; and a meal prepared and eaten onstage; redevelop (death valley) will unfold as a gradual unveiling, demolition, and removal of the performance and the space itself.

redevelop (death valley) features concept, direction and choreography by Brian Rogers; video design by Brian Rogers and Madeline Best; scenic design by Brad Kisicki; lighting design by Chloe Z. Brown; sound by Chris Peck with Brian Rogers; costumes by Maggie Dick; stage management by Alexandra Rosenberg; and creation & performance by Brian Rogers, Jennifer Lee Dudek, Sheila Lewandowski, Yoko Myoi, and Mark Sitko. Additional collaborators include Josh Hoglund, Mike Rugnetta, and Greg Vargo.

February 12-28, 2009 Thurs-Sat @ 8PM (add'l performance Mon 2/24 @ 8PM) $15
