Great Greek Concert Dedicated To Rembetika (Greek blues)

A musical tribute to the everlasting songs of legendary songwriter Yiannis Papaioannou

On Friday, November 5, 2011 at 8pm, the cultural organization CYPRECO of America, Inc., presents a very unique concert dedicated to "The Everlasting Songs of Yiannis Papaioannou", to benefit the non-profit and commercial free radio AKTINA FM on New York's public station WNYE 91.5FM/HD1. Featuring a group of leading musicians comprised by Leda Maniatakou, vocals, Christos Papadopoulos, bouzouki/vocals, Megan Gould, violin/baglama and Mathias Kunzli, percussion, under the direction of the renowned composer/guitarist Spiros Exaras. This unique event will feature the screening of an original documentary in English by filmmaker Elena Maroulleti which traces back and highlights the centuries-old history and culture of Khirokitia, one of the most significant pre-historic sites of Cyprus and of the eastern Mediterranean.

The remains of Khirokitia and the archaeological finds from ongoing excavations that stretch back to the mid-1930's and which continue to date have shed a lot of light on the evolution of human society in Cyprus. The featured film also highlights important aspects of the life and traditions of the first inhabitants of Khirokitia. The event will also feature speakers who come from Khirokitia who will share personal stories about the discovery of the settlement and the ongoing excavations at the site.

Organized by CYPRECO of America, Inc., a non-profit Queens-based cultural organization with a vibrant presence spanning over 30 years in New York's cultural scene, this new progam is part of CYPRECO's ongoing commitment of providing unique folk arts programs which promote the rich heritage, history and culture of Cyprus in America.

Continuing its mission of providing for free unique folk arts and cultural programs which promote and highlight different aspects of the rich folk tradition of Cyprus, CYPRECO of America, Inc., invites you to a new program from the folk arts series, "Cyprus Its History and Culture Through The Ages".

The program will take place at the Stathakion Cultural Center, 22-51 29th Street, Astoria, NY 11105 and will feature the screening of the original and rare documentary, "Weaving Ladies of Cyprus". The documentary showcases the most important aspects of the Cypriot art of weaving, from the processing of raw materials to actual weaving with reference to the customs and traditions relating to this unique craft, while it also introduces some of the most significant remaining weaving ladies of Cyprus.  Join us and discover this ancient-long craft of this Meditterranean island.  A great program for the entire family.

2011-02-18 CYPRECO of America, Inc., invites you to the screening of the documentary, CYPRUS IN THE SILK ROUTES.  Very rare in content this original documentary examines and showcases the history of silk making and weaving in Cyprus, a very unique craft that was once thriving on this Mediterranean island.  It is supported with English narration, interviews with traditional crafts people and traders, some from the last generations as they revive scenes from the Cypriot folk life. Perfectly suited for the entire family, this unique event offered with free admission will feature stage readings in English and in Greek of representative Cypriot folk stories and poems which survived over the centuries by word of mouth and which were collected and published for the first time in Engish translation in the books, "Folk Stories My Grandmother Told Me" and "Cypriot Folk Poems 900-1900AD", by the late Lucy Maroulleti, author, translator and storyteller. Unlike children's fables, these folk stories and poems revive unique aspects of the rural life of the Cypriots in older times about war heroes, love, loss of a loved one among other, while most of them reflect true events.
