Long Island City is about to get a face-lift. The city and federal governments plan to pour more than $75 million into sprucing up this section of Queens, which sits directly across the East River from Midtown Manhattan...The neighborhood is served by eight subway lines, which certainly makes it convenient - The mayor's office and the New York City Economic Development Corporation say they have a plan to tame the snarling traffic and render the neighborhood more pedestrian-friendly...The improvements will include planting more than 500 trees and creating open space, constructing landscaped traffic medians, installing crosswalks at dangerous intersections, increasing street lighting and adding park benches. The city expects to complete this work in 2011, using a combination of $22.5 million in city funding and $56 million in federal funding, including a recent infusion of federal stimulus funds.

P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center is one of the oldest and largest non-profit contemporary art institutions in the United States. Established in 1976 by Alanna Heiss, P.S.1 originated from The Institute for Art and Urban Resources, a not-for-profit organization founded five years prior with the mission of turning abandoned, underutilized buildings in New York City into artist studios and exhibition spaces. P.S.1 became an affiliate of The Museum of Modern Art in 2000.

An exhibition space rather than a collecting institution, P.S.1 devotes its energy and resources to displaying the most experimental art in the world. A catalyst and an advocate for new ideas, discourses, and trends in contemporary art, P.S.1 actively pursues emerging artists, new genres, and adventurous new work by recognized artists in an effort to support innovation in contemporary art. P.S.1 achieves this mission by presenting its program to a broad audience in a unique and welcoming environment in which visitors can discover and explore the work of contemporary artists. P.S.1's diverse program includes artists' retrospectives, site-specific installations, historical surveys, arts from across the United States and the world, and a full schedule of music and performance programming. P.S.1 is open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday through Monday. Admission is a $5 suggested donation; $2 for students and senior citizens; free for MoMA members and MoMA admission ticket holders. The MoMA ticket must be presented at P.S.1 within thirty days of date on ticket and is not valid during Warm Up or other P.S.1 events or benefits. Please visit www.ps1.org for more information.

Bloomberg Administration to Strengthen Media Industry ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~City officials unveiled eight initiatives to strengthen New York City's media sector. The initiatives - part of a broad plan to diversify New York City's economy - stem from MediaNYC 2020, a program the Bloomberg Administration launched earlier this year that brought together City officials and industry leaders from print, television, and Internet media to develop a strategy to maintain and enhance New York City's position as a global media capital. The initiatives are projected to create roughly 8,000 jobs and support the growth of the City's media sector over the next decade. Strengthening key industries and diversifying the economy is an important part of the City's Five Borough Economic Opportunity Plan to create jobs for New Yorkers today, implement a vision for long-term economic growth, and build affordable, attractive neighborhoods.

Next Steps at Queens West: Park Expansion, New Rockrose Building ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Queens West Development Corporation Continues its Revitalization of Queens Waterfront

On July 1st, Queens West Development Corporation (QWDC) and New York State Parks opened a new 6- acre portion of Gantry Plaza State Park, featuring a waterfront promenade along the East River, a large open lawn, an athletic field, and a reconstructed cove and wetlands.

The park is an integral component of the planned 40-acre project to revitalize the LIC waterfront undertaken by QWDC that includes over 4,000 residential units, retail space, two public schools, a public library, and 13 acres of waterfront park land. The new section more than doubles the size of the 11-year-old Gantry Plaza State Park and features spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline.

The Queens West project site extends from 50th Avenue to Anable Basin, west of 5th Street. QWDC is constructing roads, utilities, and parks, as well as overseeing construction of the area's schools and library. Private developers, AvalonBay and Rockrose, are constructing housing.

Next steps for Queens West include:

  • Within the new park area, construction will soon begin on an 8,000-square-foot children's playground. Construction will be completed by next spring.
  • A new construction contract has been awarded for the next 3-acre section of waterfront park, extending the park area to Anable Basin. This work will also include construction of new streets and utilities. Construction of this next phase is expected to take approximately 24 months.
  • Construction of the next Rockrose residential building will break ground in 2010.
  • Construction of a new 660-seat public school (Pre- K through grade 8) will break ground in 2010.

Reviewed in Gothamist.com.
http://gothamist.com/2009/02/10/dutch_kills_bar_poised_to_finally_o.php

“The name of the bar is the same as the ancestral name of the neighborhood where it is located (Dutch Kills), which was one of several small enclaves that unified in 1870 to become Long Island City. The word "kills" means "creek" in Dutch, whose settlers arrived in the area in 1643. Originally named "Canapaukah" (loosely translated as “bear's watering hole") by the Canarsee indians who were the first occupants of the land in and around what is now Long Island City, the "creek" in question is the Newtown Creek, which runs behind the bar dividing Long Island City from Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Dutch Kills was an important road hub during the Revolutionary War, and the site of a British Army garrison from 1776 to 1783."
