Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney
http://maloney.house.gov/
First elected to Congress in 1992, Carolyn B. Maloney is recognized as a national leader with extensive accomplishments on financial services, national security, the economy, and women's issues.
Her career has been a series of firsts. Maloney is the first woman to represent New York's 14th Congressional District; the first woman to represent New York City's 7th Councilmanic district (where she was the first woman to give birth while in office); and is currently the first woman to Chair the Joint Economic Committee, a House and Senate panel that examines and addresses the nation's most pressing economic issues.
As a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee (and immediate past chair of its Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit Subcommittee), she has worked to modernize financial services laws and regulations, strengthen consumer protections, and institute more vigilant oversight of the safety and soundness of our nation's banking industry. Also a senior member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Maloney legislation has saved hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars.
As co-founder of the House 9/11 Commission Caucus, Maloney helped author and pass legislation to implement all of the 9/11 Commission's recommendations for improving intelligence gathering.
As a champion for domestic and international women's issues, Maloney helped pass legislation that targets the ‘demand' side of sex trafficking; provides annual mammograms for women on Medicare; the Debbie Smith Act which increases funding for law enforcement to process DNA rape kits, termed ‘the most important anti-rape legislation in history.'
New York City has no stronger advocate in Congress than Maloney. She has doggedly fought for full federal assistance to help the city rebuild from 9/11, most recently helping secure federal aid to fund the health care needs of those made sick by the toxic air at Ground Zero. She has also delivered significant federal funding-- $486 million in the most recent round of funding-- for the Second Avenue Subway and East Side Access transportation projects, both of which run through her district.
The Village Voice characterized her as "a tiger in the House on every dollar due New York." The New York Sun said "her entire career has been marked by a kind of personal courage." And The New York Times said, "New York's Congressional delegation stands out for their moxie, kind of the way New Yorkers themselves often do. Among the brashest members is Representative Carolyn B. Maloney, a Democrat of Manhattan."

Bloomberg Administration to Strengthen Media Industry ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~City officials unveiled eight initiatives to strengthen New York City's media sector. The initiatives - part of a broad plan to diversify New York City's economy - stem from MediaNYC 2020, a program the Bloomberg Administration launched earlier this year that brought together City officials and industry leaders from print, television, and Internet media to develop a strategy to maintain and enhance New York City's position as a global media capital. The initiatives are projected to create roughly 8,000 jobs and support the growth of the City's media sector over the next decade. Strengthening key industries and diversifying the economy is an important part of the City's Five Borough Economic Opportunity Plan to create jobs for New Yorkers today, implement a vision for long-term economic growth, and build affordable, attractive neighborhoods.

http://gothamist.com/2009/02/10/dutch_kills_bar_poised_to_finally_o.php
“The name of the bar is the same as the
ancestral name of the neighborhood where it is located (Dutch Kills), which was
one of several small enclaves that unified in 1870 to become Long Island City.
The word "kills" means "creek" in Dutch, whose settlers arrived
in the area in 1643. Originally named "Canapaukah" (loosely
translated as “bear's watering hole") by the Canarsee indians who were the
first occupants of the land in and around what is now Long Island City, the
"creek" in question is the Newtown Creek, which runs behind the bar
dividing Long Island City from Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Dutch Kills was an
important road hub during the Revolutionary War, and the site of a British Army
garrison from 1776 to 1783."

James G. Van Bramer
District 26 - Council Member - Democrat
A life-long resident of Western Queens, Jimmy Van Bramer was elected to the New York City Council on November 3, 2009.
A community organizer, Jimmy Van Bramer is the son of two active union members. While growing up Jimmy sometimes followed his stepfather, a public-school custodian, to work. As he watched his stepfather polish classroom floors and scrub desks so that children and teachers could have a clean learning space, Jimmy learned the importance of hard work, and the powerful impact that seemingly small efforts can have on the lives of working people. Jimmy has carried those lessons throughout his life.
Jimmy's career has been devoted to making our community stronger and making life better for Queens families like the one he grew up in. From 1999-2009, he served as the Chief External Affairs Officer of the Queens Public Library. As the library's link between community members and government, Jimmy worked to protect and expand important library services, such as after-school programs and English language classes. He also led members of the Queens community on annual trips to Albany and Washington, D.C. to help them make their voices heard by government officials. In addition, Jimmy works to improve our neighborhoods outside of his job, by serving as a member of Community Board 2 and its Land Use Committee.
